Hotel Altmünchen Munich Stay at a Glance
Hotel Altmünchen is a practical city hotel in Munich, and its biggest strength is the location. It sits close to Sendlinger Tor, within walking distance of Marienplatz, Viktualienmarkt, Karlsplatz, and the old town. The rooms are not brand-new or luxurious, but they are functional, generally clean, and comfortable enough for a Munich city break. The double room with a private bathroom was warm, clean, and moderately spacious. The bed was comfortable, the bedding was clean, and the shower pressure was good. There are real downsides, though. Some rooms are not well soundproofed, street-facing rooms can be noisy even with the windows closed, a few bathrooms need renovation, and there is no air conditioning. I paid 146 euros for one night. Breakfast cost 16 euros on one stay, and 18 euros on another. Overall, this Hotel Altmünchen review comes down to a very central Munich location, friendly staff, decent rooms, and a few clear comfort issues.
Hotel Altmünchen Check-in and Payment
Late Check-in
The 24-hour reception is one of the most useful things about Hotel Altmünchen. I checked in around midnight without any trouble. The booking check and passport check were quick, and the staff handled the late arrival well. On another stay, the room was ready several hours before the official check-in time, which made a big difference after a flight.
Room Price and Card Payment
I booked online and paid by card. The room rate I paid was 146 euros for one night. Breakfast was not included in the room price, so I paid extra for it. On one stay breakfast was 16 euros, and on another stay it was 18 euros. It is worth checking whether breakfast is included before confirming the booking. There was one bad payment-related moment. When the credit card payment did not go through at first, the room cancellation was brought up. That was not a pleasant arrival experience. Before staying here, I recommend checking that the card used for the booking has been accepted properly.
Check-out and Extra Costs
Check-out was easy. I returned the key and checked any extras before leaving. The extras matter at this hotel. Breakfast, bar drinks, and coffee capsules are charged separately. A coffee capsule cost 1 euro. There was no free bottled water and no free coffee in the room. The lost key fee was a major downside: 499 euros was mentioned. On one stay, only one key was provided, which was inconvenient when two people wanted to go out separately.
Hotel Altmünchen Room Review
Double Room with Private Bathroom
The double room with a private bathroom was clean, warm, and moderately spacious. It was not large, but it worked well for a city stay in central Munich. The bed was comfortable, the mattress felt supportive, and the bedding was clean. The room had a desk and a chair, so it was possible to use a laptop or plan the day comfortably. The TV had many German channels and a few English channels. The Wi-Fi was fast and reliable throughout the stay.
Single Room and Triple Room
The single room on the sixth floor was big enough for one person. It had the basics needed for a short business trip or solo stay. The room for three people also had enough space, but the street-facing location was a drawback. The windows were not modern enough to block the traffic noise fully. Even when closed, the sound from the street was close. If you are sensitive to noise, ask for a room facing the inner courtyard. The courtyard room was much quieter and worked better for sleep.
Cleanliness, Furniture, and Soundproofing
Cleanliness was mostly good, but not perfect in every room. Many rooms were tidy, the beds were clean, and the toilet was well kept. Still, I also had less impressive details: hair was found in a room, and towels should be checked more carefully because hair on towels is not acceptable. The hotel is older, and some furniture, corridors, and bathroom details show their age. The room decor is a little tired, but generally maintained. Soundproofing is a weak point. I could hear voices from the next room and footsteps from above. It was not always disruptive, but it is something light sleepers should know.
Heating and No Air Conditioning
In winter, the room stayed very warm. During a December stay, it was comfortable throughout the night. In warmer weather, the lack of air conditioning is a real issue. When the daytime temperature goes above 20°C, the room becomes too warm, and after showering it gets even more uncomfortable. For a summer visit to Munich, this is one of the most important things to consider before booking Hotel Altmünchen.
Hotel Altmünchen Bathroom and Amenities
Shower, Water Pressure, and Bathroom Comfort
The bathroom in the double room was practical. The walk-in shower was comfortable, the water pressure was good, and hot water was stable. The sink and toilet were fine for daily use. In the better-maintained rooms, the bathroom was clean and easy to use.
