Review Summary
Final Impression After Several Visits
Steinheil 16 is one of the strongest places I visited in Munich-Maxvorstadt for a large, satisfying schnitzel meal. Across several visits, the main strengths were the huge schnitzel portions, crisp breading, filling potato sides, quick kitchen pace, and lively local atmosphere. I paid €17.90 for the pork schnitzel with potatoes, €16.90 for the soy schnitzel, and €36.40 for a meal that included schnitzel and currywurst. If I had to recommend only one dish, I recommend the pork schnitzel Wiener Art. It gives the clearest picture of what this restaurant does best. The weak points are the tight seating, loud room, difficult parking, and occasional inconsistency during busy service. Current prices, waiting times, and on-site conditions may differ depending on the visit.
Waiting Time and Seating
Reservation and Wait
A reservation is the safest way to visit Steinheil 16. On some visits, I was seated right away, especially outside peak meal times. On busier weekend and dinner visits, getting a table without a reservation was much harder. Once, I waited more than 30 minutes before being seated. The restaurant is small and popular, so a spontaneous visit can work, but it is not something I would rely on during lunch or dinner rush.
Dining Room and Noise
The dining room is compact, busy, and energetic. Tables are close together, and the room becomes loud when full. This is not the place for a quiet, slow dinner. It works better as a lively schnitzel-and-beer restaurant where the atmosphere is part of the meal. The noise was strong, but conversation was still possible.
Food Ordered and Prices
Pork Schnitzel Wiener Art
The pork schnitzel Wiener Art was the best dish I ordered at Steinheil 16. I paid €17.90 for the pork schnitzel with a potato side. The portion was enormous, the meat was thin, and the breading was crisp on the better visits. The inside stayed tender, while the outside had the crunchy texture I wanted from a proper schnitzel. This plate is filling enough on its own, and I did not need a starter.
Weaker Schnitzel Visits
Not every schnitzel visit was perfect. On one visit, the schnitzel was too greasy and under-seasoned. On another visit, the meat was slightly dry. Steinheil 16 is strongest as a generous, good-value schnitzel restaurant rather than a refined fine-dining schnitzel spot. Anyone expecting a delicate gourmet version may leave less impressed. Anyone arriving hungry for a huge plate will likely enjoy it much more.
Potatoes and Salad
The potato sides were a major part of the meal. The fried potatoes were crisp at the edges and soft inside. The potato salad worked especially well with the schnitzel because it balanced the heavier fried meat. The side salad varied more. On one visit, it was fresh and pleasant; on another visit, it was plain and weaker than the rest of the plate. Overall, the potatoes were much better than the salad.
Turkey Schnitzel
The turkey schnitzel was lighter than the pork version. With a drink, the meal came to €20–30 per person. The meat had a milder flavor, while the breading still stayed crisp. It is a good option for someone who wants a less heavy schnitzel. For a first visit, I still recommend the pork schnitzel because it represents the restaurant better.
Soy Schnitzel
I paid €16.90 for the soy schnitzel. The portion was large, the breading was crisp, and the plate came with potatoes and salad. For a vegetarian dish, it was filling and well executed. It did not have the same depth as the pork schnitzel, but it was a strong option for non-meat eaters.
Currywurst
On the visit when I ordered schnitzel and currywurst, the total bill came to €36.40. The currywurst had a bold sauce and paired well with beer. It was on the salty side, so I would not order it as a heavy extra dish next to a full schnitzel unless sharing. As a side dish for the table, it works well.
Goulash and Spätzle
The goulash with spätzle came to €20–30 per person on my visit. The sauce was rich, warm, and filling. The spätzle held the sauce well and made the dish very satisfying. For anyone who does not want schnitzel, this is one of the better alternatives on the menu.
Käsespätzle and Nachos
The Käsespätzle was rich and heavy. The cheese flavor was strong, but the dish became too much after a while. It works as a main dish, but I would not combine it with a schnitzel. The nachos were easier to share and worked better as a casual beer snack. After trying different dishes, I still see Steinheil 16 mainly as a schnitzel restaurant.
If Ordering Only One Dish
Recommended Dish: Pork Schnitzel Wiener Art
If I had to pick only one dish, I recommend the pork schnitzel Wiener Art. For €17.90, it delivers size, crispness, and a filling meal with potatoes and salad. It is the dish that best explains the popularity of Steinheil 16. Anyone with a smaller appetite should share one plate or take the leftovers away.
Payment, Service, and Comfort
Payment Method
Card payment was available. I did not have to rely only on cash. Tips were not forced. On a visit with very good service, I added around 10% tip. Depending on the order, my meal ended at €10–20 per person on lighter visits and €20–30 per person when adding drinks or extra dishes.
Staff Friendliness
The staff were usually friendly, fast, and attentive. Orders were handled efficiently even when the restaurant was full, and ordering in English was not a problem. The service was generally welcoming and practical. However, during one busy visit, clearing the table took too long. On another visit, the explanation around takeaway box charges was not clear enough. Overall, the service is good, but peak hours bring some inconsistency.
Food Serving Speed
When I was seated without delay, the food came out quickly. Drinks and salad often arrived first, followed by the main dish. During packed dinner service, the wait for food was much longer. This is not the best place for a rushed dinner without a reservation. With a booking and enough time, the experience is much better.
Parking and Restroom
Parking
Parking is a weak point. The area mainly has paid street parking, and empty spaces are not easy to find. Driving there requires extra time. Public transport or walking is the better choice.
Restroom
A restroom is available inside the restaurant. It was accessible without difficulty, though the interior is tight. On one visit, there was graffiti on the restroom door, which weakened the overall impression. For normal use, the restroom was fine.
Pros and Cons
Pros
The biggest advantage is the large schnitzel portion at a clear price. For €17.90, the pork schnitzel is a full, satisfying meal with potatoes and salad. The staff are generally friendly, the kitchen is often quick, and the atmosphere has a strong local energy. Vegetarian options also make the restaurant useful for mixed groups.
Cons
The main drawbacks are tight seating, loud noise, difficult parking, and the need for a reservation at popular times. The schnitzel was not perfect every time. One visit had too much grease, and another had slightly dry meat. The salad and Käsespätzle were also less impressive than the main schnitzel.
Satisfaction and Revisit Intention
Overall Satisfaction
My overall satisfaction is 4.3 out of 5. Steinheil 16 is not perfect, but it is a very strong restaurant for large schnitzel portions, fair pricing, and a lively meal in Munich-Maxvorstadt. The best visits were excellent, and the weaker points do not erase the strength of the pork schnitzel.
Revisit Intention
I would visit Steinheil 16 again. Next time, I would reserve in advance and avoid the busiest hours. For a first visit, I recommend the pork schnitzel Wiener Art with a potato side. Anyone who does not eat much should share one plate.
Location Description
Between the Pinakothek and Königsplatz
Steinheil 16 is located in Maxvorstadt, between the Pinakothek area and Königsplatz. From Alte Pinakothek, walk toward Gabelsbergerstraße and continue into the quieter side-street area. From Königsplatz, walk north through the museum quarter. Josephsplatz is also a convenient U-Bahn starting point. The location works well for a meal after visiting the museums or walking through the university district.
