MIO by AMANO Munich Review

MIO by AMANO is a Munich hotel that mainly wins because of its location. It sits in the old town between Sendlinger Tor and Marienplatz, right on a pedestrian shopping street with restaurants, cafés, shops, and public transport nearby. Most major sights are easy to reach on foot. The rooms are modern and usually very clean, but the smaller room categories are genuinely small. The bed was mostly comfortable, the bedding was clean, and the pillows were very soft. Air conditioning was weak during hot weather. Bathrooms were clean, but rooms with bathtub showers had a high ledge and slippery floors after showering. Breakfast cost 19.80 euros per person and was good, with bread, coffee, eggs, cheese, ham, fruit, yogurt, healthy options, and vegan choices. There is no hotel parking on site. I paid 35 euros per night in a nearby garage once, and 22 euros for 24 hours with a hotel confirmation on another stay. During a major event period, the room rate was 425 euros per night. At that price, the room size and service did not fully match the cost. The location, cleanliness, breakfast, and design are the main strengths. Small rooms, self check-in, parking, mixed service, weak cooling, and possible bar noise are the main drawbacks.

MIO by AMANO Room Types and Prices

Cozy Room

The Cozy room works best for one person with small luggage. It had a comfortable bed, a safe, hooks, small shelves, and outlets by the bed. For a short stay, it was enough. With two people and large suitcases, it became tight very quickly. Once the suitcases were open on the floor, walking around the bed was difficult. Not every room had a proper chair or a full desk. This room type is fine if you plan to spend most of the day outside and only return to sleep. It is not ideal for longer stays or heavy luggage.

Comfy Room

The Comfy room was clean and modern, but not especially spacious. The bed took up most of the room, and luggage made the room feel cramped. It worked for a short city break, but it was not great for working or spending more time in the room. In one room with a bathtub shower, the bathtub ledge was high and awkward. After showering, the floor became slippery, and there was no bathmat. I would not recommend that bathroom setup for older travelers or anyone with mobility issues.

Roomy Room

The Roomy room was the best option. A room with a walk-in shower was much more comfortable, especially in the bathroom. There was more space for luggage and more room to move around the bed. Still, it was not a large room by North American hotel standards. A Roomy King room could still feel compact depending on the layout. In one room, a constant humming noise from the ceiling made sleep harder. Even so, if I book this hotel again, I would choose a Roomy room first.

Price and Payment

Prices changed a lot depending on the date. During a major event period in Munich, I paid 425 euros per night. Breakfast was not included and cost 19.80 euros per person. I booked online and paid by card at the hotel. At check-out, I checked the bill for breakfast, bar charges, and extras. An additional bottle of water was charged at 5 euros once. A gin and tonic at the bar cost 12 euros. During an event, small drinks cost at least 15 euros. At 425 euros per night, the hotel only makes sense if the central location matters more than room size.

MIO by AMANO Check-in and Check-out

Self Check-in

MIO by AMANO uses self check-in kiosks. Reservation details, passport information, and room key setup are handled through the machine. When I arrived rested, it was quick. After a long flight, it felt tiring. A staff member sometimes helped, but it was not the same as a classic front desk check-in with a short explanation of breakfast, the bar, and hotel facilities. First-time guests should ask clearly about breakfast hours, elevator access, room key use, and the bar.

Early Check-in and Waiting Time

When the room was ready, early check-in at 10 a.m. was possible. That was excellent. On other stays, the room was not ready until after 3 p.m. That is the official check-in time, but after long travel it still felt tiring. Luggage storage was available. Because the hotel is so central, it was easy to wait in a nearby café or shop. Staff communication varied from very friendly to rather brief.

Check-out

Check-out was usually fast. I returned the key card, checked the bill, and left. I recommend checking all extra charges before leaving. Breakfast, water, and bar expenses can be added separately. One check-out experience was unpleasant when I asked about an open bar charge. On other stays, staff were helpful, gave advice, and even helped with an umbrella on a rainy day. Service at MIO by AMANO was not always consistent.

MIO by AMANO Cleanliness and Bed Comfort

Room Cleanliness

The rooms were mostly very clean. Bedding, bathroom, sink, mirror, and surfaces were usually well maintained. The room also smelled clean when I entered. There were exceptions. Once, the floor had dust and hair. During another multi-night stay, the room was not properly cleaned. Housekeeping also entered once without knocking. Since then, I always use the extra door lock when staying here.

Bed and Pillows

The bed was mostly comfortable. The mattress was on the firm side, and the bedding was clean. After long days walking around Munich, it was easy to sleep when the room was quiet. The pillows were very soft. Anyone who prefers firm or high pillows should ask reception for an extra pillow. In one room, the bed made noise when turning over. Overall, the bed is good, but not perfect for every sleeper.

Room Facilities

The room facilities were functional. There were bedside outlets, a safe, a hairdryer, hooks, and small shelves. Large wardrobes were missing. Some rooms had no fridge, no kettle, and no in-room coffee or tea facilities. Cups or a kettle had to be requested from reception. Rooms with a Nespresso machine were much more convenient. The setup works for light luggage, but it feels limited during longer stays.

Air Conditioning and Windows

Air conditioning was weak on hot days. When the temperature was close to 30°C, the room became warm and stuffy, and sleep was affected. During mild weather, it was fine. In some rooms, window or shade use was limited. Ventilation or ceiling noise also happened in some rooms. For a summer stay, I recommend asking at check-in for a well-cooled and quiet room.

