Leopold Hotel Review at a Glance

Classic Schwabing hotel with strong breakfast and practical location

Leopold is a Munich Schwabing hotel that feels classic rather than modern. That is part of its appeal, but it also explains most of its weaknesses. The rooms were generally clean, the beds were comfortable, the bathrooms were better than expected, and breakfast was one of the best parts of the stay. I paid 89 euros per night for a double room including breakfast. I paid 7 euros per day for underground parking. On later stays, outdoor parking was quoted at 8 euros per day and underground parking at 10 euros per day. The main drawback is clear: there is no air conditioning, so summer stays can be hot.

Leopold Check-in Check-out and Payment

Arrival and check-in

Check-in at Leopold was usually quick. The front desk checked my passport and reservation, then gave me the room details. When I arrived by car, I could stop briefly in front of the hotel before being shown the parking area behind the building or the underground garage. That helped a lot because parking in Munich can be difficult. I do recommend checking in at reception before driving into the garage. Going straight into the garage first can lead to a rather sharp response. Most front desk staff were helpful, but the tone varied depending on who was working.

Payment and check-out

I booked both by phone and online, and I paid at the hotel by card. Room charges and parking were settled together at check-out. When breakfast was included, it did not appear as an extra charge. One time, however, two additional breakfasts were incorrectly added to the bill. The way this was handled was disappointing and not guest-friendly. For this hotel, I recommend checking the invoice carefully before paying, especially breakfast count, parking days and minibar charges.

Leopold Room Review by Room Category

Single room at Leopold

The single room at Leopold is compact. It works for a short business stay or a short Munich trip, but it is not spacious. The room had a bed, desk, wardrobe and a small fridge or minibar. The bed was on the firmer side and comfortable enough for proper sleep. The pillow was not too high. The bedding was clean, although the thick duvet was too warm in summer. In one room, the area below the bedding was not as clean as it should have been, so I now check the bed area right after entering the room.

Double room at Leopold

The double room was much more comfortable. A room facing the back was especially quiet, even though the hotel is close to a busy road. The beds were comfortable and the mattresses were not badly worn. The furniture is old-fashioned: wooden wardrobes, carpets, heavy curtains and a nostalgic style. Guests who expect a modern hotel room may not like it. Guests who want a clean, classic Munich hotel room will probably be fine. Lighting was not very bright, and I would have liked more outlets near the bed and desk.

Family room at Leopold

The family room worked well for five people. It had three separate room areas, so it was easier for everyone to sleep comfortably. The bathroom and toilet were separate, which made mornings much easier. For a family trip, a concert weekend or a visit to Allianz Arena, the family room is a practical choice. The carpet and furniture were still dated, but the room was clean. I would not walk barefoot on the carpet, though.

Leopold Cleanliness Bedding Bathroom and Noise

Room cleanliness and smell

Most rooms at Leopold were very clean. Bedding, towels, sink and shower were properly maintained. Still, the age of the hotel shows. Some carpets in rooms and corridors had stains, and one room had a musty smell with poor ventilation. If you are sensitive to smells, open the window right after check-in and ask reception for help if the room does not improve. The windows in my rooms could be opened.

Bathroom, shower and towels

The bathroom was one of the stronger parts of the hotel. Some bathrooms were renovated and felt much newer than the furniture in the room. Shower pressure was good, hot water came quickly and the temperature stayed stable. Some rooms had a shower inside a bathtub, which is less convenient but still usable. Towels were clean and changed properly. Once, the liquid soap dispenser was almost empty, so it is worth checking bathroom supplies right away.

Soundproofing and hallway noise

Rooms facing the back were quiet. I barely heard traffic from Leopoldstraße. Hallway noise depended on the room and on other guests. The doors do not block sound like newer hotels, so voices in the corridor can be heard. It was not loud enough to ruin sleep. The elevator is small and older, so it feels tight with large suitcases. Waiting time was not a major issue.

Leopold Heating Cooling Amenities and Wi-Fi

No air conditioning

The biggest drawback at Leopold is the lack of air conditioning. On hot days, the room heats up quickly. Opening the window helps, but it does not cool the room fast enough. A fan helps, but it does not replace air conditioning. For a summer stay, I recommend bringing a small personal fan or requesting a quieter, shaded room. In winter, heating was generally fine, though one room felt warmer mainly in the bathroom.

Amenities and in-room items

The room equipment is basic but usable. TV, desk, wardrobe and minibar were available. Some minibars had water, juice, beer and wine. Toothbrushes, slippers, free bottled water and a safe were not provided in my room. Bring your own toiletries and slippers if you need them. This is not a luxury hotel; it is a traditional city hotel with the essentials.

