Review Summary

Overall impression after several visits

Taj Mahal is an Indian restaurant in Munich Neuhausen-Nymphenburg that stands out mainly for its food. After several visits, the strongest dishes were Butter Chicken, Dal Makhani, Palak Paneer, Paneer Butter Masala, Garlic Naan and the Thali options. The vegetarian selection is a major advantage, and the menu offers enough variety for groups with different preferences. Still, the restaurant is not equally strong in every area. Service varied a lot from visit to visit, busy evenings could be slow, and a few meat dishes were less convincing than the curries and paneer dishes. The interior has a distinct Indian style and feels decorative, but some seats are tight and the room can get loud. The outdoor seating is pleasant in summer, but the nearby major intersection makes traffic noise noticeable.

Who should visit

I recommend Taj Mahal to anyone who wants Indian curries, naan, thali and mango lassi in Munich. Lunch is the better option for a more affordable meal, while dinner with several dishes and drinks moves into a higher price range. Guests who care most about quiet seating, easy parking and consistently fast service should choose the time carefully. Waiting time, service, portion size and menu details can vary depending on the visit.

Waiting Time and Best Time to Visit

Lunch visits

During lunch, I usually did not have to wait long. Orders were taken fairly quickly, and the food arrived at a comfortable pace. The lunch menu felt more affordable than many dinner options and worked well for a practical meal during the day.

Dinner visits

Dinner was more inconsistent. With a reservation, seating was usually easier, but on busy evenings even ordering drinks could take too long. On one visit, the main course took around 45 minutes to arrive, which made the meal less enjoyable. For weekends, holidays and larger groups, I recommend booking in advance.

Cost and Payment

Lunch price range

Lunch usually landed around 10 to 20 euros per person. Thali and lunch menu options were the best value because they included several components in one meal. Portions were not always huge, but with rice and naan they were enough for a satisfying lunch.

Dinner price range

For dinner, 20 to 40 euros per person is a more realistic range depending on the order. A main dish, naan, lassi and extra drinks can raise the bill quickly. Many dishes justify the price through flavor and presentation, but some meat dishes felt too small or too dry for the cost on certain visits.

Payment experience

Payment was handled after the meal through the staff. When service was attentive, it was simple and quick. On slower days, paying also took longer because it was necessary to get the staff’s attention more than once.

Parking and Accessibility

Parking situation

Parking is one of the weakest parts of visiting Taj Mahal. The surrounding streets are busy, and finding a free space is difficult. Paid street parking is often the realistic option. Coming by public transport or on foot is much easier than arriving by car.

Entrance and seating

The entrance has steps, so it is not especially convenient for wheelchairs or strollers. Inside, the atmosphere is appealing, but some seating areas are tight. With large bags or a bigger group, the space can feel limited.

Food Review

Papadam and sauces

The papadam with different sauces was a good start to the meal. It was crisp, light and worked well before the main dishes. The sauces added acidity, spice and mild sweetness without becoming heavy.

Thali dishes

Vegetable Thali and Taj Mahal Thali were among the best choices. They brought together different curries, rice, naan, raita and small sides in one order. This makes thali especially useful for a first visit. The vegetarian thali was flavorful without being too heavy, while the mixed thali options gave more variety.

Butter Chicken

Butter Chicken was creamy, mild and slightly sweet. It worked especially well with Butter Naan or Garlic Naan. Anyone expecting strong heat should ask for a higher spice level when ordering. In its regular version, it is an easy dish to enjoy.

Chicken Masala and Chilli Chicken

Chicken Masala had a deeper spice profile and paired well with rice. Chilli Chicken was the better choice for a stronger flavor. On good visits, the meat was tender and the sauce was balanced. On weaker visits, the meat did not fully match the strength of the seasoning.

Palak Paneer and Paneer Butter Masala

Palak Paneer was mild, creamy and savory, with a clear spinach flavor. Paneer Butter Masala was richer and especially good with Garlic Naan. For vegetarian diners, these two dishes are among the safest recommendations.

