ibis München City Ost Quick Summary

A practical Munich East hotel with clear pros and cons

ibis München City Ost is a practical hotel in Munich East, especially if you do not need to stay right in the old town. After several stays, my impression is clear: this hotel can be good value for Munich, but the experience depends heavily on the room you get. The best rooms are clean, modern, quiet enough, and comfortable for a short trip or business stay. The weaker rooms have real issues with air conditioning, stuffy air, weak shower pressure, bathroom drainage, noise, and sometimes worn mattresses. I paid about 250 euros for 2 nights in a standard double room, and on another stay I paid about 114 euros for 1 night. Breakfast was about 18 euros per person when booked separately. Hotel parking was 17 euros per night. The breakfast can be nice because of the make-your-own waffles, but for 18 euros it was not always strong enough, especially when cups, plates, bread, croissants, or waffle batter were missing. I would stay again, but only with the right expectations: check the air conditioning as soon as you enter the room, ask for a quiet room away from the street, and confirm the exact parking cost before using a garage.

ibis München City Ost Check-in and Payment

Arrival, booking check, and waiting time

Check-in at ibis München City Ost was different from stay to stay. On good days, it was quick: passport check, reservation check, room key, and straight to the elevator. Late check-in was also convenient because the front desk is open 24 hours. On one stay, the reservation was not found right away, and even though I had already paid online, I was asked to pay again. I had to show the booking voucher and payment confirmation before it was fixed. I used different payment methods depending on the booking: prepaid online booking, a special rate booked by email, and card payment at the hotel. For this hotel, I recommend checking everything at the front desk: room rate, breakfast, parking, prepaid amount, and late check-out if you booked it.

Check-out and extra charges

Check-out was usually simple. I returned the key card, checked the bill, and left. There is no minibar in the room, so there are usually no room charges unless you use breakfast, the bar, or parking. Once, my key card stopped working even though I had paid for late check-out, so I had to go back to reception to fix it. Parking costs also need attention. The hotel garage cost 17 euros per night. When I arrived with a larger car, the hotel garage was not suitable, and I was sent to another hotel’s garage nearby. That garage cost 30 euros. After a 3-euro discount, I paid 27 euros. That was much higher than the hotel’s 17-euro parking price. If you arrive with an SUV, estate car, or high vehicle, ask for the exact parking location and final price before you park.

ibis München City Ost Room Review by Room Type

Standard double room

The standard double room at ibis München City Ost is simple and functional. It is fine for a short Munich trip or a business stay, but it is not spacious. One suitcase is manageable; two open suitcases make the room feel tight. There is no large wardrobe, only open shelving and a small hanging area. The desk is good enough for a laptop, and the power sockets near the bed and desk were useful. The bed quality varied by room. In better rooms, the mattress was comfortable, the sheets were clean, and the duvet was light and pleasant. In a weaker room, the mattress was sunken in the middle, and the pillows were too flat. If you need a higher pillow, ask right after check-in. An extra duvet was not always available immediately, so it is better to check the bedding as soon as you enter the room.

Twin room and triple room

The twin room worked well enough for friends, but the space between the beds was limited. The beds were clean, but when pushed together, they could move apart. The triple room was okay for a short stay, but not very comfortable for three adults. The extra bed was more like a basic sleeping option than a proper bed. It can work for a family staying one or two nights, especially if most of the day is spent outside. The rooms did not have a fridge, kettle, or safe. That is a real downside for longer stays. Kaufland is right next to the hotel, and Aldi is also nearby, so buying drinks and snacks is easy. The problem is that there is no fridge to keep anything cold.

Accessible room

The accessible room had a better bathroom layout than the regular rooms. The bathroom was larger, brighter, and fitted with grab rails. The walk-in shower was convenient, and the space was easier to use. For wheelchair users, this is a clear advantage. The downside is that some rooms with connecting doors let in noise from the next room. If quiet sleep matters, ask for a room without a connecting door. In this hotel, the room assignment makes a big difference. A higher floor, quiet side, and no connecting door are the best combination.

ibis München City Ost Cleanliness and Bedding

Room cleaning and smell

Cleanliness was mostly good. In the better rooms, the floor, bed, desk, bathroom, and towels were clean and ready. The hotel feels modern and well kept when the room is properly cleaned. But not every stay was the same. Once, the room had an unpleasant sweaty smell when I entered. After I told reception, housekeeping used a scented spray, and it improved. On another stay, there was a drain smell in the bathroom. I also had rooms where the bathroom silicone looked old and had small mould marks. Small ant-like insects in the bathroom were also an issue once. This is the area where the hotel needs stricter room checks.

