Platzl Stay at a Glance
I stayed at Platzl in mid-January, early March, and late May 2026, using a Classic Double, Classic Twin rooms, a Deluxe Double, a Single Room, and one of the newer suites. Its location between Marienplatz and Hofbräuhaus is the hotel’s strongest selling point. The rooms and public areas were generally clean, the beds were comfortable, and the breakfast offered a wide selection. I paid €898 in advance by credit card for two nights in a Deluxe Double. Breakfast cost €27 per person when it was not included in the booking, and the underground garage cost €30 for 24 hours. The main weaknesses were large differences between rooms in the same category, inconsistent soundproofing, and heating or air-conditioning faults in certain rooms. Rooms facing the street can be noisy late at night, while courtyard-facing rooms were considerably quieter. I would stay again, but I would book a Deluxe room facing the courtyard and ask the hotel to confirm the room size and location before arrival.
Platzl Prices and Payment
Room Rate and Additional Costs
The Deluxe Double cost €898 for two nights in late May, which came to exactly €449 per night. Prices rise sharply when major events are taking place in Munich. Standard rooms can also cost more than €300 per night, which is expensive when judged only by room size.
The location adds real value for visitors planning to spend most of their time in Munich’s old town. Marienplatz, Hofbräuhaus, the Residenz, and the main shopping streets are all within walking distance, so there is little need to spend money on local transport.
Breakfast was €27 per person when booked separately. The hotel’s underground car park cost €30 for each 24-hour period.
Advance and On-Site Payments
I booked online and paid for the room in advance by credit card. At check-in, the receptionist checked the booking name and confirmation before issuing the room key. Breakfast, parking, and bar purchases were added to the final bill and paid with the same card at check-out. I did not use cash.
On one bill, a parking charge was added even though I had not parked a car at the hotel that day. It was removed after I explained the situation. Checking every item on the bill before paying is worthwhile.
Platzl Check-in and Check-out
Early Arrival
On one visit, I arrived at about 11 a.m. and the room was already available. I received the key well before the official check-in time without paying an early check-in fee. Being able to rest immediately after a long journey made a substantial difference.
On a Sunday arrival at about 11:15 a.m., the room was not yet ready. That was reasonable at that hour, but the arrival service was disappointing. No one initially helped with the luggage, and there was no suggestion to wait in the lobby or use the café.
Room Allocation
During a family trip, I reserved two Classic Twin rooms. I only learned at check-in that the hotel had one twin room per floor, so the rooms were assigned on different floors. Had I known earlier, I would have selected different room types on the same floor.
On another arrival, I was accidentally given the key to a suite assigned to somebody else. The mistake was corrected quickly, but I now confirm the room number and category before leaving reception.
Departure and Luggage Storage
A normal check-out was quick. I returned the room cards, checked the additional charges, and completed payment without a long wait. The hotel stored my luggage after check-out at no additional cost, and collecting it with the claim ticket was easy.
Service quality did vary between staff members. On one departure, I had to explain an incorrect parking charge more than once before the bill was corrected.
Platzl Room Types
Classic Double and Classic Twin
The Classic Double had a typical old-town hotel room size. Once the bed, small desk, and chair were in place, there was limited space to open two large suitcases. The more serious issue was the difference between rooms in the same category.
Of two Classic Twin rooms booked at the same price, one had enough floor space for several suitcases. The other barely had room for one open case. It had to be stored upright beside the minibar, and two people frequently got in each other’s way.
Some Classic rooms also showed visible wear. There were scuff marks on the walls, and certain doors and pieces of furniture were worn. One television was too large for its position and had been mounted at an angle. A bedside table had a sticky residue on it. The rooms were generally clean, but size and condition were not consistent within the category.
Deluxe Double
The Deluxe Double provided a noticeable increase in space. It had a sitting area with a sofa, and there was still enough room to move around after opening the luggage. The bathroom was large enough for two people to get ready at the same time.
The bed was firm rather than soft and supported the back well. The bedding was clean, smooth, and comfortable. For a stay of several nights, the Deluxe Double is the better option. A courtyard-facing room is strongly recommended because it is much quieter.
Corner Room and Single Room
The corner room was comfortable overall, but its bathroom was cramped. The inward-opening door occupied too much space and made it difficult to move between the toilet and basin. A sliding door would make the room far easier to use.
The fourth-floor Single Room was compact but well planned. It included a bed, desk, chair, minibar, safe, and a window that could be opened. Blackout curtains were also provided. The bathroom was unexpectedly large and bright for a single room. Rooms looking toward Hofbräuhaus had a better view but more street noise.
New Suite
The new suite was spacious and modern, with separate sleeping and sitting areas. It was a good option for a longer stay or for guests spending more time in the room.
Storage for clothes was limited for a suite of that size, and the bathroom had only one basin. Some finishes were incomplete. A brass plate on the towel warmer and a wooden section below the television were not properly secured. The suite is a good choice for space, although the Deluxe room was sometimes more practical.
Platzl Beds and Cleanliness
Mattress, Bedding, and Pillows
Most of the beds were firm and comfortable. The mattresses did not sink excessively and felt supportive after a full day of walking. Guests who prefer a very soft mattress may find them too hard. One bed frame creaked whenever either person moved.