Older Bathrooms and Small Problems
Not every bathroom was at the same level. Some bathrooms were clearly older than the rooms and had not been fully modernized. In one bathroom, water leaked slightly from the shower onto the floor. It was not a serious problem, but I had to wipe the floor after showering. In another room, the bathroom needed renovation, with yellowed areas and a toilet that was not clean enough. This is one of the main weaknesses of the hotel.
Amenities, Safe, Fridge, and Elevator
Amenities are minimal. Instead of separate shampoo and body wash, there was one all-in-one product. It is enough for a short stay, but I recommend bringing your own toiletries. A hairdryer was available. There was no kettle, no free tea, and no free coffee in the room. In one room the fridge was not turned on, and there was no safe. The elevator is old and small. It worked, but it is not comfortable with a lot of luggage, a stroller, or wheelchair needs.
Hotel Altmünchen Breakfast Review
Food and Quality
Breakfast at Hotel Altmünchen varied by day. The usual selection included bread, rolls, cheese, ham, yogurt, fruit, eggs, and hot and cold drinks. The scrambled eggs were especially good when freshly refilled. The selection was not huge, but it was enough for a classic Western breakfast. I liked that the staff did not leave too much hot food sitting out at once. They refilled smaller amounts, so the eggs stayed fresher. The staff also helped with food allergy questions.
Breakfast Price and Downsides
Breakfast cost 16 euros on one stay and 18 euros on another. At 16 euros, the selection felt limited on a weaker day. The coffee was weak, and the hard-boiled eggs were not good. At 18 euros, the price felt high. On a good day, breakfast was tasty and convenient; on a weaker day, a nearby café was the better choice. The breakfast area is not large, so it can feel tight when many guests arrive at the same time. The staff did refill food properly and remained friendly.
Hotel Altmünchen Staff and Parking
Front Desk, Breakfast Staff, and Housekeeping
The staff is one of the stronger parts of Hotel Altmünchen. The front desk was usually friendly and helpful, and English was spoken well. I received useful help with late check-in, early room access, and local transport questions. Breakfast staff were attentive, especially with allergy questions. Housekeeping also handled basic needs well. The only clear negative experience was the arrival connected to the credit card issue. That first interaction could have been handled better.
Parking at the Hotel
There is parking in the inner courtyard. I was able to park there even when the hotel was busy. However, this is not a large hotel garage or spacious car park. If you arrive by car, ask the hotel in advance about availability. Because the hotel is in central Munich, public transport is usually easier. Sendlinger Tor station is very close, and Munich Central Station is only one stop away.
Overall Satisfaction and Staying Again
Hotel Altmünchen is not perfect. Thin walls, no air conditioning, older bathrooms, a small elevator, basic amenities, no free water or coffee, and inconsistent cleaning details are real downsides. Still, the positives are strong: excellent location, friendly staff, comfortable beds, good water pressure, reliable Wi-Fi, and quiet courtyard rooms. If I can book it for around 146 euros per night, it offers good value for central Munich. I recommend Hotel Altmünchen for travelers who care more about location and a practical room than modern hotel design.
Hotel Altmünchen Location
From Sendlinger Tor to the Hotel
The location is the main reason to book Hotel Altmünchen. From Sendlinger Tor, it is only a short walk to the hotel. Several U-Bahn lines stop there, including U1, U2, U3, and U6. Munich Central Station is only one stop away, and it is also possible to walk there in about 15 to 16 minutes if your luggage is manageable.
Marienplatz, Old Town, and Nearby Landmarks
Marienplatz is about a 10-minute walk away, roughly 750 meters from the hotel. You can walk through the shopping streets into the old town, and Viktualienmarkt, Frauenkirche, the New Town Hall, and Karlsplatz are also easy to reach on foot. In the morning, there are cafés and bakeries near Sendlinger Tor for coffee and pastries. In the evening, it is easy to walk back after dinner in the old town. For a Munich trip focused on sightseeing, shopping, Christmas markets, and public transport, the location of Hotel Altmünchen is excellent.