Mattress, duvet, and pillows

The bed can be very good here, but it can also disappoint. In good rooms, the mattress was supportive, the sheets were clean, and the duvet felt comfortable. In bad rooms, the mattress was worn out, and the pillows were flat. The bedding itself was clean during my stays, but sleep quality depended on the mattress. If you are sensitive about beds, check the mattress, pillow, and room smell immediately. If something is wrong, ask reception for another room before it gets late.

ibis München City Ost Bathroom and Toilet

Shower, water pressure, and towels

The bathroom is practical when it is in good condition. In better rooms, the sink, mirror, lighting, and shower were clean and large enough. Towels were usually clean and provided in a normal amount. Amenities are basic. There are refillable soap dispensers by the sink and in the shower. Do not expect toothbrushes, razors, cotton pads, or a large toiletry set. The shower is walk-in, but some rooms do not have a proper shower door. Because of that, the bathroom floor gets wet easily. Water pressure also varied. Good rooms had solid pressure and quick hot water. Weak rooms had low pressure and unstable water temperature. On one stay, the water changed from hot to cold within a short time, which made showering uncomfortable.

Drainage and bathroom condition

Drainage was not always reliable. Once, the shower drain was clogged, and it was not repaired during the stay. The toilet also clogged easily in one room. Some bathrooms had walls, ceilings, or silicone seals that needed better maintenance. This hotel can give you two very different bathroom experiences: a good room has a clean, bright, comfortable bathroom; a bad room has smell, weak water pressure, slow drainage, and a wet floor after showering. After check-in, I check the shower, hot water, drain, smell, and towels first.

ibis München City Ost Air Conditioning and Noise

Room temperature and windows

Air conditioning is one of the biggest issues at ibis München City Ost. In cooler weather, the room was fine. In warm weather, some rooms became very stuffy and hot. Setting the thermostat to 17 or 18 degrees did not always cool the room. In one room, the air felt even warmer after lowering the setting. The windows often only tilt open for safety reasons. When the room is too hot, that is not enough. If you open the window, street noise or outside voices can come in, depending on the room side. I recommend this hotel in summer only if you check the air conditioning right after arrival and ask for a room where it actually cools.

Soundproofing

Soundproofing was inconsistent. In good rooms, I barely heard the tram, traffic, or other guests. In other rooms, I heard phone calls from the next room, showers at night, and voices in the hallway. Construction noise and outside shouting were also noticeable when the window was open. A room on the quiet side or a higher floor makes a big difference. I rarely waited long for the elevator, but during check-out time there could be a short wait.

ibis München City Ost Breakfast and Bar

Breakfast for 18 euros

Breakfast cost about 18 euros per person when booked separately. The buffet included bread, rolls, croissants, cheese, ham, eggs, yogurt, fruit, cereal, coffee, and juice. The waffle station is the best part. When waffle batter was available, breakfast felt much better. Still, 18 euros did not always feel justified. The selection was decent, but not very varied. After a few days, it became repetitive. On some mornings, glasses, cups, plates, or small bowls were missing. Rolls, croissants, and waffle batter also ran out at times. If breakfast is included in the room rate, I would take it. If it costs 18 euros extra, I would sometimes choose a nearby bakery instead.

