Review Summary

Overall impression after several visits

Vino e Gusto is a small Italian restaurant in Munich Altstadt-Lehel with strong pasta, a serious wine selection, and a very personal hosting style. After several visits, the dish I remembered most was the spaghetti finished in the Parmesan wheel with black truffle. The bruschetta, carpaccio, Vitello Tonnato, and tiramisu were also memorable. This is not a cheap restaurant. For lunch with pasta and a drink, I paid around €30–40 per person. For dinner with a starter, main dish, wine, and dessert, I paid around €70–90 per person. With a menu and wine pairing, the bill reached about €80–100 per person. With a reservation, I usually had no wait. Parking was difficult, and the service was excellent on some visits but disappointing on others.

Food Review by Dish

Truffle pasta from the Parmesan wheel

If I had to recommend only one dish here, I recommend the spaghetti from the Parmesan wheel with black truffle. The Parmesan flavor was rich, the sauce coated the pasta well, and the truffle amount was generous. This was the dish that made the restaurant worth revisiting. On an earlier visit, this pasta was around €25, but recently it is safer to expect around €30. It was the strongest dish I had at Vino e Gusto.

Bruschetta and bread

The bruschetta was a strong starter. The bread had a light crispness outside and a soft center, while the topping added freshness and acidity. The house bread was also excellent. It worked well with wine, carpaccio, and pasta, and it was much better than a basic side bread. I would order it again as a shared starter.

Carpaccio and Vitello Tonnato

The beef carpaccio was tender and thinly sliced. Adding black truffle made it even better. The Vitello Tonnato was also a good cold starter, with a sauce that supported the meat rather than covering it. For starters such as carpaccio and Vitello Tonnato, I paid roughly in the mid-€20 range. Considering the quality, this felt reasonable for the location.

Pasta and risotto

The carbonara was rich and satisfying. On one visit, the carbonara was €25.90, which is expensive for a single pasta dish. The Bolognese was decent, Penne Napoli was easy to enjoy, and the risotto had balanced seasoning. Not every pasta dish was equally good. One ravioli dish had a filling that was too firm, and the sauce was too acidic. On another visit, the truffle pasta was drier than expected. The best choices were clearly the Parmesan-wheel truffle spaghetti and the carbonara.

Fish and meat

The salmon was moist and pleasant. The filet was tender and flavorful on a good visit. On another visit, the steak arrived late and part of it was too raw. Fritto Misto was close to €40, and at that price it did not feel special enough. The fish and meat dishes had good moments, but they were less consistent than the pasta.

Dessert

The tiramisu was the dessert to order. It was creamy, balanced, and had a good coffee note without feeling too heavy. Crema Catalana and chocolate lava cake were also good endings. A nougat and chocolate parfait was less successful. The portion was large, but the nuts did not taste fresh enough, and the chocolate pieces were too large. For dessert, I recommend the tiramisu.

Prices and Payment

What I paid

Vino e Gusto is priced like an upscale Italian restaurant in central Munich. At lunch, I paid around €30–40 per person for pasta and a drink. At dinner, with a starter, pasta or meat, wine, and dessert, I paid around €70–90 per person. A menu with wine pairing came to about €80–100 per person. A bottle of water was around €8.90, and a glass of wine ranged from about €8 to €15 depending on the choice. For two people ordering several dishes and wine, the total can easily approach €150–200.

Card payment and tipping

Card payment was available. One payment experience was uncomfortable because the tip was discussed too directly. Good service deserves a tip, but a direct push for one did not match the price level of the restaurant. Bringing some cash for tipping makes the payment process easier.

Wait Time and Reservation

Waiting to be seated

With a reservation, I usually had no wait. The restaurant gets busy in the evening, so I recommend making a reservation. Without one, getting a table is possible only with luck, especially on Friday evenings or during peak dinner hours.

Waiting for food

On most visits, the food came out quickly. The timing between starter, pasta, and dessert was comfortable. On one visit, however, the main courses were almost forgotten after the starter, and the pasta and steak arrived separately after a long delay. That was the weakest part of the experience. Service quality changes noticeably depending on how busy the restaurant is.

Staff and Atmosphere

Friendly service

The owner and many staff members were very welcoming. The host talked with guests, recommended wine, and spent time at the tables. English menus and English-speaking service were available, which made the restaurant easy to use as a visitor. The wine advice was especially good, and the restaurant had a warm, personal feel.

Service issues

The service was not perfect every time. On some visits, the staff seemed overwhelmed, orders took too long, and certain tables received more attention than others. One comment about tattoos was uncomfortable. The direct tip conversation was also a negative point. The food can be excellent, but the service is not always consistent.

Dining room atmosphere

The restaurant is small, cozy, and personal. On quiet days, it is easy to talk. On hot days, the dining room was too warm, and the lack of air conditioning made me skip dessert and coffee once. Two bulldogs were inside the restaurant. I enjoyed that part of the restaurant’s character, but it is a disadvantage for guests who do not like dogs around the dining area.

Parking and Restroom

Parking

I would not expect private parking here. The area has paid street parking, paid lots, and parking garages, but finding a spot was not easy. Since the restaurant is in central Munich, public transportation is the better choice.

Restroom

A restroom was available inside the restaurant. It was easy to use during the meal, and the small size of the restaurant made access simple.

Pros and Cons

Pros

The biggest strengths are the truffle pasta, wine selection, and personal hospitality. The Parmesan-wheel spaghetti, bruschetta, carpaccio, and tiramisu are worth ordering. The wine recommendations were strong, and the intimate atmosphere made the meal feel special. For a refined Italian dinner in central Munich, Vino e Gusto has real appeal.

Cons

The main downsides are the high prices and uneven service. Water, wine, and pasta are expensive. Some visits included long delays, a partly undercooked steak, acidic sauce, dry pasta, uncomfortable comments, and pressure around tipping. The dogs inside the restaurant add character, but they are not suitable for every guest.

Satisfaction and Revisit

Final rating

Overall, I was satisfied. Vino e Gusto is not flawless, but its best dishes are strong enough to justify another visit. The truffle pasta and tiramisu are the two items I would order again. The service issues are the main reason I would choose my visit time carefully.

Would I return

I would return, but I would make a reservation and avoid the busiest dinner hours. I recommend ordering bruschetta, carpaccio, the Parmesan-wheel truffle spaghetti, and tiramisu. With wine, it is best to expect at least €70 per person.
