Review Summary

Overall impression after several visits

Paulaner am Nockherberg was one of the stronger Bavarian beer hall restaurants I visited in Munich Au-Haidhausen. It combined a large modern interior, traditional beer hall energy, a spacious beer garden, and solid Bavarian food. The best parts were the beer, Kaiserschmarrn, Schweinsbraten, and Schnitzel. The prices were high, and I usually paid around €30–40 per person for a proper meal with beer.

Best fit and weak points

This restaurant is a good choice for anyone who wants a Munich beer hall experience with a polished setting, fresh beer, and classic Bavarian dishes. It is not the cheapest place for a casual meal. Some dishes justified the price, while others did not. The vegan Jackfruitgulasch cost €24, but it was too sweet, not filling enough, and not something I order again. During busy hours, service also became slower.

Food and Prices

Paulaner beer and drinks

The beer was the safest order on every visit. I paid €6.20 for a Weißbier, and a 0.5L beer was around €5.90. That is expensive for beer, but the draft beer had a much better taste than bottled or canned beer. It paired very well with the heavier Bavarian dishes. For trying several options, the beer tasting board is the better choice.

Schnitzel and salad

The Schnitzel was one of the better main dishes. Wiener Schnitzel was around €32, and Kalbsschnitzel was around €34. The price was high, but the coating was crisp and the meat was thin and easy to eat. With potato salad, the dish felt lighter and more balanced. For one main dish recommendation, I recommend Schnitzel with salad.

Schweinsbraten and Pork Knuckle

The Schweinsbraten worked well because of the tender meat and rich sauce. It matched the dumplings well and delivered the kind of Bavarian meal I wanted here. I paid around €20 for Schweinsbraten, which was more reasonable than many other dishes on the menu. The Pork Knuckle was also satisfying, especially because of the crispy outside. However, some meat dishes were not available on certain visits, and that was disappointing.

Kaiserschmarrn

Kaiserschmarrn was the best dish I had here. It was lightly caramelized on the outside, soft inside, and not overly sweet. It was an excellent dessert after a heavy meal. If I had to recommend only one thing at Paulaner am Nockherberg, I recommend Kaiserschmarrn. It gave me more satisfaction than many main dishes.

Brotzeitbrettl and small dishes

The Brotzeitbrettl was a strong beer garden choice. Cheese, sausage, bread, and cold meats worked well with the beer. The portion was enough to share between two people. For a relaxed beer-focused visit, I recommend ordering Brotzeitbrettl instead of choosing only heavy main dishes.

Vegetarian and vegan dishes

Vegetarian dishes were clearly marked, and the selection was better than in many traditional beer halls. Some vegetarian plates were well presented and tasted good. The vegan Jackfruitgulasch was the weak point. I paid €24 for it, but it was too sweet, the tomato sauce was too strong, and the portion was not enough. The mashed potatoes were good, but they did not save the dish.

Total cost

For two people without dessert, I paid around €65. A lunch visit usually came to about €20–30 per person, while dinner was closer to €30–40 per person. With Schnitzel, beer, and dessert, it can easily reach €40–50 per person. The restaurant is expensive, but it is still worth visiting once for a Munich beer hall meal.

Visit Details

Waiting time

At lunch, I sometimes entered without waiting, and the food arrived within about 10–15 minutes. On one visit around 3:30 p.m., there were seats without a reservation, but I had to leave before 5 p.m. because of dinner reservations. On weekends and busy evenings, I allowed 10–30 minutes for ordering and food. In the self-service beer garden area, food lines became longer, and Kaiserschmarrn took about 20 minutes.

Payment

I paid in cash. Since the restaurant is expensive, bringing enough cash is a good idea. Two main dishes with beer can easily cost more than €60. For group meals, the total rises quickly.

Parking

Parking depended heavily on the day and time. Paid street parking was available nearby, but finding a free spot was not always easy. The paid underground garage was the safer option, especially on weekends or event days. Arriving by car is easier when using the garage instead of relying on street parking.

Restroom

Restrooms were available and very clean. Even though the restaurant was large and busy, the facilities were well maintained. That was a clear advantage for a place of this size.

Service and Atmosphere

Staff

The staff was usually friendly, quick, and attentive. English menus were available, which made ordering easier. When the weather changed, moving from outside to inside was handled well. On very busy visits, however, getting a server’s attention took longer. A few service moments were also less friendly than the usual standard.

Indoor dining area

The indoor area was large, stylish, and comfortable. It had a Bavarian foundation but felt more modern than many classic beer halls. It worked well for groups, family meals, and business dinners. During busy hours, it became loud, and some tables were closer together than I liked.

Beer garden

The beer garden was one of the main reasons to visit. On a good weather day, beer, Brotzeit, and the large outdoor area made a strong combination. Some areas used self-service, which created waiting time when the place was crowded. For a more comfortable meal with table service, the indoor dining area or the serviced terrace is better.

Pros and Cons

Pros

The strongest points were the beer, Kaiserschmarrn, large seating area, and Bavarian atmosphere. Schweinsbraten, Schnitzel, and Brotzeitbrettl were reliable orders. Staff were usually friendly, and many dishes arrived quickly. It is a good restaurant for Munich visitors, groups, and anyone who wants a polished beer hall experience.

Cons

The biggest drawback was the price. A Weißbier at €6.20, Wiener Schnitzel at €32, and Kalbsschnitzel at €34 are premium prices. Not every dish matched that level. The vegan Jackfruitgulasch was too sweet and too small, and the €30 Böfflamott had too much fat and tendon with only four Schupfnudeln. During busy hours, service slowed down, and reservation time slots could limit the visit.

Satisfaction and Revisit

Satisfaction

My overall satisfaction was high. Paulaner am Nockherberg is not a cheap Wirtshaus. It is a place for beer, atmosphere, and solid Bavarian cooking. Choosing the stronger dishes makes the visit worthwhile. For pure value, there are cheaper options in Munich.

Revisit

I would visit again. Next time, I order beer, Schweinsbraten, Schnitzel, and Kaiserschmarrn. I choose vegan dishes and expensive specialty meat dishes more carefully. For weekend dinner, I make a reservation. For a calmer meal, I go at lunch.

Location Guide

From the Deutsches Museum

From the Deutsches Museum, cross the Isar toward Au-Haidhausen and continue up toward Nockherberg. The walk along the Isar works well before or after the meal. The restaurant is large and easy to identify once you reach the area.

From Gasteig

From Gasteig, walk south into Au-Haidhausen. Nearby places such as Ayinger in der Au and Wirtshaus Hohenwart make this area easy to recognize as a dining district. Paulaner am Nockherberg is one of the larger venues in the area, so finding it is not difficult.
