Azuki Review Summary

Upscale Asian Dining in Central Munich

Azuki is an upscale Asian restaurant in Munich Altstadt-Lehel, suitable for modern sushi, warm Asian dishes, cocktails and desserts in a polished setting. After several visits, the strongest impressions were the stylish interior, the central location near the National Theatre and the carefully plated food. The menu includes sushi, sashimi, soft shell crab, ribeye steak, salmon teriyaki, bao buns, dumplings, duck, desserts and cocktails.

Price Level and Overall Impression

The price level is high. Lunch can stay around €20–40 per person depending on the order, while dinner with sushi, meat, drinks and dessert can easily reach €60–100+ per person. The food quality and atmosphere are strong, but some portions are small for the price. With a reservation, I usually entered without a long wait, though busy evenings could involve about 10 minutes of waiting. Azuki works best for a special dinner, a date, or a meal before or after the opera.

Waiting Time and Reservation

Reserved Visits

A reservation is strongly recommended. With a reservation, I was usually seated quickly. During busy dinner hours, the wait was still manageable. Lunch felt more relaxed, while evenings were clearly busier.

Two-Hour Table Window

Some reservations came with a two-hour table window. For a simple dinner, that is enough. For starters, mains, desserts and drinks, it can feel tight. Azuki is better suited to a refined meal within a set time rather than a very long evening at the table.

Cost and Payment

Lunch Cost

Lunch is the more accessible way to visit Azuki. Bowls, udon, small plates and selected sushi dishes keep the bill lower than dinner. Still, this is not a cheap restaurant, and the pricing reflects the central location, interior and service level.

Dinner Cost

Dinner becomes expensive quickly. Sushi rolls, sashimi, meat dishes, cocktails and desserts can push the bill high. For two people, a fuller dinner can easily exceed €150. If the goal is large portions, the value may feel less convincing.

Payment Experience

Payment was handled through the service at the end of the meal. On some visits, the bill was brought up rather quickly due to the next reservation window. That helps the restaurant manage tables, but it can reduce the relaxed feeling of the meal. Checking menu prices before ordering is a good idea.

Parking and Access

Parking Situation

Parking near Azuki is difficult. Street parking is not something to rely on. If arriving by car, a paid parking garage nearby is the more practical choice.

Public Transport Access

Public transport is the easier option. From Marienplatz, it is possible to walk toward the Residenz and the National Theatre. The location is convenient for combining dinner with a walk through central Munich.

Food Evaluation

Sushi and Sashimi

Sushi and sashimi are among the strongest reasons to visit Azuki. On good visits, the fish was fresh, tender and cleanly prepared. Toro Sashimi, Sake Aburi Nigiri, Azuki Roll, Dragon Roll and Soft Shell Crab Roll stood out. The sushi rice was not equally perfect every time, but the sushi section remained one of the most satisfying parts of the menu.

Soft Shell Crab

The soft shell crab was a clear highlight. The outside was crisp, while the inside remained tender and flavorful. It works well as a starter because it is distinctive without being too heavy. Even guests who are not deeply into seafood can enjoy it.

Ribeye Steak

The ribeye steak was rich, juicy and well prepared. The portion was not large, but the flavor was memorable. Anyone who wants more than sushi should consider adding the ribeye to the order.

Salmon Teriyaki

The salmon teriyaki offered tender fish with a balanced ginger-teriyaki sauce. The sauce worked well with the richness of the salmon. When the presentation was simpler, it felt less special for the price, but the flavor remained solid.

Crispy Duck and Duck Dishes

The duck dishes varied. Fried rice with duck was especially enjoyable because the rice, roasted notes and duck flavor worked well together. Crispy duck was better with sauce than on its own. Duck is best ordered with curry, rice or a rich sauce.

Bao Burger and Bao Buns

Bao burgers and bao buns added variety to the meal. The soft bun worked well with beef and savory fillings. The beef fillet bao burger was an interesting alternative to a standard starter.

