Scandic München Macherei Stay Summary
Room, breakfast, location, and overall value
Scandic München Macherei is not right in Munich Old Town, but it works very well if you are happy to use the tram. The hotel is modern, clean, quiet, and practical for both business trips and short city breaks. The beds are one of the strongest points, and the breakfast is better than a basic hotel buffet. I had bread, croissants, eggs, cheese, ham, fruit, yogurt, hot dishes, coffee, waffles, and freshly pressed juice. The weaker points are the small standard rooms, limited storage, housekeeping only on request, and expensive parking. Underground parking costs 30 euros per day. Early check-in cost 20 euros, and late check-out until 3 p.m. cost 25 euros. Payment is card-based because the hotel is cashless. I would stay again for a short Munich trip, especially without a car.
Scandic München Macherei Check-in and Check-out
Arrival and front desk experience
Check-in was usually quick and easy. The front desk checked the reservation and ID without unnecessary waiting, and English communication was smooth. Even when arriving very late at night, the welcome was friendly. When I arrived about one hour before the regular check-in time, the hotel charged 20 euros for early check-in. That is clear enough, but it is worth knowing in advance. The front desk often helped with room requests, quiet rooms, and public transport questions. The weaker point was information. Housekeeping rules, towel replacement, breakfast booking, and parking costs were not always explained clearly at the start, so I recommend asking about these details during check-in.
Departure and extra charges
Check-out was very fast. On one stay it took less than a minute because I only had to return the key card and confirm the bill. Still, the bill is worth checking because extra charges can add up. Underground parking was 30 euros per day, early check-in was 20 euros, and late check-out until 3 p.m. was 25 euros. The actual room rate changes by date and room type, so I am only listing the charges I can state exactly. I paid by card, and cash payment was not available.
Scandic München Macherei Room Types
Standard double and twin rooms
The standard double room is fine for one or two nights, but it is small. With two large suitcases, the room gets tight quickly. The room had a comfortable bed, small desk, bedside sockets, safe, iron, ironing board, hair dryer, kettle, and a tiny fridge. The fridge is only useful for a few bottles of water. There was no proper wardrobe, just hanging space, which is okay for a short stay but inconvenient for several nights. The twin room also felt compact, and the single bed was narrow. The room design is modern and minimal. Instant coffee and tea were provided, but not every room had a proper coffee machine.
Superior rooms and higher floors
The superior room was much more comfortable. With around 28 m², it had enough space for luggage and daily use. Higher-floor rooms are worth considering because the view over Munich can be very good. The bed was large and comfortable, the sheets were soft, and the pillows were not too high. The mattress was usually very comfortable, although one stay felt slightly too soft. Blackout blinds worked well, and the air conditioning kept the room at a good temperature. The room smelled clean, and I did not have any unpleasant odor issues.
Family rooms and accessible rooms
The family room is the better choice when traveling with children. It gives much more space than a standard room, and higher floors can come with a great view. I would not choose a small standard room for four people with luggage. The family rooms were modern, clean, and practical. The accessible room had a larger bathroom and more open floor space, but storage around the sink and bathroom was still limited. For longer stays, I would book a larger room category from the start.
Scandic München Macherei Cleanliness and Bed Quality
Housekeeping and towels
The rooms were generally clean and well maintained. The bathroom, floor, desk, and bed area were usually in good condition. However, housekeeping is not automatic every day. Room cleaning and fresh towels must be requested. If this is not explained at check-in, it can be frustrating to return to a room that has not been cleaned. Once housekeeping came, the work was good. For a four-star hotel, the policy itself is not the main issue; the communication needs to be clearer.
Bed, bedding, and sleep quality
The bed is one of the best reasons to book this hotel. I slept well on most stays. The bedding was soft, the duvet was not too heavy, and the pillows had a comfortable height. The mattress may be too soft for guests who prefer a firm bed, but overall it was comfortable. The room could be made very dark at night, and the temperature was easy to manage. Bedside sockets were also convenient, especially on business stays.
Scandic München Macherei Bathroom Review
Shower, water pressure, and hot water
The bathroom was modern and clean. The shower was spacious in many rooms, and hot water came quickly. Water pressure was good on most stays, but not in every room. On one stay, the pressure was weaker and the temperature changed during the shower. The biggest issue was the shower glass in some rooms. It did not seal properly, so water ran into the toilet area and left the floor wet. That is annoying in a new hotel and needs a better solution.
Sink, towels, and amenities
The towels were clean and smelled fresh. The hair dryer was strong and better than many hotel dryers. The main weakness was the lack of bathroom storage. With two people, toothbrushes, cosmetics, and toiletries quickly filled the small sink area. Slippers were not automatically placed in the room and had to be requested from reception. Tissues and extra cosmetic items were also missing. The basics are covered, but the amenities feel light for a four-star hotel.
Scandic München Macherei Noise and Room Temperature
Street noise and hallway noise
The hotel is near a larger road, but the room was quiet with the window closed. The tram did not disturb my sleep. Higher-floor rooms and rooms away from busy areas were especially quiet. Even a room near the elevator was calmer than expected. Hallway voices could be heard at times when guests returned late, but I did not have ongoing noise from neighboring rooms.
