Visiting Restaurant The Spice Bazaar

A memorable restaurant in central Munich

Restaurant The Spice Bazaar is the kind of place I choose for a special evening in Munich rather than a quick casual meal. Its location in Altstadt-Lehel, close to the Bavarian State Opera, Munich Residenz, and Marstallplatz, already gives the visit a refined setting. Inside, the restaurant feels warm, stylish, and full of character, with soft lighting, detailed decor, and the clear presence of spices from the kitchen. After visiting more than once, the main impression stayed the same: this is a restaurant made for sharing, tasting, and spending time at the table. The food combines Mediterranean and oriental influences, with bold spices, colorful plates, and many dishes that work best when shared. Current menu items, prices, seating, and on-site conditions may differ.

Waiting Time and Reservation

Little waiting with a reservation

A reservation made the visit much smoother. When I arrived with a booking, the staff checked the name and guided me to the table without a long wait. In the evening, the restaurant filled up quickly, so arriving without a reservation was not the best idea. For a date, a family dinner, a business meal, or dinner before a performance nearby, booking ahead was the right choice.

Waiting after ordering

The first dishes arrived at a comfortable pace. On busier evenings, the wait was a little longer, but it did not disturb the meal. Since many dishes are made for sharing, the food comes out gradually and the dinner naturally lasts longer. I also appreciated that the staff helped with portion sizes. When the order was too large, they explained it clearly and helped adjust it. That made the meal easier and also prevented unnecessary spending.

Cost and Payment

Price per person

Restaurant The Spice Bazaar is clearly in the higher price range. A lighter meal with a few shared dishes and a drink can stay around €50 to €60 per person, but a full dinner with starters, main dishes, sides, dessert, and drinks can easily reach €70 to €100 per person. With wine or cocktails, the total rises further. It is not an everyday-budget restaurant, but for a special dinner in central Munich, the price level fits the overall experience.

Payment process

The bill was requested at the table and paid by card. The process was smooth and professional. It is worth checking the menu carefully because some main dishes do not include sides. Once bread, potatoes, vegetables, or extra sides are added, the final bill increases quickly. The food is good, but ordering with attention makes the meal more satisfying.

Parking

Parking nearby is not easy

Parking is one of the weaker parts of the visit. The restaurant is in central Munich, so finding a convenient parking space directly nearby was difficult. Relying on street parking right next to the restaurant was not realistic during busy times. A paid garage or paid parking nearby was the better option.

Public transport is easier

The area around Odeonsplatz, Munich Residenz, and the Bavarian State Opera is easy to reach by public transport. For that reason, arriving without a car was more convenient. If driving, it is better to arrive early and leave extra time for parking. The central location is a major advantage for the meal, but not for parking.

Food Review by Item Type

Bread, hummus, and dips

The bread and dips were a strong start to the meal. The bread came warm, smelled fresh, and worked beautifully with hummus, muhammara, and other spreads. The hummus was creamy and well seasoned without being heavy. Muhammara added a deeper, nuttier, slightly spicy flavor. These were not simple side items; they were good enough to be part of the main reason to visit. With bread and dips alone, the meal already started well.

Shared starters

The starters were the strongest part of the menu for me. Falafel, meatballs, burnt eggplant, Bazaar Parmigiana, and Pimientos de Padrón each had their own personality. The falafel had a firm outside and a soft inside, with a spice profile that stayed on the palate. The meatballs were juicy and deeply seasoned. Burnt eggplant was creamy, smoky, and excellent with bread. The Pimientos de Padrón were more interesting than the usual simple salt-and-oil version. With a few people at the table, ordering several starters and sharing them was the best way to enjoy the restaurant.

Fish and seafood

The fish and seafood dishes were flavorful and nicely presented. Ceviche brought freshness and acidity between richer dishes. Skrei in coconut curry was tender, mild, and still intense enough to work as a main dish. The coconut, spices, and fish matched well. Seafood depends heavily on timing and temperature, so when these dishes came out right, they were excellent.

Chicken and meat dishes

Berbere chicken, chicken skewers, lamb dishes, and shawarma-style items showed the bolder side of the kitchen. The chicken was deeply seasoned and far more interesting than a standard grilled dish. The lamb had a rich taste and worked well with the sauces. At the same time, some meat dishes felt expensive, especially when sides had to be added separately. The flavor was strong, but ordering carefully made sense.

