Leonardo Hotel Review Summary
Strong location, useful rooms, and a few clear weak points
Leonardo is a good Munich hotel choice when the main plan is Olympiapark, Olympiahalle, BMW Welt, or a trip with easy tram access to the city centre. Public transport is close, and getting to the main station, Karlsplatz, and the old town is simple. The room experience depends a lot on the room type and room position. A courtyard-facing room was quiet and comfortable, while a street-facing room became noisy as soon as the window was opened. The beds were generally comfortable, the room size was fair for Munich, and several rooms had a coffee machine, kettle, fridge, safe, and small desk. The bathroom was the biggest issue. Some bathrooms were fine, but others had limescale, mould in the shower joints, slow drainage, weak water pressure, old towels, or too little space around the sink. Breakfast cost 18 euros per person and included bread, coffee, eggs, cheese, ham, fruit, yoghurt, and warm dishes. The choice was good, but the egg dishes were uneven. I paid about 179 euros for one night in a double room on one stay, and 170 euros total for a solo business stay. The hotel garage cost 15 euros per night. I would stay at Leonardo again, but I would request a quiet courtyard-facing room on a higher floor and check the bathroom right after arrival.
Leonardo Room Review by Room Type
Standard double room and bed comfort
The standard double room was simple but practical for a short stay in Munich. It was not a luxury room, but it had enough space for one suitcase and basic movement around the bed. With two large suitcases, it became tighter. The bed was usually the best part of the room. The mattress was on the firmer side and gave good support. In some rooms it felt just right; in another room it was a little too hard. The pillows also varied. One room had pillows at a comfortable height, while another had soft foam pillows that were not great for sleeping. The sheets were usually clean, but a stained bed runner stood out in one room. For a concert stay or a short city trip, the standard double room does the job, but it is worth checking the bed area and carpet as soon as you enter.
Comfort room and larger rooms
The larger rooms felt much better for more than one night. A wardrobe, safe, fridge, kettle, capsule coffee machine, and small desk made the room practical for both leisure and work. The fridge was especially useful during a longer stay. A bottle of water and coffee capsules were provided, but they were not always replaced after the first day. Once, a half-used water bottle from a previous guest was left in the room. That was a clear housekeeping mistake and should not happen. The furniture was functional, and some rooms felt fairly modern, but the condition was not always consistent.
Suite and family room experience
The suites and larger rooms were much more comfortable in terms of space. For three people or a family, the room did not feel cramped. Storage was better, and one larger room had a spacious, modern bathroom. Another large room, however, had a bathroom that was too small for the room size. There was not enough space around the sink for two people’s toiletries, and the towel rail was placed awkwardly above the toilet. In some rooms, panels above the bed were not fixed properly, and small repairs were needed on the floor or walls. The bigger rooms are worth considering, but room size alone does not guarantee a better stay. The bathroom condition matters just as much.
Cleanliness, smell, and carpet
Cleanliness was inconsistent. I had rooms that were clean and comfortable, but also rooms with stained carpet, dusty corners, and bathroom issues. The carpet in the rooms and corridors is one of the hotel’s weakest parts. It looks old in places and has visible marks. In one room, the air freshener smell was very strong; after airing the room, the drain smell from the bathroom became clear. Another room smelled of cigarette smoke and had to be changed. One bathroom had drain flies, which made the bathroom feel unhygienic. These issues are not constant in every room, but they happen often enough to be worth mentioning.
Noise, windows, and sleep quality
Courtyard-facing rooms were quiet and good for sleeping. Street-facing rooms were acceptable with the windows closed, but opening the window brought in traffic noise immediately. A room next to the lift was not ideal because the lift movement could be heard often. Lower-floor rooms can also pick up noise from the bar area at night. The curtains did not block all light in every room. For a better stay, I recommend asking for a courtyard-facing room, a higher floor, and a room away from the lift. If fresh air at night is important, avoid the street side.
