Review Summary

Monti Monaco is an Italian restaurant in Munich near Isartor and the Isar River. After several visits, I found it strongest when ordering carefully: the spaghettone with European sea bass and fried artichokes, pistachio tiramisu, sage tortellini, dorade, scampi, and parmigiana di melanzane were the most memorable dishes. The wine selection is a major advantage, and on good days the staff gave excellent recommendations. Still, the restaurant was not consistent. Prices are high, service varied from warm and professional to slow and inattentive, and some seats were uncomfortable. I paid around €20–30 for lighter lunch visits, but dinner with wine and main dishes often came to €70–100+.

Food Review by Dish

Spaghettone and Fish Pasta

The spaghettone with European sea bass and fried artichokes was the best dish I had at Monti Monaco. The pasta was cooked al dente, the fish tasted clean and delicate, and the artichokes added a pleasant nutty note. It did not need Parmesan because the seasoning was already right. With pistachio tiramisu and a glass of red wine, lunch came to about €50–60.

The salmon pasta was also a good lunch choice. The sauce was not too heavy, the salmon flavor stayed mild, and the portion was enough for lunch. A lighter pasta lunch came to about €10–20. The langoustine linguine was less impressive. It tasted closer to tomato-sauce pasta than a special seafood pasta.

Tortellini and Ravioli

The sage tortellini was excellent. The butter, herbs, and filling worked very well together, and this dish had the refined quality I expected from an upscale Italian restaurant. The ricotta ravioli was also good. The filling was mild, the sauce was savory, and it paired well with a glass of Champagne. For ravioli with a drink, I paid around €40–50 at dinner.

The tagliatelle with venison ragù was disappointing. The sauce lacked depth, and the pasta did not come together as well as the restaurant’s better dishes. For one pasta dish, I recommend the spaghettone or the sage tortellini instead.

Pizza and Vegetarian Dishes

The pizza had a thin, crispy crust and worked especially well at lunch. For pizza or a simple pasta dish, I paid around €10–20. The crust stayed crisp to the edge, and the toppings were not too heavy.

Among the vegetarian options, the parmigiana di melanzane was my favorite. The eggplant was soft, the tomato sauce had freshness, and the cheese gave the dish enough richness. It was satisfying enough as a main course. Vegetarian diners have solid options here.

Meat and Fish

The meat dishes were mixed. The T-bone steak was tender and flavorful, and it worked well with antipasti for dinner. Entrecôte and dessert were also strong on one visit. The beef fillet, however, was not cooked correctly on another visit: too charred outside and too raw inside for a medium order. At this price level, that matters.

The dorade with spinach was a safe choice. The fish was delicate, the spinach was not greasy, and it paired well with wine. The scampi was also excellent, with a fresh and intense seafood flavor. Tuna dishes are also worth ordering, especially for diners who like clean, high-quality fish.

Dessert and Coffee

The pistachio tiramisu is the dessert to order. On good days, the cream was soft, the sweetness was balanced, and the pistachio note was pleasant. On another visit, the pistachio flavor was weaker and mascarpone dominated more. Even then, I would order it again.

The chocolate mousse was also very good. It was not overly sweet and worked well after a full meal. Espresso was weaker than the food. On some visits, it had a burnt flavor. I would not choose Monti Monaco only for coffee.

If I Recommend Only One Dish

Spaghettone as the Best Choice

If I recommend only one dish at Monti Monaco, I recommend the spaghettone with European sea bass and fried artichokes. It shows the restaurant’s strengths best: well-cooked pasta, delicate fish, clear seasoning, and a polished finish.

Dessert Recommendation

For dessert, I recommend the pistachio tiramisu. The intensity was not identical every time, but it remains the dessert that fits this Italian meal best.

Prices and Payment

Lunch Prices

Lunch can be fairly manageable at Monti Monaco. For pizza or simple pasta, I paid around €10–20. With a drink and a little more food, lunch came to about €20–30. For a first visit, lunch is the safer choice than an expensive dinner menu.

