Hotel Review Summary

A practical Munich hotel with excellent transport access

Hampton by Hilton Munich City West is a practical hotel in Munich Schwanthalerhöhe, especially if transport access matters more than a luxury stay. The location near Donnersbergerbrücke is the main reason to book it. The S-Bahn, tram and bus stops make it easy to reach Munich Central Station, Marienplatz, the city centre, Theresienwiese and the airport. There is also a supermarket nearby, which is useful because the rooms do not have a fridge or free bottled water. The rooms are generally simple, bright and well equipped for a short stay. The best rooms are clean, quiet and comfortable enough. The weaker rooms show issues with hard beds, creaky frames, bathroom cleaning, shower drainage, water pressure and air conditioning. I paid about 118 euros per night including breakfast on a weekday, about 145 euros per night on a weekend, and parking cost an additional 25 euros per night. I recommend this hotel for guests using public transport. I do not recommend bringing a large car unless parking is absolutely necessary.

Price and Payment

Room rate per night

For a weekday stay, I paid about 118 euros per night including breakfast. On a weekend, the room rate was about 145 euros per night. During busy Munich travel periods, the price went up to about 190 euros per night. For Munich, the price can be reasonable, especially considering the location and breakfast. The value depends heavily on the room condition. When the room was clean and quiet, the rate felt fair. When the bed was noisy or the bathroom needed better cleaning, the same price felt less convincing.

Card payment and extra charges

I booked online and used both prepaid card payment and card payment at the hotel. At check-in, the staff checked my passport and reservation. Payment itself was usually quick. Still, I recommend checking all extra charges before leaving. Parking is billed separately at 25 euros per night. If you need an invoice for business travel, confirm the billing name, company details and parking charge before check-out. The hotel is convenient, but the final bill should be checked carefully.

Check-in and Check-out

Arrival and waiting time

Official check-in starts at 3 p.m. When the reception was not busy, check-in was smooth and friendly. On one stay, I arrived around 1 p.m. and could already enter the room because it was ready. Luggage storage before check-in also worked well. Late check-in was handled patiently, and the key card was issued without stress. During busy periods, however, reception waiting time was longer. Reservation checks were not always fast, and one stay involved a less smooth room assignment. If anything feels unclear, it is better to ask immediately at the desk.

Departure and invoice

Check-out was usually simple. I returned the room card, checked the bill and confirmed any extras such as parking. With a breakfast-included booking, there was no separate breakfast charge. Luggage storage after check-out was helpful for spending extra time in Munich before departure. The only weak point was invoice handling. Business travellers should not leave the invoice request until the last minute. A few extra minutes at the desk can prevent billing problems later.

Room Types and Size

Double and twin rooms

The double room and twin room are fine for two people. The twin room had enough space for two beds, a desk, a chair, a wardrobe and luggage, although leaving two large suitcases fully open was not comfortable. For a short city trip or business stay, the room size is acceptable. The safe, iron, ironing board and desk were useful. There were sockets near the large mirror in the room, which helped when getting ready. The bathroom did not have a conveniently usable socket.

Sofa bed rooms

For three people, the room becomes tight once the sofa bed is opened. There is not enough space for several large suitcases, and moving around the room becomes awkward. For two guests, I would use the room again. For three adults, I would only choose it for a short stay. The sofa bed was not equally comfortable in every room, and some rooms did not provide good sleep on the extra bed.

Bed and Bedding

Mattress and pillows

The bed is the most divisive part of this hotel. Some rooms had clean bedding and acceptable comfort. Other rooms had mattresses that were very hard. If you like firm beds, this may be fine. If you prefer a softer mattress, sleep can be difficult. In several rooms, the bed frame creaked with small movements. The pillows were low and flat, so they did not support the neck well. Extra pillows can be requested, but they may not arrive quickly during busy hours. Ask early if you need them.

