Stay Summary
A central Munich hotel with strong location and some clear limits
Motel One München-Sendlinger Tor is a practical city hotel in central Munich. The location near Sendlinger Tor is its biggest advantage. Marienplatz, the old town, shopping streets, restaurants, cafés, public transport and many sights are easy to reach on foot. The rooms are small, but mostly clean and functional. Courtyard-facing rooms and upper-floor rooms were quiet and comfortable. Ground-floor rooms and rooms near staff areas were much less pleasant because of hallway noise, door noise and early morning movement. Breakfast was simple but decent, with bread, coffee, cheese, cold cuts, fruit, yogurt and cereal. The seating area was cramped. I would stay here again for a short Munich trip without a car, but I would request a quiet room on a higher floor.
Room Review by Type
Standard Double Room
The standard double room was compact. It worked for a short Munich stay, but two suitcases made the room feel tight. The room had a large bed, small bedside tables, a small desk, a chair, TV, open hanging space, bedside lighting and power outlets. There was no closed wardrobe, minibar, fridge, kettle or coffee machine. For sleeping, showering and spending most of the day outside, it was enough. For a longer stay, it felt limited.
The bed was generally comfortable. The mattress was soft, the bedding felt pleasant, and the pillows were not too high. Most nights were comfortable. There were some inconsistencies though. One pillowcase had a small hole, and one mattress felt worn. Overall, the bed was still one of the better parts of the stay.
Single Room and Ground-Floor Room
The single room felt very small. It was fine for one person with light luggage, but it did not feel comfortable for spending much time inside. The bathroom was tiny. The shower worked, but water spread across the floor easily in one room. One bathroom door kept closing by itself after a shower, which was annoying.
I would avoid ground-floor rooms. In those rooms, hallway doors, staff movement and early morning noise were easy to hear. Rooms close to staff areas were especially noisy. If sleep matters, ask for a higher floor and a courtyard-facing room.
Upper Floors and Courtyard Rooms
The upper-floor rooms and courtyard-facing rooms were much better. They were still small, but much quieter. With the window closed, the city noise was low. Some rooms had a view toward the church or the Munich city center, which made the stay more pleasant. The windows could be opened, which helped with fresh air. In rooms near the entrance or street, I kept the window closed because of outside noise and cigarette smoke.
A top-floor room with a balcony was one of the better stays. The room was still simple, but the view and quietness made a real difference. At this hotel, room location matters a lot.
Cleanliness and Bedding
Room Cleaning and Smell
Most rooms were clean. The bed area, bathroom, washbasin and shower were usually well maintained. The cleaning staff did a very good job on several stays. Towels were mostly fresh, and the room smell was neutral. Rooms with good ventilation felt better.
There were exceptions. In one room, I found hair near the bed and in the bathroom. Another room was dustier than expected. Some hallways and room details felt older than newer Motel One hotels. The general cleanliness was good, but not every room was spotless.
Mattress, Duvet and Pillows
The mattresses were mostly soft and comfortable. The bedding felt clean and light. The pillows were soft and easy to sleep on. Guests who prefer very firm beds may find the mattress too soft.
The setup was not always perfect. In one stay, two guests had only one bath towel in the room. In another stay, the duvet felt too small. Extra towels were available from reception, but the basic setup should have been better.
Bathroom and Toilet
Shower, Water Pressure and Hot Water
The bathroom was small but usable. The shower pressure was good, and hot water came quickly. The temperature stayed stable during showers. There was a mirror, hairdryer, hand soap and combined shower gel/shampoo. The large refill bottles were practical.
The main issue was space. Some shower areas were narrow. The floor got wet easily after showering. One bathroom had a high step into the shower. The washbasin area did not have much space for toiletries. For a short city stay, it was acceptable. For guests who want a larger bathroom, it will feel tight.
Towels and Amenities
The towels were clean, but the number of towels was not always enough. I had to request extra towels. There were no slippers, coffee machine, kettle, minibar, iron or ironing board. There was also no phone in the room, so any request meant going down to reception. This is one of the hotel’s clear drawbacks.
Noise, Heating, Air Conditioning and Wi-Fi
Noise by Room Location
Courtyard rooms were quiet. I slept well there, and the room felt calm with the window closed. Rooms facing the street, entrance or park were less comfortable. With the window open, conversations, traffic, cigarette smoke and night noise came in. In one room above the bar, music and bass were audible. Staff lowered the music after I asked, but sensitive sleepers should avoid rooms near the bar.
Hallway doors were loud. This was especially noticeable on the ground floor and near staff areas. Other guests in the hallway were also easy to hear. For a quiet stay, request a room away from the elevator, bar, entrance and staff rooms.
Room Temperature and Internet
Room temperature was inconsistent. In one room, it stayed cool even with the heating set high. In another room, the air conditioning worked well. In winter, the system worked more like heating or ventilation than real cooling. In summer, this matters because opening a street-facing window is not always comfortable.
Wi-Fi was one of the weakest points. Sometimes it worked, sometimes the signal was weak, and in one room it was barely usable. It was fine for basic browsing on a good day. It was not reliable enough for video calls or work that needs stable internet.
