Quick Stay Overview
Room, Breakfast, and Location
Hampton by Hilton Munich City Center East is a modern hotel in the eastern part of Munich, close to Berg am Laim S-Bahn station. It is a good choice for business trips, short Munich visits, and family stays when staying right in the old town is not necessary. My standard room with breakfast included cost about 120 euros per night when booked early. During trade fairs and major events, the same room type went above 200 euros per night, and at that price the value was weaker. I booked online and paid at the hotel by card. On a prepaid stay, the front desk still asked about payment, which was confusing for a moment, but it was fixed after checking the reservation. The rooms were mostly clean, the shower pressure was strong, the bed was comfortable if you like firm mattresses, and the included breakfast was good. The downsides were the small room size, the glass bathroom door, uneven air conditioning, and occasional housekeeping issues.
Check-In and Check-Out
Arrival and Reservation Check
Check-in was usually quick. Passport and reservation checks did not take long, and I received the key card without much waiting. Early check-in was possible when the room was ready. Late arrival was also handled without trouble. The amount of information at the front desk depended on the staff member. Some explained the elevators, Wi-Fi, breakfast hours, parking garage, and public transport clearly. Others simply handed over the key card, so I had to ask about the basics.
Payment and Departure
For my regular online bookings, I paid at the hotel by credit card. Breakfast was included, so there was no separate breakfast charge. The main extra cost was parking when I used the garage. On a prepaid booking, the staff asked how I wanted to pay even though the room had already been paid for. It was sorted after checking the booking details, but prepaid guests should keep the confirmation ready. Check-out was simple. I returned the key card, checked any extra charges, paid the parking fee when needed, and left without a long wait.
Price and Room Types
Standard Room
The standard room was a good deal at about 120 euros per night with breakfast included. For Munich, that price is fair because the hotel is clean, modern, and well connected by S-Bahn. When the room costs more than 200 euros per night, I would compare other hotels first. The room is still clean and practical, but it is not large, and service quality can vary. Early booking is the best way to get good value here.
Solo Business Stay
For one person, the room worked well. The desk was fine for a laptop and short work sessions, the sockets were placed well enough, and the Wi-Fi was fine for normal use. Downloading large work files was slow on one stay. With one suitcase, the room was manageable. The lighting was not ideal. In the evening, the room was either too dark without the main lights or too bright with them on. A small floor lamp near the chair would make the room much more comfortable.
Couple and Family Stay
For two people, the standard room can feel tight. Two large suitcases take up a lot of the free space, and in some rooms two people cannot pass each other easily. Keeping luggage near the entrance and unpacking only the essentials worked best. For families, connecting rooms were much better. They gave more space, made bathroom use easier, and worked well for two adults with children. For a family stay, I recommend connecting rooms over one standard room.
Room Condition and Sleep Quality
Size and Facilities
The rooms are modern, simple, and mostly well maintained. The bed, desk, floor, and bathroom were usually clean. The room is not spacious, but it is fine for a short Munich stay or a business trip. Storage is limited. The wardrobe is placed near the bathroom door, which is not very practical. More hooks for coats, towels, and wet clothes would help. The TV mainly had German channels, so English entertainment was limited. There was no fridge in the room.
Bed, Mattress, and Pillows
The bed was clean and generally comfortable. The mattress is firm. Guests who like firm beds will probably sleep well. Side sleepers or guests who prefer softer mattresses may find it too hard. The pillows were low and thin. Even two pillows did not always support the neck well. The sheets were clean and fresh. One bed creaked with every movement, which made sleeping difficult. In that situation, I recommend asking the front desk for another room.
Cleanliness and Smell
Most rooms were clean and smelled fresh. The windows could be opened, which helped with fresh air. The bed, desk, bathroom, and floor were usually properly cleaned. There were some misses. In one room, hairs from a previous guest were still on the floor and in the bathroom. On another stay, the room was not cleaned even though I had been out for hours, and I only received fresh towels. The hotel’s usual standard is good, but housekeeping was not equally reliable every time.
Bathroom and Toilet
Shower and Towels
The shower was one of the best parts of the room. Water pressure was strong, hot water came quickly, and the shower area was comfortable enough. Towels were usually clean and thick enough. One towel smelled bad on one stay, and one sink drained slowly. These were not constant problems, but they happened. For longer stays, I recommend checking the towels, sink, and dispensers on the first day.
Glass Door and Open Shower
The glass bathroom door is awkward. With a partner or family member, privacy is limited. In some rooms, a mirror outside the bathroom makes it even more uncomfortable. At night, the bathroom light brightens the whole room and can wake the other person. The shower is not fully enclosed, so water easily gets onto the bathroom floor. The sink is small, and there is not enough space for toiletries. The bathroom looks modern, but it is not the most practical bathroom.
Air Conditioning, Heating, and Noise
Room Temperature
Air conditioning was not strong in every room. On warm days, the room stayed stuffy longer than I wanted. In winter, one room felt too cold because the heating did not work well. Depending on the season, the system may run mainly in heating mode, so real cooling is not always available. The windows can be opened, but the railway and road nearby make that difficult at night. If you are sensitive to heat, ask for a quieter room away from the railway side.
Noise
With the windows closed, the hotel was quiet. Even though the S-Bahn and railway tracks are close, train noise was not a problem inside the room. Hallway noise, elevator noise, and door sounds were also limited. With the window open, it is different. You can hear trains, street noise, and people outside. For good sleep, it is better to keep the window closed at night.