The standard pillows were low and soft. Higher and orthopedic pillows could be requested from reception. Sheets, pillowcases, and duvet covers were consistently clean. The towels were thick and absorbed water well.
Bathrobes and slippers were available in several rooms and were convenient when visiting the sauna. During a booking for three guests, the paid extra bed was not supplied with sheets, a pillow, or an additional towel. Despite repeated calls, the items did not arrive that night. Families should check the bedding and towel count as soon as they enter the room.
Housekeeping and Odours
Housekeeping was generally reliable. Bedrooms, bathrooms, and floors were cleaned daily. Towels, water, and rubbish bins were refreshed regularly. When I asked housekeeping staff directly for extra towels or water, they normally supplied them immediately.
One bathroom had a strong sewer smell coming from the shower drain on two of the three days. The issue was reported but not repaired during the stay. The sticky bedside table and scuffed walls in other rooms also indicated that some rooms needed closer maintenance checks.
Platzl Bathrooms and Amenities
Water Pressure and Hot Water
The shower pressure was excellent. Hot water arrived quickly and remained stable even when several people showered one after another. The Deluxe and Single Room bathrooms were bright and spacious. In the corner room, the main problem was the bathroom door rather than the shower itself.
Water usually drained quickly, and little escaped onto the bathroom floor. In the room with the sewer smell, the odour became stronger after the shower had been used. Requesting another room immediately is advisable when a bathroom smells on arrival.
Basin and Towels
The basin in a standard bathroom was large enough for one person. The Deluxe bathroom had adequate space around the sink for toiletries and cosmetics. The corner bathroom offered much less space. The new suite also had only one basin, which was inconvenient when two people were preparing at the same time.
Hand towels and bath towels were normally supplied in sufficient numbers and were in good condition. The exception was the missing set for the third guest.
Minibar and In-Room Amenities
The rooms included a coffee machine, capsules, kettle, tea, safe, and minibar. On certain bookings, the first minibar selection was complimentary. Bottled water was replenished daily, and additional bottles were available on request.
Bathrobes, slippers, a hairdryer, and basic toiletries were normally provided. One room did not have a hairdryer, so I had to request one from reception. The umbrella supplied in the room was very useful on rainy days.
Wi-Fi, Desk, and Television
The desk was large enough for a laptop and short periods of work. The Single and Deluxe rooms had a suitable chair and useful task lighting.
Wi-Fi was not consistently reliable. During one stay, the speed was approximately 4 Mbps and the connection dropped regularly. Asking whether a better or private network was available did not produce a useful solution. Business travellers who need video calls or large file transfers should have a mobile backup connection.
The television offered only a limited number of English-language channels. Streaming services such as Netflix were unavailable in several rooms.
Platzl Heating, Air Conditioning, and Windows
Winter Heating
A room used in January felt cold on arrival. Increasing the thermostat did not warm it quickly, and the controls were not easy to understand. In another room, the heating did not work properly and a room change was necessary. The replacement room maintained a stable temperature.
Air Conditioning in Late Spring
In late May, the air conditioning in one room did not work during a four-night stay. The problem was reported, but nobody inspected or repaired it. Opening the window lowered the temperature but allowed street noise into the room.
During warm weather, the air conditioning should be tested immediately after check-in. Requesting a different room at once is more reliable than waiting for a repair.
Windows and Blackout Curtains
The windows could be opened for fresh air. Courtyard-facing rooms remained fairly quiet with the window open. In street-facing rooms, closing the window reduced the noise considerably. The blackout curtains blocked the morning light effectively.
Platzl Soundproofing and Sleep
Street Noise
Rooms facing Hofbräuhaus have an interesting view but can be noisy at night. On some weekdays, the street became quieter after about 9 p.m. On weekends, people leaving the surrounding beer halls could be heard talking, shouting, and singing until around 1 a.m. or 2:30 a.m.
Closing the window reduced the noise substantially. When the air conditioning was not working, however, the choice was between a warm room and an open window with street noise.
Neighbouring Rooms and Corridors
Some rooms had thin walls and windows. In rooms with a connecting door, conversations and movement in the neighbouring room were audible. Doors closing in the corridor could also be heard late in the evening.
Guests who value quiet should request a courtyard-facing room without a connecting door.
Bar and Fitness Noise
During a DJ event in the hotel bar, music could be heard in the room until about 11 p.m. It was enjoyable for guests using the bar but inconvenient for anyone planning an early night.
A room directly below the fitness area received repeated thumping noises in the morning. When requesting a high floor, it is worth confirming that the room is not immediately below the gym.
Platzl Breakfast and Facilities
Breakfast Price and Menu
Breakfast cost €27 per person when it was not part of the room rate. It is not inexpensive, but the selection is extensive. The buffet included bread, pretzels, croissants, muesli, cheese, ham, smoked salmon, eggs, bacon, sausages, fruit, yogurt, and hot dishes.
There was also an omelette station, a fruit and vegetable juicer, honeycomb, nut butter, and gluten-free bread on request. Guests who like a substantial breakfast will get good value from the buffet.