Dal Makhani

Dal Makhani was creamy, filling and ideal with naan. It had a deep, buttery taste without being too spicy. It is a strong companion to a hotter curry and also works well as a main dish on its own.

Garlic Naan and Butter Naan

The naan was one of the most consistent strengths. Garlic Naan had a good aroma and was perfect for scooping up sauces. Butter Naan was softer and paired well with creamy curries. Ordering only rice would mean missing one of the best parts of the meal.

Mango Chicken and Mango Lassi

Mango Chicken was sweeter and milder, making it a good choice for guests who do not want strong heat. Mango Lassi was creamy and worked well after spiced dishes. It was a good addition when sharing several curries.

Lamb and duck dishes

The lamb and duck dishes were less consistent. One lamb dish was too dry and hard to cut. A duck dish had good seasoning, but the skin was not convincing. Guests who want a safer first order should choose chicken, paneer or thali before trying these options.

Weaker food experiences

Not every dish was successful. One Chana-style dish was too oily, some dishes marked as spicy were not spicy enough, and one Vegetable Tandoori order did not match the menu description. On one visit, there was also a foreign object issue in the food, which seriously lowered the satisfaction of the meal. Taj Mahal can cook very well, but quality control was not equally stable every time.

Service and Friendliness

Good service experiences

On good days, the service was friendly, attentive and helpful. Staff explained dishes, helped with spice levels and managed group orders well. On one special occasion, there was a small birthday gesture at the table, which made the dinner feel more personal.

Inconsistent service

On other visits, the service was much weaker. Drinks took too long, extra requests were forgotten, and some staff members felt unfriendly or uninterested. Sometimes I had to signal several times to order more or ask for the bill. Service consistency is the biggest weakness of this restaurant.

Interior and Outdoor Seating

Interior

The interior is decorative, classic and strongly Indian in style. White tablecloths, bold colors and the furnishings give the dining room a special character. At the same time, it could feel stuffy on some visits, and when the restaurant was full, the room felt tight.

Outdoor seating and noise

The outdoor seating is pleasant in summer, but the nearby major intersection makes it noisy. Conversation is still possible, but the traffic remains part of the meal. Inside, the restaurant also gets louder when it is full. For a quieter meal, lunch or early dinner is the better choice.

Restroom Availability

Restroom condition

Restrooms were available and usable. However, they were not the strongest part of the restaurant. Compared with the decorated dining room, the restroom area felt simpler and could use improvement.

Pros and Cons

Pros

The biggest advantages are the large menu, strong vegetarian options and many successful curry and naan dishes. Thali, Garlic Naan, Butter Chicken, Palak Paneer, Dal Makhani and Mango Lassi make the restaurant worth visiting. Lunch offers good value, and on days with attentive service the meal feels very enjoyable.

Cons

The main disadvantages are inconsistent service, difficult parking, noise and uneven quality in some dishes. Some portions were smaller than expected, a few meat dishes were dry, and the indoor air was unpleasant on certain visits. Accessibility is also not ideal because of the steps at the entrance.

Satisfaction and Revisit Intention

Overall satisfaction

Overall, I was satisfied with Taj Mahal mainly because the best dishes were genuinely enjoyable. The restaurant has enough strong food to justify another visit. At the same time, service and smaller details are not always on the same level.

Revisit intention

I would visit again, preferably for lunch or early dinner. For a first visit, I recommend Vegetable Thali or Taj Mahal Thali, Garlic Naan, Butter Chicken, Palak Paneer and Mango Lassi. Anyone sensitive to noise or slow service should avoid peak hours.

Location Description

Near Landshuter Allee

Taj Mahal is located in Neuhausen-Nymphenburg near the meeting point of Landshuter Allee and Nymphenburger Straße. City Hotel MAX Munich West, AMEA, Mochi Asian Fusion Restaurant and Alpha-Apotheke are useful nearby landmarks. This makes the restaurant fairly easy to find without relying on the exact address.

From Rotkreuzplatz

From Rotkreuzplatz, follow Nymphenburger Straße toward Landshuter Allee. Once you reach the large intersection, the restaurant is in the row of businesses near the main road. Because parking is difficult, public transport or walking is the better way to get there.
