Mandarin Oriental Review Summary

I stayed at Mandarin Oriental between late March and early June 2026, using several room categories during that period. The hotel sits between Marienplatz and Maximilianstraße, making it an excellent base for exploring central Munich on foot. Most rooms were spacious, spotless, quiet and comfortable, while the heated bathroom floors and attentive staff added to the luxury experience. The stay was not flawless. Some in-room technology failed, minibar replenishment was inconsistent, and service at breakfast and reception occasionally slowed down. A Premier Deluxe Room cost about €1,000 per night, while breakfast cost €55 per person. Despite the high rates and several service inconsistencies, I would return, preferably in a Deluxe Room or Mandarin Room.

Mandarin Oriental Stay Dates and Room Prices

Spring 2026 stays

My stays took place between late March and early June 2026. A Premier Deluxe Room cost approximately €1,000 per night. Breakfast, when purchased separately, was €55 per person. Some rates included breakfast, internet, daily water and the complimentary minibar. At this price level, checking the exact inclusions before booking is important. A package that includes breakfast and the minibar offers better value than paying for everything separately.

Superior Room and Deluxe Room

The Superior Room had enough space for two people and included the necessary desk, storage and bathroom facilities. The Deluxe Room was noticeably larger. We could leave full-size suitcases open without blocking the walking area, and the extra space made longer stays more comfortable. The complimentary minibar included Bavarian beer, juice and water. When choosing only one room category, I recommend the Deluxe Room. The higher rate is easier to justify because the difference in space is substantial.

Mandarin Room and higher categories

The Mandarin Room had an impressive ceiling height of about 18 feet, or roughly 5.5 metres. The high ceiling and generous floor area made the room feel exceptionally open. Its bathroom included heated flooring and a shower that quickly delivered water at a preset temperature of 38°C. Suite 500 was also spacious and suitable for a family stay. Some lower room categories felt smaller and showed wear on furniture and finishes. I recommend checking the published room size and recent room photographs before booking.

Mandarin Oriental Check-in and Check-out

Arrival and room assignment

The door staff took care of the luggage immediately on arrival. Check-in was generally professional, warm and uncomplicated. The reservation and identification checks were handled efficiently, followed by an explanation of the room controls and minibar. During one stay, the room was not ready at the expected check-in time. The hotel addressed the inconvenience by upgrading us to a larger room. At a busy period around 5 p.m., I also waited several minutes at the concierge desk without being acknowledged.

Departure and luggage storage

Check-out was usually quick, and luggage storage was handled without difficulty. Before a late flight, the hotel allowed us to use its facilities to change and freshen up after leaving the room. Additional charges should be checked carefully before departure. A private car service was expected to cost €155 each way, or about €310 for the return journey, but a booking error resulted in a credit card charge of more than €2,100. For hotel transport, I recommend requesting written confirmation of the journey, waiting time and total price.

Mandarin Oriental Payment Methods

Card and cash payments

Room charges and hotel expenses could be paid by credit card. Restaurants and lounges also accepted cash. I did not use mobile payment, so I could not confirm whether it was supported. One cash transaction was disappointing. A lounge bill came to a little over €8, and I placed a €10 note in the bill folder. The employee returned only the receipt and kept the change without asking whether I wanted to leave a tip. When paying in cash, I recommend checking the receipt and change immediately.

Reviewing the final bill

Standard card transactions were processed quickly. Larger items such as transport, valet parking, breakfast and restaurant charges require closer attention. An incorrect waiting period on a car booking can create a very large difference in the final amount.

Mandarin Oriental Rooms and Sleep Quality

Bed, mattress and pillows

The mattresses were on the firm side. Guests who prefer strong support may find them excellent, but one mattress was too hard for me. The staff added soft mattress toppers when requested, making the bed much more comfortable. Pillows in different heights and firmness levels were also available. In one room, the original pillows were too flat and offered little support. I recommend requesting replacements when the standard pillows do not suit your sleeping position.

Desk, power outlets and lighting

The desk had enough room for a laptop and basic work equipment. Several charging points were positioned around the bed, and the lighting could be adjusted for working or resting. Some technology was unreliable. The charging pads embedded in the wooden bedside units did not work, the magnifying mirror required charging, and the automatic toilet system occasionally failed. The in-room tablet also provided limited information about pillows, sightseeing, nearby restaurants and shopping.