Air conditioning, heating, and blackout blinds
The air conditioning worked well and cooled the room properly. Heating was also fine in colder weather. Smaller rooms change temperature quickly, so I adjust the system as soon as I enter. The blackout blinds were very good and kept the room dark in the morning. Overall, the room climate was reliable and comfortable.
Scandic München Macherei Breakfast Review
Food selection and quality
Breakfast is a major strength of Scandic München Macherei. The buffet included bread, rolls, croissants, eggs, scrambled eggs, cheese, ham, fruit, yogurt, hot dishes, coffee, and tea. The fresh juice station was a highlight because I could press juice myself. Waffles were also available, which makes the hotel a good choice for families. On some stays there were vegan and gluten-free options as well. Food was refilled regularly, and tables were usually cleared quickly. The breakfast area can get busy around 9 a.m., so it is better to go earlier for a calmer meal.
Breakfast downsides
Breakfast was good, but not perfect every time. Some items needed better labels, and the fruit selection could have been wider. Some rolls were below the level I expected from this hotel. When the hotel was busy, the breakfast team seemed short-staffed. The exact breakfast price should be confirmed at check-in because booking it earlier can be cheaper, and that information was not always given early enough.
Scandic München Macherei Staff and Service
Front desk service
The front desk was usually friendly and helpful. Staff answered questions about trams, tickets, parking, and the neighborhood patiently. Requests for adapters, room preferences, and small extras were handled well. Some staff members made the stay much better because they were genuinely attentive. The weak point was not attitude, but missing information. Housekeeping, cashless payment, breakfast booking, and parking should be explained more clearly at arrival.
Breakfast staff, housekeeping, and bar
The breakfast staff usually worked quickly, refilled food, and cleared tables. Family guests were treated well, and children were given small helpful extras on some stays. Housekeeping did a good job when requested. The bar was more mixed. On some evenings the lounge was pleasant and the service was good. On other evenings, service was slow or not very warm. Closing earlier than the advertised time leaves a poor impression.
Scandic München Macherei Facilities and Payment
Lounge, bar, gym, and small shop
The lounge is useful when the room feels small or when you need a place to work. There are sofas, a modern bar, and enough seating for laptop use. The gym is fine for a short workout but can feel crowded in the morning. The small lobby shop is handy for drinks, snacks, and forgotten basics. The overall hotel style is modern and Nordic without feeling cold.
Card-only payment
Scandic München Macherei is a cashless hotel. I paid by card, and cash was not accepted. That is easy if you normally use a card, but guests who prefer cash should know this before arrival. Parking, early check-in, late check-out, and bar charges are also handled by card. Payment itself was simple, but the final bill should be checked carefully.
Scandic München Macherei Parking
Underground parking and cost
Parking is the biggest drawback. There is a bright, modern underground garage below the building with direct hotel access. It is convenient and feels safe, especially with luggage. The problem is the price: 30 euros per day. If you charge an electric car, the cost can become even higher. For one night with heavy bags, the garage may be worth it. For several nights, it becomes expensive quickly.
Better options without a car
There is a short stop area near the hotel for unloading luggage. For longer parking, cheaper options around Innsbrucker Ring are worth checking. One option was around 2 euros for 24 hours, but the walk back to the hotel was about 20 minutes. For getting around Munich, I recommend using the tram from this hotel rather than driving. It saves money and avoids city traffic.
Scandic München Macherei Pros and Cons
What worked well
The best parts are the clean rooms, comfortable beds, strong breakfast, and easy tram access. Aldi, Kaufland, and dm nearby are very useful for water, snacks, and travel items. The hotel works well for business trips, family weekends, and short Munich stays. The lounge is comfortable, the design is modern, and public transport is easy to use.
What did not work well
The downsides are the small standard rooms, lack of wardrobe, limited bathroom storage, and housekeeping on request. Parking costs 30 euros per day, which is expensive. In some rooms, shower water leaked into the toilet area. Bar service was not always as good as the reception team. Guests who want daily room cleaning, lots of storage, and a hotel in the middle of Old Town should choose somewhere else.
Scandic München Macherei Overall Rating
Would I stay again?
I would stay at Scandic München Macherei again, but I would choose the room carefully. For a weekend, business trip, or Munich stay based around public transport, it is a good hotel. For longer stays or more luggage, I recommend a superior or family room. The standard room is best for short stays. If arriving by car, the 30-euro daily parking fee needs to be part of the budget. Without a car, the hotel gives you a clean, modern room, good breakfast, and comfortable beds.
Scandic München Macherei Location
Ostbahnhof, Marienplatz, and nearby shops
Scandic München Macherei is in Berg am Laim in eastern Munich. From the tram stop near the hotel, Marienplatz and the Old Town are reachable in about 20 minutes. Ostbahnhof is around 20 minutes away on foot, or quicker by public transport. Josephsburg U-Bahn station is also within walking distance. Aldi, Kaufland, dm, and other shops are close to the hotel, so buying water, snacks, and toiletries is easy. The hotel is also practical for events at TonHalle or Technikum. It is not the right choice for travelers who want to sleep directly in Old Town, but it is a strong choice for a quieter stay with easy access to central Munich.
