Review Summary
SAM Sushi and Meat is a Munich Maxvorstadt restaurant serving sushi, sashimi, ramen, rice bowls, Japanese tapas, desserts, cocktails, and meat dishes. After several visits, my opinion is clear: sushi, sashimi, bowls, dumplings, and mochi are the strongest parts of the restaurant, while ramen, some meat dishes, and the All You Can Eat rules are less convincing. The All You Can Eat cost €42 per person, with drinks charged separately. Lunch usually came to around €10–20 per person, while dinner ranged from €20–50 per person depending on the order. Food often arrived quickly, but service was inconsistent, and drinks once took around 35 minutes during a busy visit. I would return for sushi and bowls, but I would not choose this restaurant just for ramen.
Prices and Ordering
All You Can Eat Price
The All You Can Eat cost €42 per person. Drinks were not included. With drinks, my dinner bill easily reached around €50–60 per person. Orders were placed through a tablet, and each person could order up to 5 items every 10 minutes.
This system works well when the goal is to try different sushi, sashimi, and small plates. It is not a classic buffet. Not every item was included, and some higher-value dishes were excluded. There was also a €7 extra charge warning for unfinished food. That rule makes sense from a waste perspective, but it also adds pressure during the meal.
Lunch Prices
Lunch was better value. A lunch menu with soup and sushi came to around €10–20 per person. A Superfood Rice Bowl with a vegan or chicken option cost €10.90 and included a small soup.
Ramen with extra tempura came to around €20. That is not unusual for Munich, but at that price, the ramen has to compete with specialized ramen restaurants. At SAM Sushi and Meat, bowls and sushi are better lunch choices.
Dinner Prices
For dinner, I usually paid around €20–30 or €30–40 per person. With sushi, Japanese tapas, ramen, and drinks, the bill reached €40–50 per person. A Sushi and Friends Plate for two cost €72, and with soup and drinks the total can go above €100.
The restaurant is not cheap. Because of that, it is better to order carefully and focus on the stronger dishes instead of adding too many random items.

Sushi and Sashimi
Sushi and sashimi are the best reasons to visit SAM Sushi and Meat. Nigiri and sashimi had good fish quality during my better visits. Salmon and tuna were the safest choices. The fact that sashimi is included in the All You Can Eat option is a real advantage.
Inside-Out Rolls, truffle sushi, asparagus sushi, and the Mango Veggie Roll were also good. The Mango Veggie Roll had large pieces with cream cheese, mango, avocado, and a strong peanut sauce. Rolls with eel, avocado, and shrimp also worked well as a main order.
Quality was not perfect every time. Some crunchy rolls were dry and not crunchy enough. Tempura inside sushi was soft during one visit. Salmon was not available later in the evening during one All You Can Eat visit, which was disappointing at €42 per person. If I had to recommend just one thing, I would recommend a sushi menu with sashimi.
Bowls
The bowls were especially good at lunch. The Avocado Salad Bowl was fresh, filling, and well combined. The Salmon Tuna Salad Bowl included enough fish and worked as a proper meal rather than a small salad.
The Superfood Rice Bowl was good value at €10.90 with soup included. It is one of the better choices for a solo lunch or a lighter meal for two people.
Ramen
Ramen was the weakest major category for me. On one visit, the broth was rich and the pork was juicy. On another visit, the broth was bland or too salty. The egg was overcooked instead of soft in the center, and the toppings were not always strong enough.
I paid around €20 for ramen with extra tempura. For that price, there are better ramen-focused places in Munich. At SAM Sushi and Meat, ramen is a side option, not the main reason to go.
Japanese Tapas and Meat
Chicken Dumplings were a strong choice. The portion came with 5 pieces, good seasoning, and a matching sauce. Takoyaki was also a good side dish. Pork belly was soft and well seasoned. Crispy Chicken and crispy duck were decent.
Some meat dishes were disappointing. Certain All You Can Eat meat items were dry and underseasoned. Chicken Teriyaki Bowl was weak. Satay skewers and potato salad are not dishes I would order again.