Bedding and towels

The bedding was mostly clean, and the towels were fresh enough for a normal stay. Still, housekeeping quality was not the same every time. Some rooms had hair on the floor, worn carpet or marks on furniture. Other rooms were properly prepared. This difference is important. The hotel can feel very good when the room is clean, but it can also disappoint when cleaning and maintenance fall short.

Room Cleanliness and Smell

Carpet, furniture and walls

Many rooms looked bright and modern at first. The furniture is simple, and the desk is good enough for a few days. However, some rooms showed clear signs of weaker maintenance. Office chairs had stains, hallway carpets looked tired, and some corners needed deeper cleaning. Dust, spider webs, dirty mirrors and marks around bathroom edges should not be present in this brand category. The hotel is not a bad property overall, but room care is inconsistent.

Air and windows

The room smell varied. Some rooms had a neutral, clean smell. Others smelled old or had a strong artificial room scent. The windows can be opened, which helps when the room is too warm. Since the hotel is close to railway tracks, open windows bring in train noise. With closed windows, outside noise was reduced well. For better sleep, I recommend asking for a room away from the railway side.

Air Conditioning and Noise

Temperature control

Air conditioning was one of the weaker parts of my stays. There is a control panel in the room, but it does not always give real control over the temperature. On warm days, lowering the setting did not cool the room enough. The reception can adjust the central system, but the result is not always noticeable. In some rooms, the air conditioning was also loud. During summer, check the cooling as soon as you enter the room.

Outside and hallway noise

The Donnersbergerbrücke location means room position matters. With the window closed, train noise was usually manageable. With the window open, the trains were clearly audible at night. Rooms near the elevator also had more hallway noise from guests with luggage. A room farther from the elevator and away from the railway side is the better choice for light sleepers.

Bathroom and Shower

Water pressure and hot water

In better rooms, the bathroom was bright and practical. The sink was fine, the shower space was enough for one person, and hot water usually arrived quickly. In some rooms, the water pressure was weak. The temperature also changed during the shower on a few stays, moving from warm to cold and then hot again. This is annoying when getting ready in the morning.

Shower screen, drainage and floor

The shower screen is too short. Water easily reaches the bathroom floor during a normal shower. In some rooms, drainage was slow, and water remained on the floor after showering. There were also rooms with leaking shower hoses or tired shower heads. The shower corners and tile joints need better cleaning. Dark marks and old residue in the shower are not acceptable for a Hilton-branded hotel. The toilet design was also poor in some rooms because water splashed during flushing. The bathroom is the area where the hotel needs the most improvement.

Amenities and towels

Basic shower gel, shampoo and conditioner were available. The scent was pleasant enough for a short stay. Bring your own toothbrush and toothpaste. A hair dryer was available, but it is worth checking before use. Towels were changed depending on housekeeping arrangements. If you need extra towels, request them early.

Breakfast

Breakfast selection and cost

Breakfast was included in my room rate. The weekday rate was about 118 euros per night including breakfast. When charged separately, breakfast was about 19 euros per person. The buffet included bread, croissants, cheese, ham, scrambled eggs, sausages, bacon, beans, fruit, yogurt, cereal, coffee, juice and a self-service waffle maker. For a quick morning meal before sightseeing or work, the selection is enough.

Food quality

On good days, breakfast was enjoyable and convenient. The waffles, bread, cheese, coffee and simple hot dishes worked well. For longer stays, the breakfast became repetitive because the selection stayed almost the same. On weaker days, the bread was dry, the coffee was bitter and the scrambled eggs were not good. I missed boiled eggs, more fresh fruit, oatmeal, oat milk and more vegetables. One waffle batter was noticeably too salty.

Breakfast room and crowding

The breakfast room gets crowded. After 8 a.m., finding a seat can be difficult. Plates and cutlery were missing at times, and queues formed around the coffee machines. When staff cleared tables quickly and replenished food, breakfast worked well. When staffing was low, the room became stressful. I recommend going early, ideally between 6:30 and 7:30 a.m.