The main weakness was the limited vegetable selection. There was no salad, and none was prepared when requested. Between 8:30 and 9:30 a.m., most tables were occupied and the room became busy. Breakfast before 8 a.m. or after 9:30 a.m. was more relaxed.
Coffee and Breakfast Staff
Coffee and tea were brought to the table by the staff, so there was no need to queue at a machine. Cappuccino was good, while basic coffee was average. The breakfast staff cleared used plates quickly and regularly offered additional drinks.
Sauna and Fitness Room
The fifth-floor sauna is one of the best facilities at Platzl. It was clean and well maintained, with a view across the roofs of Munich’s old town. Its generous opening hours made it possible to visit after a full day of sightseeing.
The fitness room is small but contains the essential cardio and weight equipment. It became crowded at popular times, and individual machines were sometimes unavailable. It is adequate for a short workout but not a full gym experience.
Lobby Café and Bar
The lobby café served coffee, cakes, toast, and panini. It was a comfortable place to sit after sightseeing. Cocktails and wine were available in the evening.
Wine prices should be confirmed before ordering. Two glasses that appeared to cost €8 each were charged at a total of €32. The relationship between the listed price, serving size, and final charge had not been clearly explained. The response after I raised the issue was also disappointing.
Platzl Staff Service
Front Desk
Most front desk employees were welcoming and helpful. An early check-in was provided without an additional fee. When a cancelled flight disrupted travel plans, the team helped extend the stay. Questions about transport and sights were answered clearly in English.
Service was not equally strong every time. On one arrival, assistance with heavy luggage was not offered. Another employee gave incorrect information about whether breakfast was included. A question about the slow internet connection was dismissed rather than investigated. When one employee does not address a problem, asking another member of the team is worthwhile.
Breakfast and Bar Staff
The breakfast team worked quickly and remained friendly. Coffee and tea were delivered to the table, and questions about the buffet were answered patiently. Bar staff were usually knowledgeable about drinks and nearby restaurants. The exception was the handling of the unclear wine charge, where a more customer-focused response was needed.
Housekeeping
Housekeeping kept the rooms clean and responded quickly when approached directly for water or towels. Communication between reception and housekeeping was less reliable for special requests, particularly the missing bedding and towels for a third guest.
Platzl Parking
Underground Garage
The underground garage cost €30 for 24 hours. A lift connected the garage directly with reception and the guest floors, making luggage transfer easy. A complimentary electric-car charging space was available during one stay.
The entrance and parking bays are extremely narrow. Even a medium-sized car must be driven slowly, and a large SUV requires repeated manoeuvring. The entrance is located among the narrow old-town streets and is not easy to identify on a first visit.
When the hotel garage was full, another paid garage was available about a three-minute walk away.
Public Transport Instead of Driving
Driving in Munich’s old town involves large numbers of pedestrians and cyclists, one-way streets, and restricted-access areas. Once the car was parked, there was almost no reason to use it again. Unless day trips outside Munich are planned, travelling from the airport by S-Bahn and using walking or public transport in the city is the better option.
Platzl Advantages and Disadvantages
Advantages
The location is the main advantage. Marienplatz, Hofbräuhaus, the Residenz, Viktualienmarkt, and the main shopping streets are all within walking distance. Most rooms were clean, the beds were comfortable, and courtyard-facing Deluxe rooms were quiet. Breakfast and the sauna were also strong points. Early check-in and luggage storage were handled flexibly on most visits.
Disadvantages
Rooms in the same category can differ substantially in size and condition. Street-facing rooms may be noisy at night, and rooms with connecting doors have weak sound insulation. Heating and air conditioning were not dependable in every room. Wi-Fi was sometimes too slow for business use. The underground garage is difficult for larger vehicles.
Overall Satisfaction and Returning
Judged only by the room, Platzl is expensive. When rates exceed €400 per night, a normal Classic room may not offer the space or finish expected at that price. For travellers focused on the old town, however, the location is exceptionally convenient.
I would stay again, but only with a confirmed Deluxe room facing the courtyard. I would also ask for written confirmation of the room size, breakfast inclusion, and room location.
Platzl Location and Getting Around
Walking From Marienplatz Station
Platzl is approximately a four-minute walk from the Marienplatz S-Bahn and U-Bahn station. From the New Town Hall, walk east through the old-town streets toward Alter Hof. Once signs for Hofbräuhaus appear, the hotel is only a few steps away.
The S1 and S8 lines travel directly from Munich Airport to Marienplatz without a transfer. This is usually easier than taking a taxi through the narrow streets when travelling with luggage.
Nearby Attractions
Hofbräuhaus is roughly a one-minute walk from the hotel. Marienplatz and the New Town Hall take about four minutes on foot. The Munich Residenz and Max-Joseph-Platz are approximately five to eight minutes away.
Viktualienmarkt can be reached in about eight minutes by walking toward St. Peter’s Church. The shops and cafés of Maximilianstraße are also within easy walking distance. Munich Central Station is about 20 minutes away on foot, although taking the S-Bahn from Marienplatz is more convenient.