Amenities and Room Facilities
In the Room
The room had a kettle, instant coffee, tea, an iron, an ironing board, and a hair dryer. Sockets were enough for a phone and laptop. There was no fridge in the room. If you need to keep medicine or food cold, the front desk can help, but an in-room fridge would be more convenient. Complimentary bottled water should not be expected. The small lobby bar is fine for beer or wine, but it is not a large hotel bar.
Bathroom Amenities
The bathroom had shampoo, body wash, and conditioner. The scent was a bit strong but usable. Toothbrushes, razors, cotton pads, and other small toiletries should be brought with you. On one stay, the body wash dispenser was empty and had to be requested. For a stay of more than one night, check the dispensers right after entering the room.
Breakfast Review
Selection and Quality
Breakfast was included in my room rate, so I did not pay a separate breakfast fee. For an included breakfast, the selection was good. There were breads, rolls, pretzels, cheese, ham, yogurt, fruit, cereal, juice, coffee, espresso, and hot items. The coffee machine was good, and there were usually enough seats. Solo travelers had comfortable seating, and families could find tables without too much trouble. It was a good breakfast before sightseeing or work.
Breakfast Downsides
Breakfast was not the same every day. Scrambled eggs were not always available. Bacon and pancakes also appeared on some days and not on others. On days with only boiled eggs, the hot breakfast felt weaker. Some pastries were too hard, and hot food was not always hot enough. During busy times, refills could be slow. Still, with bread, cheese, yogurt, fruit, and coffee, breakfast was enough for a normal morning.
Breakfast Staff
Breakfast staff were often attentive. Tables were cleared, the buffet area was checked, and one staff member even brought a small bag for fruit before a long trip. That was a nice service moment. On other mornings, used plates stayed on tables too long, and staff conversations were too loud. The breakfast area was usually good, but the service was not identical every morning.
Staff and Service
Front Desk
The front desk experience varied. Some staff were excellent and helped with early check-in, taxis, parking, the S-Bahn, and city directions. Others were colder and gave short answers. Wrong breakfast hours and incomplete information happened. The hotel can offer very good service, but it depends on who is working at the desk.
Housekeeping and Lost Items
Housekeeping was generally fine, but not perfect. Late cleaning, missed cleaning, and empty bathroom dispensers happened. Once, housekeeping knocked before check-out time, which interrupted the morning. Lost item handling was also not something I would rely on. Before leaving, I recommend checking under the bed, on the desk, in the bathroom, inside the wardrobe, and around the luggage area.
Parking and Public Transport
Hotel Garage
The hotel has an underground garage. It is bright, clean, and the parking spaces are reasonably large. Access works with the room key, so it is easier to check in first and then enter the garage. I paid about 23 euros per night for parking. On another stay, the rate was given as about 30 euros per night. That is not unusual for Munich, but it becomes expensive over several nights. I would not count on electric vehicle charging.
Street Parking and Transport
Free street parking is possible nearby, but it is difficult to find a space in the evening. If you arrive late, the garage is easier. For a city trip, you do not really need a car. The S-Bahn, tram, and bus stops are close, so getting into the city is easy. With heavy luggage or children, the garage is convenient. For light travel, public transport is the better choice.
Pros and Cons
What I Liked
The best parts were the clean rooms, strong shower pressure, included breakfast, and easy public transport. REWE, ALDI, and dm across the street are very useful for water, snacks, and toiletries. With the window closed, the room stayed quiet even though the railway is nearby. At a good price, this is a solid Munich hotel.
What Could Be Better
The rooms are not large. With two suitcases, space is tight. The glass bathroom door is not great for privacy, and the open shower makes the floor wet. Air conditioning and heating were not always strong enough. Breakfast sometimes missed basic items such as scrambled eggs or bacon. Front desk service and housekeeping were not consistent. This is not an old town hotel, so you need the S-Bahn or tram for most sightseeing.
Overall Rating and Would I Stay Again?
Who Should Book This Hotel
Hampton by Hilton Munich City Center East is a good choice for travelers who want a clean modern hotel with breakfast and fast public transport. It works for business trips, short Munich visits, and family stays. If you want to walk straight from the hotel into the main tourist area, book closer to the old town. If you care more about clean rooms, breakfast, and a quick ride to Marienplatz, this hotel fits well.
Would I Return?
Yes, I would stay again at the right price. Around 120 euros per night with breakfast included is fair for Munich. Above 200 euros per night, I would compare other hotels first. For the next stay, I recommend asking for a quiet room away from the railway side, checking the air conditioning right away, and looking over the bathroom, towels, and cleaning condition after entering the room.
Location and Getting Around
From Berg am Laim S-Bahn Station to the Hotel
The hotel is only a short walk from Berg am Laim S-Bahn station. After leaving the station, you walk along the path toward the hotel, and tram and bus stops are also nearby. Marienplatz takes about 10 to 15 minutes by S-Bahn, and Munich Central Station is easy to reach as well. A taxi to the city center takes about 15 minutes. The airport connection by S-Bahn is convenient, but if trains are disrupted, a taxi can cost about 64 euros. Across from the hotel are REWE, ALDI, and dm, which are useful for water, snacks, and toiletries. A bakery and a few casual restaurants are within walking distance, but the immediate area does not have many late-night food options. Depending on the station exit, the walk can include a rather dirty underpass, so at night I prefer the brighter way along the main road.
