Review Summary

Gasthaus Isarthor was one of the more memorable Bavarian restaurants I visited near Isartor in Munich. After several visits, the strongest points were the old Munich pub atmosphere, Augustiner beer from the wooden barrel, generous Bavarian food, and a service experience that changed quite a lot depending on the day. The roast pork, Wiener schnitzel, duck, Käsespätzle, Kaiserschmarrn, and blueberry pancake were the dishes that stayed with me most. The beer is one of the main reasons to visit. At the same time, the restaurant is small, often packed, and loud. On good days the service was confident, fast, and friendly. On weaker days, orders took too long and the staff felt rushed. Payment was cash only, and parking was difficult. Overall, I recommend it for traditional Bavarian food and beer, but not for a quiet or polished restaurant experience.

Visit, Atmosphere, and Reservation

Old Munich Pub Character

Gasthaus Isarthor has the character of an old Bavarian inn rather than a modern restaurant. The dining room is small, dark, wooden, and tightly packed. During my visits, there were many local guests and regulars, which made the place feel less tourist-focused than many restaurants in central Munich.

This is not a quiet restaurant. In the evening it was loud, busy, and lively. Conversation was still possible, but the noise level was part of the experience. Anyone looking for a calm dinner may not enjoy it. Anyone looking for an old Bavarian pub with real energy will understand the appeal quickly.

Reservation and Waiting Time

A reservation is recommended. I managed to get a seat without a reservation on one visit, but that was luck. For three or more people, I would not visit without booking in advance. By dinner time, many tables were already reserved.

Waiting time varied. On one visit, I sat down quickly and the order was taken without delay. On another lunch visit, the restaurant was full and the service was much slower. It took a long time to place the order, and the food also took longer than expected. One dinner required around 30 minutes for the first dishes, and dessert can take even longer. This is a restaurant to visit with enough time.

Food Review and Prices

Roast Pork

The roast pork was the safest recommendation for me. The meat was tender, rich, and filling, and the potato dumpling with cabbage salad made it a proper Bavarian meal. With a beer, I paid around €20–30 per person. For central Munich, that was fair.

This dish fits the restaurant best. It is hearty, traditional, and satisfying. If I had to recommend only one dish here, I recommend the roast pork with an Augustiner Helles.

Wiener Schnitzel

The Wiener schnitzel came with fried potatoes and salad. The portion was good, the coating was crisp, and the plate worked well as a classic pub meal. With a drink, I paid around €20–30 per person.

The schnitzel was not equally strong every time. On one visit, the seasoning was a little heavy, and the Schnitzel Wiener Art felt less convincing for the price. I would order it again, but I would choose the roast pork first.

Duck and Meat Dishes

The duck had deep flavor and worked well with dumplings and cabbage. With sides and beer, the meal was closer to €30–40 per person. When it came out well, it was one of the better dishes here. On a weaker day, the meat can be drier.

The beef dishes were less consistent. Ochsenfetzen had good flavor on one visit, but on another day the meat was tougher than expected. For a safer order, I would stay with the roast pork.

Käsespätzle and Kaspressknödel

The Käsespätzle were the best vegetarian option I tried here. They were creamy, cheesy, and filling. At lunch, I paid around €10–20 per person for this kind of meal, and with a drink it moved closer to the €20 range. For vegetarians, this is my first recommendation at Gasthaus Isarthor.

The Kaspressknödel with salad were acceptable, but too expensive compared with other dishes. During lunch, the total came to around €20–30 per person, and for that price the plate did not feel as satisfying as the roast pork or schnitzel.

Fish and Weaker Dishes

The fried fish had a good coating and juicy flesh, but there were too many bones. Eating it became annoying. Even in a Bavarian inn, fish needs to be properly prepared if it is offered on the menu.

Bauerngröstl and Schinkennudeln were also weaker on one visit. The garlic was so strong that it dominated the whole plate. I would not order those again.

Desserts

Kaiserschmarrn, blueberry pancake, and apple strudel were among the more enjoyable parts of the meal. The Kaiserschmarrn was sweet, soft, and good for sharing. On one visit, it was listed on the menu but could not be ordered because of a kitchen equipment problem. That was disappointing.

The blueberry pancake took time, but it arrived warm and freshly made. I would order it again after the main course. With dessert, I usually paid around €30–40 per person.

Beer and Payment

Augustiner from the Wooden Barrel

The Augustiner beer from the wooden barrel was a major highlight. A fresh Helles fits this food perfectly. Beer alone is a strong reason to visit Gasthaus Isarthor.

Not every glass was poured perfectly. On some visits, the glass was not filled enough and had too much foam. That should be better in an Augustiner inn. Still, the beer itself tasted very good.

Cash Only

Payment was cash only. Card payment was not available. This is important to know before visiting. I now bring cash whenever I go to this restaurant.

Service, Restroom, and Comfort

Staff Friendliness

Service was the biggest variable. On one evening, the waitress handled the full dining room with impressive confidence, speed, and friendliness. That visit was excellent from a service point of view.

On other days, the staff were rushed, short in tone, and slower. When the restaurant was full, too few staff members were covering too many tables. The pressure was clear, and it affected the meal.

Restroom

The restroom was available and clean during my visit. The only issue was the narrow path through the dining room when the restaurant was full. The tables are close together, so moving around is not especially comfortable.

Parking and Seating

Parking

Parking is difficult. The restaurant does not have its own parking area. There are paid street parking spots and paid garages nearby, but finding an available space is not easy. Public transport is the better choice.

Seating

The seating is tight, and sharing a larger table with other guests can happen. That is normal in an old Bavarian inn, but it is not for everyone. Groups should reserve. For beer, hearty food, and old Munich atmosphere, the seating style fits the place well.

Pros and Cons

Pros

The biggest strengths are the authentic old Munich atmosphere, Augustiner beer from the wooden barrel, and several strong Bavarian classics. Roast pork, duck, Käsespätzle, and desserts were all worth ordering. The prices are generally fair for the central location. The restaurant has character and does not feel like a generic tourist spot.

Cons

The drawbacks are also clear. It is cash only, parking is difficult, the room is cramped, and the restaurant gets loud. Service can be friendly and efficient, but it can also be slow and unfriendly. Some dishes are inconsistent. The fish had too many bones, some plates had too much garlic or salt, and some beers were not filled properly.

Satisfaction and Return Visit

Satisfaction

My overall satisfaction was good, but with clear limits. Gasthaus Isarthor works best when visiting for beer, roast pork, and old Bavarian pub atmosphere. It does not work as well for people expecting quiet dining, modern comfort, or perfectly consistent service.

Would I Visit Again?

I would visit again. I would go early, reserve a table, and bring cash. I would order roast pork, Augustiner Helles, and Kaiserschmarrn or blueberry pancake if dessert is available. For that exact kind of meal, Gasthaus Isarthor is worth returning to.

Location Description

Gasthaus Isarthor is easy to find near Isartor and Isartorplatz. From the Isartor S-Bahn station, walk toward the Isartor city gate and continue in the direction of the Fortuna Brunnen. Nearby reference points include TAKLAMAKAN Munich, ChiaChia’s Cafe am Isartorplatz, and Restaurant Vegelangelo. Using Isartorplatz and Tal as reference points makes the restaurant easy to reach.