Heating, cooling, lighting, and room equipment
The room temperature was usually comfortable, but not always perfect. During one winter stay, the radiator was off when I entered the room, so I had to turn it up myself. On another stay, the window had been left tilted after cleaning while the heating was on high. Lighting was also uneven. Some rooms had no main ceiling light, and if a floor lamp did not work, the room felt too dark in the evening. Power sockets were available near the bed and desk. Lifts served all floors, which was convenient, but the lift buttons looked worn, and there was once a lift problem. The hotel works well for normal use, but some details need better maintenance.
Leonardo Bathroom and Toilet Review
Shower, water pressure, and hot water
The bathroom has the biggest effect on the overall stay at Leonardo. In the better rooms, the bathroom was clean, spacious enough, and easy to use. Hot water usually came quickly. In other rooms, the water pressure was weak, especially on a higher floor. Some shower trays drained too slowly, and water ran onto the bathroom floor. Limescale on the glass, dark shower joints, and rusty areas were visible in some bathrooms. The worst bathroom-related issue was a long water outage, followed by a cold shower in the evening. For one night this may be bearable; for a longer stay, it is a real problem.
Sink, toilet, and bathroom space
Small bathrooms had too little space around the sink. A toothbrush, razor, and small wash bag quickly filled the area. One sink had paint marks, and one toilet looked only partly cleaned. Dark deposits inside the toilet and old limescale are details guests notice immediately. Some bathroom fans were very loud, and one bathroom door did not close properly. When the bathroom is in good shape, the stay is fine. When the bathroom is old or poorly cleaned, the hotel feels below the level it should offer.
Towels and amenities
Towels were provided, but the condition varied. Some towels were thin and worn, and on one stay there was no large bath towel. Basic toiletries were available, but I recommend bringing personal products. The fridge, coffee machine, kettle, safe, and arrival-day water are useful benefits. Not everything was replaced automatically during longer stays. Laundry service was also not something I could rely on. If daily cleaning, fresh towels, or refills are needed, it is best to ask reception clearly.
Leonardo Check-in, Check-out, and Payment
Check-in and waiting time
Check-in was usually quick. The reservation and ID were checked, and the room key was handed over without much waiting. On one stay, I could enter the room before 3 p.m., and on another stay the room was ready around 11:30 a.m., which was very helpful. Still, I would not rely only on online check-in and an entered arrival time. On one stay, a credit card authorization issue created a problem, and the communication around it was not good. Since then, I always check card approval and booking status before arrival.
Room price and payment method
I booked online and paid by card. Some stays were paid at the hotel, while other bookings already had the credit card attached in advance. A double room cost about 179 euros for one night on one stay. A solo business stay cost 170 euros total. Breakfast was 18 euros per person and could be added at the hotel. Parking in the hotel garage cost 15 euros per night. At check-out, the hotel checked breakfast, parking, and any open charges, then the process was finished quickly.
Check-out
Check-out was easy. I returned the key card, checked the bill, and left without a long wait. Around breakfast time, the lobby and lifts can get a little busier, so it is better to leave a few extra minutes. Once I forgot an item in the room after check-out, and the staff helped quickly. That part of the service was very good.
Leonardo Breakfast and Bar Review
Breakfast for 18 euros
Breakfast cost 18 euros per person. The selection included rolls, bread, cheese, ham, cold cuts, jam, fruit, vegetables, yoghurt, cereal, juice, coffee, scrambled eggs, boiled eggs, bacon, potatoes, and warm sausages. There were also different milk options, including oat milk, almond milk, and lactose-free milk. The coffee machine served espresso, regular coffee, and latte. A pancake machine was available too, which worked well for families. For a city hotel, breakfast is one of Leonardo’s stronger points.