Bar, snacks, and drinks

The bar and reception area are open 24 hours, which is useful when arriving late or wanting a drink in the evening. There are drinks, snacks, and vending machines. The bar is fine for a quick drink, but it is not a real dinner option. Once, a 10-euro cocktail was disappointing because it was not served as ordered. For a small snack, the hotel is fine. For proper food, I prefer the nearby restaurants, bakery, or supermarket.

ibis München City Ost Staff and Service

Front desk

Service at the front desk was very mixed. Some staff members were friendly, fast, and helpful. One male receptionist made a particularly good impression when helping with public transport, key cards, check-out, and general questions. Other staff members felt cold, rushed, and not very helpful. When there were booking or parking questions, the answers were not always clear. That created unnecessary stress. At a hotel, especially during check-in and parking discussions, I expect clear information.

Breakfast staff and housekeeping

Breakfast service was good on quieter mornings but struggled when many guests arrived at the same time. Dishes and food were not always refilled quickly enough. Housekeeping was usually solid, and most rooms were clean. Not every issue was fixed quickly, though. Once, housekeeping knocked early in the morning even though check-out was until 12:00. On the positive side, they did react when I reported a room smell.

ibis München City Ost Parking

Hotel underground garage

The hotel has its own underground garage. On my most recent stay, it cost 17 euros per night. On earlier stays, I had paid 14 or 15 euros per night, but the latest price I paid was 17 euros. The entrance is narrow, and using the room card makes access easier. It is best to check in first, get the room card, and then drive into the garage. For large cars, SUVs, estate cars, or higher vehicles, the garage is not ideal. Some spaces are narrow or mechanical, and the system can be confusing the first time.

Alternative parking nearby

If your car does not fit the hotel garage, parking can become expensive. I was directed to another hotel’s garage nearby. It cost 30 euros, and after a 3-euro discount I paid 27 euros. That was not close to the hotel’s 17-euro price. Free street parking near the hotel is a matter of luck. If you are visiting Munich for sightseeing, public transport is easier than bringing a car. If you do arrive by car, confirm the vehicle height, garage type, and final price before parking.

ibis München City Ost Pros and Cons

What I liked

I liked the modern room design, mostly good cleanliness, 24-hour reception, easy access to Tram 21, and supermarkets nearby. For Munich, the price can be good when it is not peak season. Paying about 250 euros for 2 nights in a standard double room was acceptable for Munich. Breakfast can be enjoyable, especially because of the waffles. Having Kaufland, Aldi, and bakeries nearby makes the stay easier.

What I did not like

The weak points are the inconsistent room quality, unreliable air conditioning, occasional weak shower pressure, wet bathroom floors after showering, no fridge, no kettle, and no safe. Parking is also a real issue if you arrive with a larger car. Service was not consistent. Some staff members were excellent, while others felt unfriendly or inattentive. For 18 euros, breakfast should be refilled more reliably.

ibis München City Ost Overall Rating

Who should book this hotel?

ibis München City Ost suits travelers looking for a simple, modern hotel in Munich East with good public transport access. It works for business trips, concert stays, short city breaks, and budget-conscious Munich travel. It is not the best choice for travelers who want large rooms, many amenities, a fridge, kettle, very quiet nights, and guaranteed strong air conditioning. In summer, I recommend it only if the air conditioning works properly. With a car, I recommend it only if parking is confirmed in advance.

Would I stay again?

I would stay at ibis München City Ost again, but not without conditions. I would ask for a quiet room on a higher floor, check the air conditioning immediately, and confirm the exact parking cost before using the garage. If those points are fine, it is a useful hotel in Munich East. If the air conditioning, bathroom, or service fails, the stay can quickly become disappointing.

ibis München City Ost Location and Transport

Tram 21, S-Bahn, and Marienplatz

ibis München City Ost is in Berg am Laim, east of central Munich. It is not within walking distance of the old town, but public transport is convenient. The Tram 21 stop is about a 5-minute walk from the hotel. By tram, it takes around 20 minutes to reach the area around Munich Central Station and Marienplatz. Berg am Laim S-Bahn station is about 12 to 15 minutes away on foot, which is useful for reaching other parts of Munich. Kaufland is right next to the hotel, and Aldi, bakeries, and small places to eat are nearby. The location is practical for Munich East, Ostbahnhof, trade fair plans, or a city trip by tram. If you want to be in the old town every evening, you need to plan the travel time. Without a car, the hotel is easier to use because the tram and S-Bahn are the strongest reasons to stay here.