Price and Payment
Room Rate and Breakfast Cost
Prices changed depending on the season. I paid about 175 euros per night for a standard double room without breakfast during a busy period. For a two-night stay with breakfast, I paid 543.80 euros in total. Breakfast cost 17.40 euros per person on one stay and 18 euros per person on another stay. For central Munich, the price makes sense, but the rooms are small and the in-room amenities are limited.
This hotel is worth it mainly when you make full use of the location. If you expect a large room, detailed service and many extras, the value is less convincing.
Booking and Payment
I booked online. For reservations without prepayment, I paid by card at check-in. Breakfast and parking were checked at checkout. Reservation and passport checks were usually quick. With online check-in, getting the key took only a few minutes.
During busy arrival times, I still had to wait. Even with pre-check-in, there was a line once. Checkout was simple: return the key, check extra charges and leave. Luggage storage after checkout worked well.
Check-In and Check-Out
Arrival and Waiting Time
Check-in was usually fast. Staff checked the booking and passport, explained payment and handed over the room card. Once, the room was ready at around 9:30 a.m., which was very helpful after arriving early.
Not every arrival was equally good. One staff member gave only the minimum information. Room location, breakfast times and parking options were not always explained clearly. When I asked about the garage, I had to ask again to get enough information. The reception experience depended a lot on the person working at the desk.
Departure and Luggage Storage
Checkout was easy. Extra charges were checked quickly, and that was it. Luggage storage was convenient. I could leave my bags and walk back into the old town. Staff did not always ask whether the stay had been good. That is not a major issue, but a warmer goodbye would improve the experience.
Breakfast Review
Food and Quality
Breakfast was simple but good enough. There was bread, rolls, croissants, cheese, cold cuts, yogurt, cereal, fruit and coffee. The products were decent, with several organic items, and the coffee was good. Vegan options were available. For a light breakfast, it worked well.
Hot food was limited. There was no scrambled egg, bacon or sausage. The selection did not change much. Gluten-free options were limited. For a multi-day stay, I preferred using a nearby bakery or café on some mornings.
Breakfast Seating
The breakfast area was too small. The lounge looked nice, but the tables were small and seats were close together. At peak times, finding seats together was difficult. Some mornings, many tables were already full shortly after 7:30 a.m. The breakfast staff were friendly and helpful, but the space itself was the weak point. Go early if you plan to eat breakfast at the hotel.
Parking and Arriving by Car
Hotel Garage
The hotel has an underground garage, but spaces are limited. On late arrivals, it was often full. The hotel garage cost about 30 euros per night. For central Munich, that price was expected. The bigger issue was availability. I would not rely on getting a hotel parking space.
Nearby Paid Parking
When the hotel garage was full, I used a nearby paid garage. At Contipark Oberanger, I paid about 45 euros for 24 hours. For two nights, parking came to about 90 euros. There was also a walk back to the hotel, which was not ideal with luggage. For this hotel, public transport is the better choice. If you arrive by car, include parking costs in your budget.
Staff and Service
Reception
Many reception staff were friendly, quick and helpful. They helped with directions, luggage storage and room requests. A quiet room request for older family members was handled well. Early check-in also worked when the room was ready.
There were weaker moments too. Some answers were too brief, parking information was not always clear, and individual staff members seemed uninterested. Since there is no phone in the room, service issues are more noticeable.
Breakfast Staff, Cleaning Staff and Bar
The cleaning staff were usually very thorough. Several rooms were very well maintained. Breakfast staff were friendly, firm and attentive during busy times. The bar had a good atmosphere and was useful in the evening. Service at the bar was inconsistent. Once, a drink was placed down without explanation and had not been mixed properly. On busy evenings, it took a while to get noticed.
Pros and Cons
What I Liked
The location is the main reason to stay here. Sendlinger Tor, the old town, Marienplatz, shopping streets, U-Bahn, tram and restaurants are all close. Rooms are small but mostly clean. Beds are comfortable, and courtyard rooms are quiet. Breakfast is simple but usable. For short Munich trips and business stays, the hotel is practical.
What I Did Not Like
Rooms are small, bathrooms are tight, and amenities are limited. There is no room phone, kettle, coffee machine, minibar, slippers or ironing equipment. Wi-Fi was unreliable. The breakfast area was cramped. The two elevators were slow at busy times. The garage has too few spaces, and nearby parking is expensive. I would avoid ground-floor rooms and rooms near staff areas.
Overall Satisfaction and Would I Stay Again
Who Should Book This Hotel
I would book Motel One München-Sendlinger Tor again when traveling to Munich without a car and needing a clean central hotel for a few nights. It works well for a city trip. For a longer stay, heavy luggage or lots of time in the room, I would choose a larger hotel. When booking, request a quiet room on an upper floor facing the courtyard.
Location and Getting Around
From Sendlinger Tor to the Hotel
The hotel is only a short walk from Sendlinger Tor. U-Bahn and tram stops are very close. From Munich Central Station, it is just a short underground ride, and with light luggage it is also walkable. Walking toward the old town, Marienplatz, the town hall, Viktualienmarkt, churches, restaurants and shopping streets are easy to reach. Theresienwiese is also walkable in good weather. For a Munich hotel, this location is excellent, especially without a car.