Quality and busy times
Breakfast is best early. Around 7:30 a.m. it was much more comfortable, while around 9 a.m. the room became crowded. Staff usually refilled food quickly and cleared tables fast. Still, the breakfast room feels small during peak time. The overall quality was good, but not everything was strong. The scrambled eggs were watery on some days, and boiled eggs were cold and hard. More fresh fruit and vegetables would improve the breakfast. Black tea was missing once, and a better vegan option would also help. Even with those weak points, breakfast remains a good part of the hotel.
Bar and evening food options
The bar is small but pleasant for a beer in the evening. On some evenings the service was friendly and quick. On another evening, the bar service felt overwhelmed and unfriendly. It was also unpleasant when smoke from staff near an open door came into the bar area. The hotel is not a strong choice for lunch or dinner inside the building. After breakfast, it is better to use nearby restaurants or food delivery. When I ordered delivery, the reception provided plates, which was a helpful touch.
Leonardo Parking and Staff
Underground parking
The hotel has its own underground garage, which is convenient when arriving by car. Access from the Olympiaring side is straightforward. Parking cost 15 euros per night. The garage is useful but narrow. Some spaces use ramp-style platforms, which are not ideal for low cars. A normal car fits, but opening the door can be difficult when another car is close. Larger cars need extra care. If you want to save money, nearby street parking may be possible, but with luggage or a late arrival the hotel garage is easier. For large or low vehicles, public transport is the better choice.
Reception staff
Reception staff were usually friendly and helpful. Check-in was fast, room-change requests were handled, and forgotten items after check-out were dealt with quickly. English communication was easy. Some staff members were less warm and gave too little information, especially around payment or booking issues. Overall, the reception can be very good, but the service is not equally strong every time.
Breakfast staff and housekeeping
Breakfast staff worked hard during busy periods. Tables were cleared quickly, food was refilled, and large groups were handled well. Some staff members were less friendly, and one noisy moment at the buffet felt unprofessional. Housekeeping was less consistent. Some rooms were cleaned well, while others still had hair, dust, stains, or a poorly cleaned bathroom. Once, a cosmetic bag had been dropped and left on the floor with the contents scattered. For longer stays, it is worth telling reception clearly whether the room should be cleaned and towels replaced.
Leonardo Overall Satisfaction and Would I Stay Again
Strengths
Leonardo’s strengths are location, transport access, breakfast, and value for Munich. It is very practical for Olympiapark, Olympiahalle, BMW Welt, and public transport into the city. The beds are usually comfortable, courtyard rooms are quiet, and the room equipment with fridge, coffee machine, and safe is useful. If the room price is around 170 to 179 euros per night, the hotel can be a good deal for Munich.
Weak points
The weak points are the bathroom, carpet, and cleaning consistency. Stained carpets, old towels, weak water pressure, slow drainage, limescale, and mould in the shower should not appear so often. Bathroom smells and cigarette smoke in a room are also serious drawbacks. The garage is narrow, breakfast becomes crowded, and some street-facing rooms are too loud with open windows.
My recommendation
I would book Leonardo again, but carefully. I recommend asking for a quiet courtyard-facing room on a higher floor and away from the lift. After check-in, check the bathroom, bed linen, carpet, and smell right away. If something is wrong, report it immediately. For travellers looking for a Munich hotel near Olympiapark with good transport, fair prices, breakfast, and practical room facilities, Leonardo is a useful choice. For guests who expect a flawless bathroom and perfectly consistent cleaning, it is worth thinking twice before booking.
Leonardo Location and Nearby Transport
From Olympiapark, tram stops, and central Munich
Leonardo sits south of Olympiapark, making it convenient for concerts, events, and visits to BMW Welt. Walking to the Olympiapark area takes about 20 to 30 minutes depending on the exact destination inside the park. The nearby tram makes it easy to reach the city centre, Karlsplatz, and the main station. Bus and S-Bahn stops are also within easy reach. Restaurants, pubs, and beer gardens are nearby, so dinner does not require a long trip. The hotel is not directly in the old town, but the transport access is strong. For a Munich stay focused on Olympiapark, public transport, and reasonable pricing, Leonardo works well.