Dumplings and Shaomai

Dumplings and shaomai were solid but not the restaurant’s strongest dishes. They were warm, pleasant and suitable as side plates. When choosing only a few dishes, sushi, soft shell crab or steak are stronger picks.

Udon and Bowls

Udon and bowls are better suited to lunch. Udon with tofu and wok vegetables was satisfying and well seasoned. Bowls are a lighter option for a central Munich lunch without ordering several expensive plates.

Salads and Vegetable Dishes

Papaya salad and beef salad brought freshness to the table. The beef salad had a good sweet-and-sour character. Papaya salad was not equally strong every time, but it worked well beside fried or richer dishes.

Vegetarian Options

The vegetarian selection is good. Crispy tofu, mushroom dishes, vegetable bowls and warm eggplant are all useful choices. The warm eggplant with chili dip was especially enjoyable. Vegetarians can build a complete meal here without difficulty.

Desserts

Desserts are worth ordering at Azuki. Citrus cheesecake, matcha desserts, coconut dessert, sorbets and ice cream combinations were visually polished and creative. The desserts feel like small plated artworks and make the meal end on a stronger note.

Cocktails and Drinks

The cocktail list is distinctive. Lychee Martini, Matcha Dream, Litchi Spell, Saketini and Tokyo Mule fit the Asian-inspired menu well. Sake-based drinks are more specific in taste, so anyone unsure about those flavors should ask the staff before ordering.

Staff Friendliness and Service

Attentive Service

The service was often friendly, fast and attentive. Glasses were refilled, tables were kept clean and dishes were explained. When the service worked well, the visit felt properly upscale.

Service Inconsistency

During busy times, the service could feel rushed. The fixed reservation window sometimes made the end of the meal feel pressured. For this price level, a calmer and more consistent service experience would make the restaurant stronger.

Restroom and Atmosphere

Restroom Availability

Restrooms were available and well maintained. The design matched the upscale feel of the restaurant. This part of the visit was clean, modern and comfortable.

Interior and Terrace

The interior is elegant, modern and stylish. High ceilings, a bar area, an open kitchen and warm lighting create a special dining atmosphere. The terrace is especially appealing because of the view toward the National Theatre area. When the restaurant is full, the noise level can rise.

Pros

Wide Menu

Azuki offers sushi, warm Asian dishes, meat, fish, vegetarian options, desserts and cocktails. This makes it suitable for couples, groups and family dinners.

Location and Mood

The location near the National Theatre is a major advantage. It fits very well before or after an opera, during a central Munich shopping day, or for a stylish dinner date.

Food Presentation

Many dishes are beautifully plated. Sushi and desserts in particular make the meal feel visually refined and memorable.

Cons

High Prices

The main downside is the price. Some dishes are excellent, but not every portion feels large enough for the amount paid. Anyone looking for a filling and inexpensive meal should choose another place.

Reservation Time Pressure

The two-hour table window can affect the experience. It is fine for a polished but efficient dinner, but less ideal for a long evening with many courses.

Variable Service

Service is often very good, but it is not equally calm during peak hours. At this level, more consistency would improve the full experience.

Satisfaction and Revisit Intention

Overall Satisfaction

Azuki is a strong choice for modern Asian cuisine in an upscale setting. The best orders were sushi, soft shell crab, ribeye steak, salmon teriyaki, eggplant, vegetarian dishes and desserts. Not every dish fully justifies the price, but the overall experience remains high quality.

Recommendation

I would visit Azuki again. I recommend it for a date, a dinner before or after the opera, a central Munich lunch, or a special evening with friends. I recommend ordering sushi, soft shell crab, ribeye steak, eggplant and dessert. Current on-site conditions, prices, menu items and reservation rules may now be different.

Location Description

Near the National Theatre

Azuki is close to the National Theatre and Max-Joseph-Platz. From Marienplatz, walk toward the Residenz and continue toward the opera area. Once near the National Theatre, the restaurant is easy to reach.

Nearby Places

Marienplatz, the Residenz, Hofbräuhaus München and Maximilianstraße are all nearby. This makes Azuki easy to combine with shopping, sightseeing or a cultural evening in central Munich.