Vegetarian dishes and sides

Vegetarian dining was one of the restaurant’s strengths. Bazaar Parmigiana, cauliflower, baked sweet potato, broccoli, and the various dips were not secondary choices. They worked as full dishes. The baked sweet potato was especially memorable because the sweetness, spices, and toppings came together very well. The cauliflower was bold and sometimes quite acidic, but it still showed that vegetables were treated as proper dishes rather than simple sides. A full vegetarian meal here felt easy and satisfying.

Desserts and drinks

For dessert, Oriental Mess, black sesame ice cream, and the cornbread dessert stood out. Oriental Mess was sweet without being too heavy. Black sesame ice cream added a nutty finish after the stronger savory dishes. The cornbread dessert was creative and surprisingly enjoyable. The beetroot sorbet with smoked paprika was more unusual and not my favorite. Drinks were also a strong point. The Spicy Ginger Mule was fresh, lightly spicy, and not too sweet. Cocktails with cardamom or gin also matched the restaurant’s style well.

Staff Friendliness and Service

Attentive and helpful service

The service was one of the biggest reasons I enjoyed returning. The staff greeted guests warmly, explained dishes, helped with choices, and gave useful advice about how much to order. In a restaurant with many shared plates, that kind of guidance matters. They did not just take the order; they helped shape the meal.

Small delays on busy evenings

On very busy nights, there were moments when drinks or the bill took longer. The room also became louder when all tables were full. Still, the staff remained friendly and professional. Overall, the service was clearly above average and matched the restaurant’s higher price level.

Restroom

Clean restroom available

The restaurant had restrooms available, and they were clean and well maintained. The restroom area matched the overall standard of the restaurant. During a longer dinner, it was easy to use without inconvenience. For a restaurant in this category, that is expected, and here it was handled well.

Atmosphere and Seating

Stylish indoor dining room

The dining room felt modern, warm, and oriental-inspired. The lighting, wall details, and colors created a refined but relaxed atmosphere. It worked very well for a date. It also suited group dinners because so many dishes are designed for sharing.

Terrace and group dining

The terrace was a strong advantage in good weather. It felt more relaxed than expected for such a central location. The restaurant works well for two people, but the concept becomes even better with four to six guests. With several starters, sides, and mains in the middle of the table, the meal becomes more varied and more enjoyable.

Pros

Creative food

The biggest advantage was the creativity of the food. The dishes did not taste generic. Spices played a major role, but the food was not simply hot or aggressive. Many plates were colorful, carefully presented, and full of flavor.

Strong service

The service was another major strength. The staff were friendly, helpful, and attentive. Their menu advice made the meal easier, especially when ordering shared dishes.

Cons

High prices

The main downside was the price level. Some dishes justified the price, while others felt expensive once extra sides were added. Meat dishes in particular can become costly. For a better value, focusing on starters and vegetarian dishes worked well.

Parking and noise

Parking was difficult, and the dining room became louder during peak hours. For a quiet dinner, choosing the right time and asking for a suitable table when booking made a difference.

Overall Satisfaction

Impression after several visits

After several visits, Restaurant The Spice Bazaar remained a high-quality restaurant with strong service and a distinctive kitchen. Not every dish was equally perfect, but the full meal felt special each time. The starters, dips, vegetarian dishes, cocktails, and desserts were the most memorable parts for me.

Best for these occasions

The restaurant is a good fit for couples, groups, family dinners, business meals, and special evenings in Munich. Anyone who enjoys sharing plates, trying different flavors, and spending time over dinner will enjoy it. Anyone looking for a fast, simple, inexpensive meal should choose a different place.

Revisit Intention

I would return

I would visit Restaurant The Spice Bazaar again. Next time, I would focus on several starters, bread, hummus, Bazaar Parmigiana, baked sweet potato, maybe one fish dish, and Oriental Mess or black sesame ice cream for dessert. Because of the price, it remains a special-occasion restaurant for me, but for that purpose it is a very strong choice.

Location Guide

Near the Bavarian State Opera and Munich Residenz

Restaurant The Spice Bazaar is easiest to find by using the Bavarian State Opera, Munich Residenz, and Marstallplatz as reference points. From the Bavarian State Opera, walk toward Alfons-Goppel-Straße and continue toward Marstallplatz. From Munich Residenz or the Cuvilliés Theatre, it is also a short walk. From Odeonsplatz, walk past the Residenz and Hofgarten area toward Marstallplatz. The restaurant is slightly tucked into this area rather than standing directly on a major road, so Marstallplatz is the best landmark to use.