Air conditioning and internet

Temperature controls worked properly in most rooms. During one stay, however, the air conditioning did not operate correctly and the internet connection was unstable. The team responded after the issue was reported, but these systems should be checked before a room is released at this price level. I recommend testing both the air conditioning and Wi-Fi shortly after arrival.

Mandarin Oriental Bathroom and Amenities

Shower, water pressure and bathtub

Bathrooms included both rainfall and handheld showers. Water pressure remained steady, and hot water arrived without a long wait. In the Mandarin Room, the shower quickly reached the preset temperature of 38°C. Heated bathroom flooring was particularly pleasant in the morning and late at night. Bathtubs were generously sized, although there was no suitable body wash next to the bath for making bubbles.

Toiletries and towels

The sink, mirrors and towels were clean and well maintained. I did not encounter limescale or unpleasant bathroom odours. The wall-mounted dispensers for shampoo, lotion and soap felt basic for a luxury suite. The automatic toilet features were also unreliable in one room.

Minibar and additional room items

The complimentary minibar contained Bavarian beer, juices, water and snacks. Only Earl Grey tea was initially supplied, so other tea varieties had to be requested. A chocolate bar was not replaced after it was eaten, even though other snacks were restocked. On another occasion, the minibar was missed entirely. Depending on the room, useful items included a yoga mat, hair straightener, umbrella and a large wardrobe.

Mandarin Oriental Cleanliness and Housekeeping

Daily room cleaning

Cleanliness was one of the hotel’s strongest qualities. Bedding, bathroom surfaces, floors and furniture were consistently well maintained. Rooms smelled fresh and were serviced carefully. Small gestures included leaving a bookmark in an open book and providing a wrap for loose charging cables. Family stays could also include children’s gifts, while anniversary visits sometimes came with cakes, chocolates or other treats.

Inconsistent restocking

The cleaning itself was excellent, but the restocking of tea, snacks, minibar items and toiletries was not always complete. Evening turndown was provided regularly, although it did not always include the small surprise offered at some other hotels in this category. A few pieces of furniture also showed noticeable signs of use.

Mandarin Oriental Soundproofing and Atmosphere

Construction and nighttime noise

A major construction site was located directly opposite the hotel. Well-insulated rooms remained surprisingly restful despite the work. Noise levels varied considerably by room direction, however. Some rooms picked up sound from the street, a nearby beer hall or the rooftop bar at night. Guests who value silence should request a high-floor room facing away from the construction site, beer hall and rooftop.

Lobby and shared spaces

The hotel is relatively small and feels more personal than a large city property. Soft lighting, artwork and elegant furniture create a refined setting. The lobby can become hectic when arriving guests and restaurant visitors gather at the same time. Hallways remained quiet, and elevator waits were generally brief.

Mandarin Oriental Breakfast and Dining

€55 breakfast

Breakfast cost €55 per person. The selection included bread, croissants, eggs, cheese, ham, fruit, yoghurt and hot dishes. Coffee was full-bodied and properly prepared. I especially recommend the Weisswurst with sweet mustard. It arrived with a short note explaining how to eat this Munich speciality. Combined with a pretzel, regional cheese and sausages, it makes a satisfying Bavarian breakfast.

Vegan and Asian choices

Vegan pancakes and avocado toast were enjoyable, although the vegan selection across breakfast, lunch and dinner was limited. The fried noodles were the strongest Asian breakfast item. The rice porridge was plain and would have benefited from shredded chicken, duck or meatballs. Fresh berries and walnuts were available on request, and one employee personally explained the vegan dishes at the buffet.

Breakfast service

On the best mornings, the service was personal and highly attentive. On one Saturday, empty buffet platters were replenished slowly, used dishes remained on tables and orders took too long. At €55, these delays are difficult to overlook. Breakfast is worthwhile when included in the room rate. When paying separately, I recommend confirming that both the buffet and à la carte selections are fully available.

