Review Summary
IL TENORE is an Italian restaurant in Munich Altstadt-Lehel that combines a quiet side-street setting, polished service, and refined Italian food. After several visits, the strongest points were the pizza, pasta, fish dishes, desserts, cozy interior, and attentive staff. For a regular dinner, I usually paid around €30–40 per person. With wine, starter, main course, and dessert, the bill was closer to €50–70 per person. With special dishes, premium ingredients, and wine, the total could reach €70–90 per person. The weaker points were inconsistent truffle pasta, a disappointing shrimp pasta on one visit, expensive wine and bottled water, bread charges, and a few service moments that felt too pushy.
Food Review
Bruschetta and Starters
The bruschetta was fresh, and the bread was toasted well. It worked nicely as a light starter because the topping was bright without feeling heavy. The antipasti tasted good, but on one visit the portion felt small for the price. For better value, pizza and pasta are stronger choices.
Carbonara and Classic Pasta
The carbonara was good on several visits. At its best, it was creamy, salty, rich, and filling. On another visit, however, it was not creamy enough and had too much pepper. I still recommend it, but it is not the safest dish on the menu.
Seafood Pasta and Scampi
Seafood dishes were one of the better parts of the restaurant. The spaghetti with scampi had good flavor and balanced seasoning. The grilled scampi were cooked well and had a clean seafood taste. The shrimp pasta, however, was weak on one visit. It was bland, not creamy, and the shrimp tasted low in quality. Seafood is worth ordering here, but choosing from the daily specials is the better move.
Truffle Pasta and Premium Dishes
The truffle pasta was mixed. On a good visit, it had a rich aroma and matched the upscale mood of the restaurant. On another visit, it was too oily, the truffle was dry, and the flavor was flat. At around €30, that version did not justify the price. I would not order truffle pasta here with automatic high expectations.
Pizza and Margherita
Pizza was the most consistent choice. The Margherita was simple and well made, while the Pizza Mafiosa had stronger flavor and generous toppings. On one visit, the pizza was a little hard to cut, but the taste was still good. If I had to recommend only one dish, I recommend the Pizza Mafiosa.
Fish and Meat
The fish dishes were generally strong. Sea bass, branzino, swordfish, monkfish, and grilled scampi were cooked well and kept their original flavor. The lamb was tender and flavorful. Beef tongue and cheek were soft, rich, and satisfying. One veal dish was less convincing because it cost nearly €30 and came with only a few thin pieces. The venison loin tasted good, but one serving had too much sinew.
Dessert and Tiramisu
The pistachio tiramisu was one of the highlights. The cream was soft, the pistachio flavor was clear, and it worked well even after a full meal. Pistachio soufflé and other desserts were also satisfying. Compared with some starters, the desserts gave better value and left a stronger final impression.
Prices and Bill
Regular Dinner
For a normal dinner with pizza or pasta, I usually paid around €30–40 per person. A meal with bruschetta, pasta, and dessert also often stayed in that range. Lunch could be around €30–40 per person, while simpler pasta dishes could land closer to €10–20.
Wine and Drinks
With wine, starter, main course, and dessert, I paid around €50–70 per person. A glass of house wine was about €4.90. A bottle of wine started at around €32. The wine selection was acceptable but not large, and the pricing was on the high side.
Daily Specials and Premium Choices
With caviar, lamb, truffle potatoes, fish, or premium meat dishes, the bill reached around €70–90 per person. For a special dinner, that amount made sense. For a casual meal, it felt expensive. Some visits could go beyond €100 per person.
Extra Costs
Bread was charged at about €1.90 per person. That matters because the amount adds up quickly at a larger table. Bottled water was also expensive. To keep the final bill under control, it is better to check bread, water, and wine prices before ordering.
Waiting Time and Reservation
Waiting Time
With a reservation, I was seated right away. Without a reservation, I also got a table quickly on some visits. The wait was usually no wait to about 10 minutes. Food came out quickly, especially starters and drinks.
Reservation
A reservation is recommended for Saturday dinner and popular evening hours. Many tables were already booked on busy nights. Before or after the opera, theater, or shopping, booking a few days ahead is the better choice.
Payment Method
Card and Cash
Both card and cash payment were possible. Payment worked smoothly after meals with main dishes and wine. One negative point was a visit where more tip was expected even after a tip had already been given.
Parking
City Center Parking
Parking is difficult. The restaurant is in the center of Munich, and street parking is very limited. Free street parking can exist nearby, but it is not reliable. Walking or using public transport is the better option.
Staff Friendliness
Good Service
Service was mostly friendly, attentive, and professional. Food and wine recommendations were useful, and English service was available. Coats were handled, daily specials were explained, drinks arrived quickly, and the staff checked the table during the meal.
Service Issues
Not every visit was perfect. On one visit, it became harder to order more drinks because attention dropped. On another visit, the service felt a bit too business-minded. Asking for more tip after a tip had already been paid was not appropriate. Overall, the service was strong, but a few moments were disappointing.
Restroom
Facilities
The restroom was available, and the indoor area was clean. The dining room was well maintained and tidy. There was no baby changing board, which is important to know for families visiting with small children.
Pros
Wide Menu
IL TENORE offers pizza, pasta, fish, meat, daily specials, and desserts. That makes it suitable for different occasions. Pizza Mafiosa, spaghetti with scampi, and pistachio tiramisu were the strongest choices.
Atmosphere
The restaurant is stylish, cozy, and comfortable. Outdoor tables sit on a quieter side street, which makes dinner more relaxed. The location near the opera and theater is very convenient.
Hospitality
The staff give the restaurant a warm Italian character. Many recommendations were helpful, and table service was usually attentive. The restaurant feels polished without becoming cold or stiff.
Cons
Price Level
The price level is higher than a simple Italian restaurant. The location, service, and ingredient quality explain part of it, but wine, water, bread, and premium dishes can raise the final bill quickly.
Inconsistent Dishes
Not every dish was equally strong. Truffle pasta, shrimp pasta, and some meat dishes had weaknesses. For a safer order, I recommend pizza, scampi, fish from the daily specials, or pistachio tiramisu.
Some Service Pressure
The service was mostly excellent, but a few moments were uncomfortable. The tipping situation and slower drink attention remain clear downsides.
Satisfaction
Overall Rating
My overall satisfaction is high. IL TENORE offers good Italian food, a pleasant setting, and mostly excellent service. It is not cheap, and not every dish is equally successful, but the positive visits clearly outweigh the weak moments. For dinner in central Munich, it is a strong choice.
Revisit Intention
Recommendation
I would visit again. IL TENORE works especially well before or after the opera or Residenztheater. For the next visit, I recommend Pizza Mafiosa, spaghetti with scampi, and pistachio tiramisu. I recommend ordering wine by the glass and checking bread and water prices before the bill arrives.
Location Description
From Maximilianstraße
IL TENORE is located on a quiet side street near Maximilianstraße. From the Bavarian State Opera, walk toward Platzl and turn into the smaller street behind the main buildings. The restaurant is not directly on the main road, so it is easy to miss on a first visit.
From the Opera and Theater
The restaurant is a short walk from the Bavarian State Opera and Residenztheater. It is also walkable from Marienplatz. Around Platzl, the area is busier, but a few steps into the side street make the setting calmer. That makes IL TENORE a good place for a relaxed dinner in the city center.