Dessert and Drinks
Mochi was the best dessert. The different flavors were a good ending after sushi and tapas. Non-alcoholic drinks with ginger, lychee, and mint also paired well with the food. Cocktails were enjoyable too.
The water situation was a negative point. Bottled water was expensive, and free tap water was not offered during one visit. With a higher dinner bill, that detail matters.
Waiting Time and Service
Seating and Ordering
During quieter hours, I got a table without waiting. Lunch and early dinner were usually easy. For weekends or All You Can Eat, I recommend making a reservation.
Food usually came quickly after ordering. Tablet orders were sent directly, and sushi, tapas, and warm dishes arrived one after another. On busy days, however, service slowed down. Drinks once took about 35 minutes, and one lunch visit took around 40 minutes from sitting down to receiving the food.
Staff
Service was inconsistent. Some staff members were friendly, attentive, and quick. On other visits, service was slow, distant, or unfriendly. The payment process once felt uncomfortable because of tipping pressure. The handling of tap water was also not guest-friendly.
The food can make the visit worthwhile, but the service can bring the overall experience down. This is the restaurant’s biggest weakness.
Interior and Seating
Indoor Seating
The interior is modern, but not cozy. The Japanese newspaper-style walls are distinctive, but the room feels more like a young urban fusion spot than a quiet Japanese restaurant.
The central benches do not have backrests. They are fine for a quick meal, but uncomfortable for a long dinner. Seats along the side are better.
Noise Level
Noise depends on the time. On quiet evenings, conversation is easy. During busier dinner hours, music and guest noise make the room loud. For a date or a longer conversation, an earlier visit is better.
Outdoor Seating
There is outdoor seating. It is nice in good weather, but some tables are close to the street. Those tables are not ideal for guests who are sensitive to noise or dust.
Payment and Facilities
Payment Method
Card and cash payments were both possible. Card payment worked without trouble. Since the bill can rise quickly with small plates and drinks, it is worth checking the receipt before paying.
Parking
Parking is difficult. There are paid street parking spaces and paid parking options nearby, but open spaces are not reliable. Public transport or walking is the better choice.
Restroom
There is a restroom. It is located downstairs and reached by a steep staircase. That is a clear disadvantage for guests with limited mobility.
Pros and Cons
Pros
The biggest pros are sushi, sashimi, bowls, dumplings, and the vegetarian selection. Lunch offers better value than dinner. Tablet ordering is convenient for All You Can Eat when there is enough time. Portion sizes are also generous for many bowls and warm dishes.
It is a good place for sharing sushi and small plates with friends, as long as the group is not in a hurry.
Cons
The biggest cons are inconsistent service, All You Can Eat restrictions, uneven ramen quality, uncomfortable benches, noise, and difficult parking. Prices are high enough that weaker dishes stand out immediately.
Satisfaction and Revisit Intention
Personal Rating
My personal rating is 3.7 out of 5. Sushi, sashimi, and bowls would score higher. Ramen, some meat dishes, service inconsistency, and the All You Can Eat rules lower the final rating.
SAM Sushi and Meat can be a very good meal if the right dishes are ordered. It can also feel overpriced if the order focuses on weaker items.
Would I Return?
I would return, but I would order more carefully. For lunch, I would choose a bowl or a sushi menu. For dinner, I would order sushi with sashimi, Chicken Dumplings, and mochi. I would only choose the All You Can Eat if I had enough time and wanted sushi to be the main focus.
If I had to recommend one thing, I recommend a sushi menu with sashimi. For a lighter meal, I recommend the Avocado Salad Bowl or the Salmon Tuna Salad Bowl.
Location Description
From the Pinakotheken
SAM Sushi and Meat is in Munich Maxvorstadt near the Pinakotheken. From Pinakothek der Moderne or Neue Pinakothek, walk toward Türkenstraße and continue toward Amalienstraße. It is a convenient restaurant after a museum visit.
By Subway
From Universität subway station, walk toward Schellingstraße and then continue toward Amalienstraße. From Odeonsplatz, the walk through Hofgarten and up toward Maxvorstadt is also easy. The surrounding area has many cafés, bars, and restaurants, so it works well before or after a walk in the neighborhood.