Matsuhisa and room service

Matsuhisa combines Japanese cuisine with Peruvian influences. The sushi and well-known Nobu dishes used fresh ingredients and balanced seasoning. A four-course event dinner was more ordinary, and one steak arrived considerably less cooked than requested. Some room-service portions were also small. During part of the afternoon, the full food menu was unavailable, which was inconvenient for a hotel of this standard.

Rooftop bar and lounge

The rooftop terrace overlooks the Frauenkirche and much of central Munich. The view is especially attractive around sunset. Cocktails and champagne are expensive but well made. Service could be excellent, yet an unreserved visit on a busy afternoon resulted in an unwelcoming bar seat and a long wait to order. I recommend reserving a table for weekends and sunset hours.

Mandarin Oriental Fitness and Wellness

Gym, sauna and steam room

The gym was compact but equipped with modern, high-quality machines. During one stay, the sauna and steam room were accessible 24 hours a day. The wellness area itself is small, and it becomes less relaxing when several guests arrive at once.

Pool and opening hours

There is no indoor swimming pool. The rooftop pool operates seasonally and depends on weather and opening dates. During a later stay, the spa was closed on Sunday. Guests booking mainly for the wellness facilities should confirm the opening hours of the sauna, steam room and rooftop pool before arrival.

Mandarin Oriental Staff Service

Door staff and reception

The door team handled luggage and vehicles immediately. On an evening when rain was possible, an employee ran outside to bring us an umbrella. Reception staff remembered names and paid attention to room preferences and special occasions. Management also became involved when a room issue required a quick solution. During busy periods, however, waiting guests were not always acknowledged promptly.

Concierge and restaurant staff

The concierge assisted with restaurant bookings, transport and sightseeing plans. Shopping bags left at the entrance could be delivered directly to the room. Breakfast employees also shared useful café and walking recommendations for later parts of the trip. These positive experiences were offset by the failed car reservation, incorrect credit card charge and unreturned cash change.

Housekeeping staff

Extra towels, alternative pillows and mattress toppers were delivered quickly. Personal belongings were treated carefully. One defensive response after a minibar restocking issue showed that the service level was not identical in every interaction.

Mandarin Oriental Parking and Transport

Valet parking

A rental car was taken immediately by the valet team, and both the vehicle and luggage were handled efficiently. The exact valet price was not recorded in the supplied stay information, so I recommend confirming it before arrival. In this part of central Munich, valet parking is easier than searching for a public parking space on narrow old-town streets.

Public transport

Marienplatz station is within walking distance. Most central attractions, shops and restaurants can be reached without a car. A rental car is unnecessary for a stay focused on central Munich. Any private hotel transfer should be confirmed in writing with the final price included.

Mandarin Oriental Advantages and Disadvantages

Advantages

The main strengths are the location, room cleanliness and personal service. Marienplatz, Hofbräuhaus, Maximilianstraße, the Residenz and the National Theatre are all within walking distance. Deluxe and Mandarin rooms provide generous space, comfortable beds and excellent bathrooms. The complimentary minibar, Matsuhisa restaurant and rooftop view add further value to the stay.

Disadvantages

A Premier Deluxe Room at approximately €1,000 per night and breakfast at €55 per person are expensive. Some entry-level rooms are smaller and show wear. Problems occurred with charging pads, air conditioning, internet, automatic toilets and minibar restocking. Other drawbacks include the nearby construction site, occasional nighttime noise, the small wellness area and the lack of an indoor pool. Individual service and billing mistakes are also difficult to accept at this level.

Overall satisfaction and willingness to return

Mandarin Oriental is not flawless, but it remains a strong choice for travellers who value a central address, a high-quality room and personalised service. On a future visit, I would book a Deluxe Room or Mandarin Room, compare breakfast-inclusive rates and request a quiet room away from the construction site. I would also confirm spa hours and transport charges in advance. With those precautions, I would stay here again.

Mandarin Oriental Location

Walking from Marienplatz

From Marienplatz, walk east with the New Town Hall behind you. Continue along Sparkassenstraße and towards Münzstraße, reaching the hotel area in about five minutes. From Hofbräuhaus, it is a short walk to the northeast. From Maximilianstraße, take one of the side streets leading south towards the hotel. The Residenz and National Theatre are also within easy walking distance.
