Overall Review
A Clear Review After Several Visits
Augustiner Klosterwirt is a strong choice for traditional Bavarian food in central Munich. It sits close to the Frauenkirche and Marienplatz, making it very easy to reach during sightseeing. After several visits, I tried pork knuckle, schnitzel, sausages, roast pork, Sauerbraten, potato salad, dumplings, apple desserts, and Augustiner beer. The portions were generous, the food was hearty, and most dishes paired very well with beer. Current on-site conditions may differ.
Food-Focused Impression
The restaurant is strongest when it serves classic pork dishes, sausages, dumplings, cabbage sides, and fresh beer. Some sauces and sides can be salty, so it is better to eat the heavier meat dishes with dumplings, sauerkraut, or potato salad instead of tasting the sauce alone.
Waiting Time and Seating
Waiting Time by Visit
On quieter days, I was seated almost immediately. During busy evenings and weekends, the restaurant was crowded, and I waited around 10 to 20 minutes. I managed to get a table without a reservation more than once, but I recommend making a reservation for dinner.
Seating and Atmosphere
Shared tables are part of the traditional beer hall experience here. The first time, it felt slightly unfamiliar, but it matched the Munich wirtshaus atmosphere well. The indoor dining area felt traditional and warm, while the lower-level seating had a stronger old beer hall character. Outdoor seating was especially pleasant on good-weather days.
Cost and Payment
Cost Per Person
My meals usually cost around 20 to 40 euros per person. A pork knuckle, roast pork, or schnitzel with beer naturally falls into the 30-euro range. Adding dessert or sharing several dishes can bring the total higher. Considering the central location and portion size, the price level is reasonable.
Payment and Tip
Card payment was available during my visits. Cash is also convenient if you want to leave a separate tip. During busy hours, it sometimes took extra time to get the bill, so I recommend asking for it early if you have plans afterward. Tipping should be based on your own satisfaction with the service.
Detailed Food Review
Pork Knuckle
The pork knuckle was one of the best dishes I tried here. The skin was crisp, and the meat inside was rich, heavy, and satisfying. A half portion was enough for one person. With beer, the dish became easier to enjoy because the fresh beer balanced the fatty pork well.
Dumpling and Cabbage with Pork Knuckle
The dumpling absorbed the dark sauce nicely and made the dish feel complete. The cabbage side added acidity and freshness. This pairing is important because it keeps the pork knuckle from becoming too heavy.
Roast Pork and Crispy Pork Roast
The roast pork was hearty and tender. The sauce was rich and worked well with the dumpling. The crispy pork roast had a satisfying texture from the crust. The sauce was on the salty side, so it tasted best when eaten with the sides.
Franconian Sauerbraten
The Sauerbraten was soft, aromatic, and balanced. The sauce had a mild sweetness and acidity, which kept the dish from feeling too heavy. With bread dumpling and red cabbage, it became one of the more complete traditional dishes on the menu.
Schnitzel
The schnitzel was large and filling. The breading was not too thick, and the meat was not overly salty. It worked well with potato salad. The crispiness varied slightly between visits, so I still prefer the pork knuckle and roast pork as the stronger choices here.
Sausage Platter
The sausage platter was one of the easiest dishes to pair with beer. The sausages were juicy, salty, and well-seasoned. Some had a mild spicy note, so personal preference matters. With potato salad or sauerkraut, the saltiness became more balanced. For groups, I recommend ordering a sausage platter to share.
Nuremberg Sausages and Potato Salad
The Nuremberg sausages were good for sharing because the quantity can be adjusted. The potato salad tasted good, but it was sometimes served very cold. When it reached a slightly warmer temperature, the flavor became better and matched the sausages more naturally.
Cheese Spätzle
The cheese spätzle was creamy, savory, and filling. It worked well as a softer dish between heavier meat plates. The cheese flavor was clear without being too overwhelming. It is also a good option for someone who does not want a large meat dish.
Fish Dishes
The grilled trout was lighter than the meat dishes and worked well with potatoes and lemon butter. The baked pollock fillet was slightly dry in some parts. Overall, I recommend the meat dishes more strongly here because they match the restaurant’s character better.
Salad and Cabbage Sides
The salad was fresher than expected for a large traditional restaurant. Sauerkraut and cabbage salad were important because their acidity balanced the heavy meat dishes. If you order pork knuckle or sausages, I recommend not skipping the cabbage sides.
Apple Strudel and Apple Dessert
The apple strudel was a pleasant finish after the heavy main dishes. The warm apple flavor and soft texture made it easy to enjoy after beer and meat. The baked apple dessert was also memorable because it was sweet, lightly crisp, and not too heavy.
Augustiner Beer
The beer was one of the main reasons the meal felt satisfying. The Helles was clean, fresh, and easy to drink. Edelstoff had more body and worked well with stronger meat dishes. Dunkel had a malty finish and paired especially well with sausages and roast pork.
Staff Friendliness and Service
Speed of Service
The staff were generally quick and friendly. Drinks arrived fast, and the food was served quickly even when the restaurant was busy. Some staff explained the menu well and gave useful recommendations.
Busy-Hour Differences
When the restaurant was extremely crowded, it took longer to order dessert or get the bill. That is understandable for a large and busy beer hall, but it is still something to keep in mind. Overall, the service was solid and often very good.
Parking and Restroom
Parking
Parking near the restaurant was difficult. If you come by car, a paid parking garage is the realistic option. Public transportation and walking are much easier for this location.
Restroom and Accessibility
The restroom was easy to use and properly maintained. Accessibility was also a positive point, and wheelchair-friendly facilities were available. If seated downstairs, it is best to ask the staff for the most convenient access.
Pros and Cons
Pros
The biggest strengths are the central location, generous portions, good beer, and traditional atmosphere. Pork knuckle, roast pork, sausages, dumplings, potato salad, and Augustiner beer work very well together. It is a strong choice for a classic Munich meal.
Cons
The main drawbacks are noise, crowds, and occasionally salty sauces. If you want a quiet conversation, avoid peak dinner hours. It is also better to ask for the bill early when the restaurant is full.
Satisfaction and Revisit Intention
Overall Satisfaction
After several visits, I am highly satisfied with Augustiner Klosterwirt. Not every dish was perfect, but the main classics were strong. The pork knuckle, roast pork, sausages, and beer make the restaurant worth visiting.
Recommendation
I recommend Augustiner Klosterwirt to anyone who wants traditional Bavarian food with beer in Munich. For a first visit, I recommend ordering a half pork knuckle, a sausage platter, and an Augustiner beer. For groups, I recommend sharing several meat dishes and sides.
Revisit Intention
I would visit again. Next time, I would choose a quieter hour and order pork knuckle, sausages, dumplings, and Dunkel beer again. For dessert, I recommend choosing one of the apple desserts.
Location Description
Near the Frauenkirche
Augustiner Klosterwirt is located very close to the Frauenkirche and is easy to reach from Marienplatz on foot. From Marienplatz, walk through the old town toward the Frauenkirche, and you will reach the restaurant area quickly. St. Michael’s Church and Promenadeplatz are also nearby.
Public Transport Access
The easiest way to visit is by getting off at Marienplatz and walking from there. The route is short and simple, and it passes through the old town. Because parking is difficult nearby, I recommend using public transportation and walking instead of driving.