Dinner Prices

Dinner is much more expensive. Pasta, a starter, and wine came to about €40–50. With a main dish and wine, I often paid around €70–80. With a menu, wine pairing, steak, or fish, the bill reached €90–100+. That can be acceptable when service is excellent, but it feels high when service or timing falls short.

Payment Method

I paid by card. Card payment worked without trouble, and different cards were accepted. The final step was not always smooth, though. On one visit, I had to wait too long for someone to bring the bill. A restaurant in this price range should handle payment as attentively as the beginning of the meal.

Waiting Time and Reservation

Reservation

At lunch or during quieter hours, I got in without waiting. For dinner, I recommend making a reservation. Visiting without one may work, but the seat can be less comfortable. For a quieter dinner, ask for an indoor table or a bench seat.

Food Waiting Time

Waiting time varied a lot. On good visits, starters and mains arrived at a comfortable pace. On weaker visits, I waited around 35 minutes for starters and more than an hour for the main course. On another visit, the main course took nearly 45 minutes. Delivery also had very long waiting times, so dining in is the better choice.

Staff Friendliness and Atmosphere

Good Service Days

On good days, the service was friendly and professional. Menu recommendations, wine advice, and personal attention made the meal much better. Some staff members were memorable for being warm and competent. Visits with children and business meals also worked well when the service was attentive.

Weak Service Days

On other visits, service was too slow or inattentive. Empty wine glasses were not noticed, bread had to be requested again, and at payment time nobody was around. One coffee stop also ended badly after I declined to tip. At these prices, that kind of reaction stands out for the wrong reason.

Indoor Seating

The interior is modern, warm, and stylish. The mix of restaurant, bistro, and small deli area gives the place character. Some chairs, however, were uncomfortable. I preferred bench seats or deeper indoor tables over seats in the middle of the room.

Outdoor Seating

Outdoor seating is convenient but not always pleasant. Being near the Isar is a benefit, but the road can be loud. For a longer meal, I prefer sitting inside.

Parking and Restroom

Parking

Parking is not a strength here. The location is central, and nearby parking is mostly paid street parking. A few spaces may be available, but I would not count on them. Arriving through Isartor is the easiest option.

Restroom

There is a restroom inside the restaurant. On one visit, the smell was very unpleasant and reduced the overall satisfaction. For an upscale restaurant, this area needs reliable attention.

Pros

Strong Dishes When Ordered Well

The main advantage is the quality of the best dishes. Spaghettone, sage tortellini, dorade, scampi, parmigiana di melanzane, and pistachio tiramisu are dishes I would order again.

Good Wine Selection

The wine selection is a clear strength. A good recommendation makes the fish, pasta, and meat dishes much better. Asking for wine advice is worth it here.

Lunch as a Better First Visit

Lunch is easier to recommend. Prices are lower, and pizza or pasta can offer better value than some dinner dishes.

Cons

Inconsistent Service

The biggest drawback is inconsistent service. At €70–100+ per person, service should be consistently attentive. That was not always the case.

Not Every Dish Works

Some dishes did not meet expectations. The venison ragù tagliatelle, langoustine linguine, and some meat dishes did not fully justify the price.

Loud Outdoor Area and Uncomfortable Seats

The outdoor area can be loud because of the road. Some indoor chairs were uncomfortable. It is worth asking for a better seat when reserving.

Satisfaction and Revisit Intention

Overall Satisfaction

Monti Monaco can be very good, but it is not reliable in every detail. The food was often strong, yet the service, waiting time, and price level did not always match. I would return for a relaxed lunch or carefully chosen pasta and fish dishes.

What I Would Order Next Time

Next time, I would order the spaghettone, sage tortellini, dorade, or pistachio tiramisu. I would ask for a wine recommendation and choose an indoor seat. For a first visit, I recommend starting with lunch and ordering one of the safer dishes.