Wi-Fi quality

Wi-Fi quality depended on the room. In some rooms, it worked well enough for email and basic browsing. In other rooms, the signal was unstable. I would not rely on it for video calls or large uploads without testing it first. For normal travel use, it is usually enough.

Leopold Breakfast Price and Food

Breakfast price and dining room

Breakfast is one of the best reasons to stay at Leopold. My 89-euro double room rate included breakfast. On one bill, breakfast was listed at 5 euros, which is very good value for Munich. The breakfast room is on the ground floor. It can get busy in the morning, but I did not have to wait long. Coffee was brought to the table, and the breakfast staff were attentive.

Breakfast buffet selection

The buffet included bread, rolls, cheese, ham, yogurt, muesli, fruit, juice, coffee, eggs, sausages and bacon. Warm food was available, which made breakfast more satisfying. Fruit selection was good, and vegetarian options were available, although not extensive. Coffee was good on some days and a little watery on another day. Orange juice and scrambled eggs ran out quickly once, so I recommend going down earlier rather than late. Overall, breakfast at Leopold is very good for the price.

Leopold Staff and Service

Front desk service

The front desk was often a highlight. On good days, staff helped with luggage, explained parking and gave useful public transport advice. Being addressed by name gave the stay a more personal feel than a chain hotel. There were also weaker moments. The tone around garage use and the incorrect breakfast charge was too direct and not helpful. Service quality depends on the person at the desk, but my overall impression remains more positive than negative.

Breakfast staff and housekeeping

Breakfast staff were consistently pleasant. Coffee was served quickly, plates were cleared and questions were answered with care. Housekeeping also did a good job. Towels were changed, the room was kept clean and an extra pillow was brought quickly when requested. The only thing housekeeping cannot fix is the age of the carpets and furniture. That is a renovation issue.

Leopold Parking and Car Access

Outdoor parking and underground garage

Parking is a real advantage at Leopold. There are spaces behind the hotel and an underground garage. I once paid 7 euros per day for the garage. Later, outdoor parking was 8 euros per day and underground parking was 10 euros per day. For this part of Munich, that is fair. Larger cars can fit, but it is best to ask reception first and let them show you where to park.

Car or public transport

Arriving by car is convenient because you can leave it at the hotel and use public transport afterward. For Marienplatz, Odeonsplatz, museums and the city center, underground and tram are easier than driving. BMW Welt and Allianz Arena are also manageable from here. During trade fairs and concerts, I recommend asking about parking in advance.

Leopold Pros Cons and Overall Rating

What I liked

The best parts of Leopold are the location, breakfast, cleanliness, parking and personal service. Schwabing is convenient, back-facing rooms are quiet, and breakfast is strong for the price. Beds were comfortable, bathrooms were clean and some were renovated. If you like traditional family-run hotels, Leopold has real charm.

What I did not like

The lack of air conditioning is a serious downside in summer. Some rooms and corridors are visibly dated. Carpets, furniture and some mattresses could use renovation. Wi-Fi was not always stable. Amenities are basic, so do not expect toothbrushes, slippers, a safe or free bottled water. The incorrect breakfast charge at check-out was frustrating, and the response was not good. Some front desk interactions were too blunt.

Would I stay at Leopold again?

I would stay at Leopold again, but not in every season. For spring, autumn, winter, a business trip, a concert weekend or a short Munich stay, I recommend it. In midsummer, I recommend it only if you can handle a warm room without air conditioning. For a clean Munich Schwabing hotel with good breakfast, fair parking and access to Münchner Freiheit, Leopold is a strong option. If you want modern design and full amenities, choose another hotel.

Leopold Location and Nearby Transport in Munich Schwabing

From Münchner Freiheit and Englischer Garten to the hotel

Leopold is in northern Schwabing with practical access to central Munich. From Münchner Freiheit, you can walk to the hotel or take a short tram or bus ride. Bonner Platz and Dietlindenstraße are also nearby. From Münchner Freiheit, the underground takes you quickly to Marienplatz and Odeonsplatz. Englischer Garten is close enough for a walk, and BMW Welt or Allianz Arena are easy to reach. Nearby you have Lidl, a gas station, cafés, Vietnamese restaurants and Tantris. From the airport, the Lufthansa Express Bus plus underground connection works well. If arriving by car, stop near the entrance first, ask reception about parking, then drive to the rear parking area or underground garage.