Facilities and Convenience

Gym, laundry service and ironing

The gym was better than expected for this hotel category. It was enough for a short workout before or after the day. Laundry service is useful for longer stays. The room also had an iron and ironing board, which helped on business trips. The bar and small snack area near reception were useful for late returns.

No fridge and no free bottled water

The lack of a fridge is a clear downside. It is difficult to store drinks, water or small food items in the room. Free bottled water was not provided either. The nearby supermarket helps, but in summer or during family stays, the missing fridge is inconvenient. Guests expecting a minibar will be disappointed.

Parking

Underground parking price

The underground garage costs 25 euros per night. This is added to the room price. The garage is useful if you must arrive by car, but it is not pleasant. Confirm the ticket process at check-in and check the charge at check-out.

Narrow entrance and difficult exit

The garage entrance and exit are very narrow. With a large SUV or rental car, it is stressful. The barrier, ticket machine and turns are poorly placed. Some areas also had bird droppings, which makes the fee feel even less justified. Because public transport is excellent here, I recommend staying at this hotel without a car.

Staff and Service

Reception

Reception service varied. On good days, staff were friendly, helpful and efficient. Early check-in, late arrival, luggage storage and city transport questions were handled well. Some staff also helped with room temperature and extra pillows. On weaker days, phone contact was difficult, invoice questions took too long, and billing issues were not handled as warmly as expected. Service quality depends strongly on who is working at the desk.

Breakfast staff and housekeeping

The breakfast staff worked hard during busy times. They cleared tables and refilled food, but the number of staff was not always enough. Housekeeping was inconsistent. Some rooms were very clean, while others had hair, stains, dusty corners or bathrooms that needed deeper cleaning. If the room is not acceptable, report it immediately rather than waiting until check-out.

Pros and Cons

Pros

The biggest advantage is the location. Donnersbergerbrücke, tram and bus stops are all close. Munich Central Station, the city centre, Theresienwiese and the airport are easy to reach. Breakfast is useful for short stays. Rooms have a safe, iron, desk and enough basic storage. Some staff members are very helpful, and luggage storage or early check-in can be possible. The gym is also a real benefit.

Cons

The main disadvantages are bed comfort, bathroom condition, air conditioning and parking. Some beds are hard and creaky. Pillows are too flat. The bathroom floor gets wet easily during showers, and some rooms had poor drainage or cleaning issues. The air conditioning cannot always be controlled properly from the room. The garage is expensive, narrow and unpleasant for larger cars. Breakfast can also become crowded after 8 a.m.

Overall Satisfaction and Rebooking

Who should book this hotel

Hampton by Hilton Munich City West is best for guests who plan to use public transport. It works well for short city breaks, business trips and stays near Theresienwiese. It suits travellers who want breakfast, a practical room and a strong Munich transport location. It is less suitable for three adults in one room, guests who need a soft bed, or travellers arriving with a large car.

Would I stay again?

I would stay again, but only with clear expectations. I would request a quiet room away from the railway side and elevator, check the bathroom and bed immediately after entering, and avoid bringing a car. With a good room, this hotel is a sensible Munich option. With a weak room, poor shower or crowded breakfast, the stay loses value quickly. For location and short stays, it remains a useful choice.

Location and Nearby Transport

From Donnersbergerbrücke

From Donnersbergerbrücke station, the hotel is easy to reach on foot. After leaving the S-Bahn area, walk toward the south side of the tracks, and the hotel is only a few minutes away. From Munich Central Station, it is only two S-Bahn stops. The tram also stops nearby, making the city centre easy to reach without a car. Marienplatz, Karlsplatz, the main station and other central areas are simple to access by public transport.

Nearby shops and travel convenience

A supermarket is located across the street, which is very convenient for water, drinks and snacks. There are simple restaurants and cafés nearby, and Augustiner Bräustuben is also reachable on foot. Theresienwiese is close enough for a walk, which makes the hotel useful during Oktoberfest. For the airport, Donnersbergerbrücke offers convenient S-Bahn access. Overall, the location is the strongest reason to choose this hotel.
