Review Summary
Impression After Several Visits
Taverna Naxos is a Greek restaurant in Munich Pasing Obermenzing that impressed me after several visits with flavorful food, friendly service, and a strong gluten free menu. Gyros, moussaka, baby calamari, mixed grill, fish platter, gluten free pita, tzatziki, and mango tiramisu were the strongest items. It is a good choice for both lunch and dinner, especially for anyone looking for Greek food with reliable gluten free options.
What to Know Before Visiting
There were also clear downsides. Dinner can get busy, and on one visit I waited around 45 to 60 minutes for the food. Parking was not always easy. Payment was centered around cash or EC card during my visits, and Visa, Mastercard, and Amex were not reliable options. The dining room became tight and loud on busy evenings. Bread or salad could also come as an extra charge. On site conditions may vary depending on the day and time of visit.
Food Review
Gyros and Tzatziki
The gyros was one of the most reliable dishes here. The meat had a lightly crisp outside and stayed juicy inside. With onions and tzatziki, it had a strong but fresh Greek flavor. The Gyros Spezial was especially satisfying when the sauce and meat were well balanced. On one visit, however, the meat pieces were cut too large, the sauce was too limited, and the potato slices lacked seasoning. That was a clear downside.
Moussaka
The moussaka was soft, rich, and filling. The meat, vegetables, and sauce worked well together. It was hearty without becoming too heavy. For a classic Greek main dish, I recommend ordering the moussaka.
Baby Calamari and Seafood
The baby calamari was tender and clean tasting. Scampi, octopus, and the fish platter were also good choices. The octopus was soft, and the fish platter tasted fresh and well seasoned. Seafood dishes can raise the total bill quickly, especially with starters, wine, and dessert, but the quality was good.
Mixed Grill and Meat Dishes
The mixed grill offered a generous selection of meat. Gyros, souvlaki, liver, and other grilled items made the plate filling. The seasoning was usually clear, and the dish worked well with tzatziki and potatoes. The pork medallions in cognac sauce were rich and satisfying. The mixed grill was not equally strong on every visit and once felt closer to average.
Pita and Gluten Free Bread
The gluten free pita is one of the main reasons to return. It was not dry and paired very well with tzatziki, Greek farmer salad, and starters. The garlic pita had a bold flavor. On one visit, the garlic was too dominant, and the starter plate was too oily.
Starter Plate and Salad
The starter plate was good for sharing. Tzatziki, peppers, cheese, and pita made the beginning of the meal enjoyable. The Greek farmer salad was fresh and paired well with heavier meat dishes. I did not like that bread or salad could be charged separately instead of being included by default.
Roasted Potatoes and Sides
The roasted potato slices worked well with gyros and grilled meat. When they were seasoned properly, they were a good side dish. On one visit, they lacked salt and seasoning, which made them weaker than the main dish.
Mango Tiramisu and Desserts
The mango tiramisu was my favorite dessert. It was sweet without being heavy and worked well after grilled meat or seafood. The chocolate souffle and homemade desserts were also satisfying. Espresso, Greek coffee, and ouzo made the meal feel complete.
Gluten Free Dining
Wide Selection
The gluten free selection is the biggest strength of Taverna Naxos. Many dishes were gluten free, and dishes containing gluten were marked on the menu. Gluten free pita, gluten free bread, fried dishes, and desserts made the choice much easier. For people with celiac disease, this restaurant is highly recommended.
Good for Mixed Groups
The restaurant is worth visiting even without dietary restrictions. Gyros, moussaka, seafood, pita, and desserts tasted good on their own. This makes it a good choice for groups where some people need gluten free food and others do not.
Waiting Time and Reservations
Lunch Visit
Lunch was more relaxed. The food arrived faster, and the lunch menu offered good value. The grill plate and fish plate were filling and reasonably priced for Munich.
Dinner Visit
For dinner, I recommend making a reservation. The restaurant filled up quickly, and the waiting time became longer. On one visit, the food took around 45 to 60 minutes. The staff remained friendly, but the wait was a clear negative point.
Cost and Payment
Price Level
A lighter meal was possible for around 10 to 20 euros per person. A regular dinner was usually closer to 20 to 30 euros. With seafood, wine, starters, and dessert, 30 to 40 euros or more was realistic. For Munich, the prices were generally fair, although some portions could have been larger.
Payment Method
During my visits, it was best to bring cash or an EC card. Standard credit cards such as Visa, Mastercard, and Amex were not reliable. This is a real downside and should be considered before visiting.
Parking and Access
Parking
Parking was not always easy. There were a few spaces behind the restaurant and free street parking nearby, but available spots were not guaranteed. If you arrive by car, it is better to allow extra time.
Public Transport
Public transport is a better option for a relaxed visit. The restaurant is reachable by nearby S Bahn and bus connections. If you want to avoid parking stress, I recommend using public transport.
Service and Atmosphere
Staff Friendliness
The staff was very friendly and attentive during my visits. Questions about gluten free dishes were answered confidently. The staff checked on the table during the meal and stayed welcoming even when the restaurant was busy.
Host and Team
The host and team gave the restaurant a warm and personal atmosphere. The service was attentive and did not feel mechanical. This is one of the reasons the restaurant stayed memorable.
Indoor Area and Terrace
The indoor area was clean, bright, and pleasant. The terrace and winter garden were especially enjoyable. On busy evenings, however, the dining room became tight and loud. For a quieter meal, it is better to visit earlier or reserve ahead.
Restroom and Family Visit
Restroom
Restrooms were available. The men’s restroom was small but clean and suitable for the size of the restaurant. It was acceptable for a normal restaurant visit.
Family Friendly Setting
Taverna Naxos is suitable for families. High chairs, paper, and coloring pencils were available. The staff treated families kindly, so the restaurant works well for a meal with children.
Pros and Cons
Pros
The biggest strengths are the good food, wide gluten free selection, friendly service, and fair prices for Munich. Gyros, moussaka, baby calamari, fish platter, gluten free pita, and mango tiramisu were especially worth ordering.
Cons
The main downsides are difficult parking, limited card payment, possible waiting times at dinner, and a loud indoor area when full. Some dishes were too oily, too garlicky, or under seasoned on certain visits. Extra costs for bread or salad should also be expected.
Satisfaction and Revisit Intention
Overall Satisfaction
My overall satisfaction was high. The weaknesses were real, but the food, service, and gluten free selection were stronger. For Greek food in the western part of Munich, Taverna Naxos is a good choice.
Recommendation
I recommend ordering gyros, moussaka, baby calamari, gluten free pita, and mango tiramisu. Anyone who needs gluten free food should seriously consider this restaurant. If you arrive by car, plan extra time for parking.
Revisit Intention
I would visit Taverna Naxos again. For the next visit, I would reserve a table, bring cash or an EC card, and avoid the busiest dinner time. With those points prepared, it is one of the better Greek restaurants in Munich Pasing Obermenzing.