MIO by AMANO Bathroom and Amenities

Shower and Water Pressure

The bathrooms were clean, but the experience depended on the room. Rooms with walk-in showers were the most comfortable. The entry was easy, the space was better, and showering was more convenient. In other rooms, water pressure was weak, and the temperature changed from very hot to cold during the shower. Bathtub showers were the least comfortable option. The ledge was high, and without a bathmat the floor became slippery.

Sink and Toilet

The toilet was clean and worked well. The sink area had limited counter space. With several toiletries, it became crowded quickly. In small bathrooms, two people could not get ready comfortably at the same time. After showering, some bathrooms stayed humid for a while. If bathroom comfort matters, request a room with a walk-in shower.

Towels and Amenities

Towels were clean and enough for normal use. The bathroom had shampoo, body wash, and soap. Conditioner was not provided. The products worked for a short stay, but the scent and feel were not impressive. I recommend bringing personal toiletries. Positive details included the safe, hairdryer, good outlets, and occasional Nespresso machine. The missing fridge in some rooms was a downside, especially in summer.

MIO by AMANO Noise and Bar

Room Noise

Courtyard-facing rooms and upper-floor rooms were quiet. Since the hotel is on a pedestrian street, there is almost no direct car noise. Hallway doors could be heard sometimes, but not constantly. Street-facing rooms can pick up voices and activity from the pedestrian area. On weekends, the lobby and elevator areas can be busier because many people visit the bar.

Bar and Events

The bar is stylish and lively in the evening. It is a nice place for a drink, and there is sometimes DJ music on weekends. During events, it became loud. In poorly located rooms, the music was easy to hear and sometimes felt closer to a club than a hotel bar. Anyone who wants to sleep early should request a courtyard-facing room away from the bar.

MIO by AMANO Breakfast

Price and Food

Breakfast cost 19.80 euros per person. It was not automatically included in the room rate. The selection was good: bread, rolls, cheese, ham, fruit, yogurt, coffee, milk alternatives, healthy dishes, and warm egg dishes. Omelets and shakshuka were especially good. For this hotel category, the breakfast was strong.

Breakfast Area and Service

The breakfast area was busy in the morning but well managed. Food was replenished, coffee was good, and staff were usually attentive. There were also days when service felt cooler, but breakfast was still one of the better parts of the stay. If you only need a quick coffee and pastry, there are many cafés around the hotel.

MIO by AMANO Parking and Arrival

No Direct Car Access

The hotel is on a pedestrian-only street. You cannot drive directly to the entrance. With heavy luggage, rain, or shopping bags, this is inconvenient. Taxis and Ubers can only stop on a nearby side street, and then you have to walk. It is better to know this before arrival.

Nearby Garages

I used nearby parking garages. Once, I paid 35 euros per night. On another stay, I paid 22 euros for 24 hours with hotel confirmation. The Stachus garage is about a 10-minute walk away. Anyone driving into Munich should plan for parking costs and the walk with luggage. The hotel is much easier to use with U-Bahn, tram, S-Bahn, and walking.

MIO by AMANO Service

Front Desk

Front desk service varied. Some staff members were very friendly, helped with early check-in, gave restaurant tips, and handled problems well. Others felt cold or not especially interested. During self check-in, I sometimes wanted more support. The hotel has good staff, but the service level was not always the same.

Breakfast Staff and Housekeeping

Breakfast service was mostly good. Orders were taken, coffee arrived without a long wait, and food was refilled. Housekeeping was more mixed. Many rooms were very clean, but there were also late or missed cleanings. Entering without knocking was a clear minus.

Bar Service

The bar has good cocktails and a stylish design. When it was busy, service became slow. During events, seating guidance was not clear enough. The bar works well for guests who want a drink in the evening. It is less ideal for guests who want a quiet hotel lounge.

MIO by AMANO Pros and Cons

Pros

The location is the biggest advantage. Marienplatz, Sendlinger Tor, Viktualienmarkt, Asamkirche, Frauenkirche, shops, and restaurants are all walkable. The hotel is modern, mostly clean, and good for a short Munich stay. Breakfast is varied. Courtyard-facing rooms are quiet, and the beds are mostly comfortable.

Cons

The rooms are small, especially in the lower categories. Parking is expensive and not available directly at the hotel. Self check-in feels impersonal. Air conditioning was weak in summer. Some bathrooms are slippery or have a high bathtub ledge. Service quality varies. Bar and event noise can be a problem. Breakfast, water, coffee, and parking can add extra costs.

Would I Stay Again?

Yes, but only with the right setup. I would book a Roomy room, request a quiet courtyard-facing room, and arrive without a car. For a city break focused on the old town, shopping, restaurants, and public transport, MIO by AMANO is a good choice. For lots of luggage, long stays in the room, guaranteed quiet, or car travel, I would compare other hotels as well.

MIO by AMANO Location and Nearby Transport

From Marienplatz and Sendlinger Tor

From Sendlinger Tor, it is only a few minutes on foot through the pedestrian area to the hotel. From Marienplatz, walk through the main shopping streets toward Sendlinger Straße, and you reach the hotel in around ten minutes. Asamkirche is almost next door and makes an easy landmark. The New Town Hall, Glockenspiel, Frauenkirche, and Viktualienmarkt are also easy to reach on foot.

From the Airport and Central Station

From Munich Central Station, take the U-Bahn to Sendlinger Tor and walk the rest of the way. From the airport, take the S-Bahn to Marienplatz and then walk or connect toward Sendlinger Tor. With large suitcases, avoid the busiest shopping hours. Around the hotel, there are supermarkets, cafés, bars, restaurants, and many shops. For a Munich stay without a car, the location is excellent.
