I visited more than once, and the experience changed depending on the time of day. Prices, waiting time, seating, service pace, and menu availability may vary by visit.

Waiting Time and Seating

Lunchtime Wait

At lunchtime, the wait was short. On quieter visits, I was seated right away, and on busier visits, the wait was around five to ten minutes. Considering how close the restaurant is to Frauenkirche and Marienplatz, the lunch entry was convenient.

Dinner Wait

Dinner required more planning. I managed to get a table without a reservation on some evenings, but the restaurant was often very busy. On weekends and during peak dinner hours, booking ahead was the better choice. Without a reservation, I had to accept whatever table was available, including upstairs seating.

Dining Room Atmosphere

Pizzarei has two floors. The upstairs area was especially pleasant, and a window seat gave a nice view toward Frauenkirche. The interior was warm, modern, and comfortable. However, tables were placed fairly close together, so the restaurant became noticeably loud when large groups came in.

Price Per Person

During my visits, the usual cost was around €20–30 per person for a main dish and a drink. With starters, dessert, or additional drinks, the total moved closer to €30–40 per person. A fuller dinner with several shared plates could cost more.

Value for Money

For central Munich, the value was reasonable. Pizza and pinsa gave the best balance between price and portion size. Some pasta dishes tasted good but were less filling than the pizzas or pinsas. For a hungry visit, pinsa, pizza, or lasagna was the better choice.

Payment was handled after the meal through the staff. Card payment was available, but carrying some cash was still useful. On busy evenings, it took a little longer to pay, while on calmer visits the process was quick. I checked the final amount carefully before confirming payment.

Parking was inconvenient. Because the restaurant sits deep in Munich’s old town, finding a spot directly nearby was difficult. The surrounding area had heavy pedestrian traffic and limited street parking.

Best Way to Get There

The easiest way was to arrive by public transport at Marienplatz and walk from there. Anyone arriving by car should plan a paid parking garage in advance. Searching for a spontaneous parking spot right next to the restaurant was not a good plan.

Accessibility

The ground floor was easier to access than the upper floor. Anyone who wants to avoid stairs should ask for a ground-floor table when entering. With a stroller or larger bags, the lower level was also more practical.

Food by Item

Pizza

Pizza was one of the most reliable choices at Pizzarei. The dough was on the thicker side, with a soft and airy edge. The Margherita had plenty of cheese and suited anyone who likes a rich, generous pizza. The Prosciutto e Funghi had a good mix of salty ham, mushrooms, and tomato sauce. One pizza with a starter could easily be enough for two light eaters.

Pinsa

The pinsa was even better than the standard pizza for my taste. It had a crisp base and a lighter bite. Toppings such as tuna, vegetables, or burrata worked very well with the dough. If the pizza feels too thick, the pinsa is the better option.

Pasta

The pasta varied by dish. Penne Arrabiata had good heat and a balanced tomato sauce. Penne Alfredo was creamy and mild, though the portion was not especially large. Spaghetti Bolognese and Napolitana were decent, but they did not stand out as much as the pinsa or lasagna.

Lasagna

The lasagna was a strong main dish. It arrived hot, with a good balance of sauce, cheese, and pasta layers. The meat sauce had enough depth to make it satisfying as a full meal. I would order it again when wanting something warmer and heavier than pizza.

Ravioli

The ravioli was one of the better pasta choices. The truffle ravioli had a rich sauce and a clear aroma. The portion was not huge, but the flavor made it worthwhile. Spinach and ricotta ravioli was softer and lighter, making it a good choice for a less heavy meal.

Salad and Starters

The salads were better than expected. A salad with baked goat cheese worked especially well because the warm cheese balanced the fresh vegetables. Bruschetta had good bread texture, though I would have liked a stronger garlic note. As a side to pizza or pinsa, the starters made sense.

Dessert and Drinks

Tiramisu was a pleasant way to end the meal, though it was creamier and less coffee-forward than I expected. Hot cocoa was enjoyable on a cold day. Coffee was fine, but the main reason to visit Pizzarei remained the savory dishes.

Vegetarian choices were easy to find. Pizza, pinsa, salads, and some pasta dishes worked well without meat. Gluten-free pizza and pasta were also available, which made the restaurant easier to visit with people who have different dietary needs.

Service was mostly friendly, quick, and attentive. The welcome at the entrance was pleasant, orders were taken without much delay, and the food usually arrived quickly. For a restaurant in central Munich, that speed was a real advantage.

Strong Service Moments

On several visits, the staff gave helpful recommendations and handled requests well. Some servers added a warm Italian touch to the meal, and table checks were frequent enough without becoming intrusive. Good service clearly improved the overall visit.

Weaker Service Moments

During peak hours, service was less consistent. Paying sometimes took longer, and extra requests required more effort. On very busy evenings, the staff seemed rushed. Even so, service remained one of the restaurant’s stronger points overall.

Cleanliness and Use

Restrooms were available and clean during my visits. They were easy enough to use when seated upstairs as well. The cleanliness was better than expected for such a busy central restaurant.

Waiting During Peak Hours

The number of restrooms felt limited compared with the size of the restaurant. During busy periods, there was sometimes a wait, especially for the women’s restroom. This was one of the clearer downsides of the place.

Excellent Central Location

The location between Frauenkirche and Marienplatz was excellent. It was easy to visit after sightseeing, shopping, or walking through the old town. For travelers with limited time in Munich, the location was very practical.

Fast Food Service

Food came out quickly and hot. Pizza, pinsa, and pasta did not take long, even when the restaurant was busy. This made Pizzarei useful for a satisfying meal without spending the whole evening there.

Strong Pinsa and Good Pizza

The pinsa was the biggest reason I would return. It was light, crisp, and well topped. Pizza was also good, especially for anyone who likes a larger, cheesier style.

Friendly Staff

The staff was generally warm and active. Seating, ordering, recommendations, and serving were handled efficiently. That friendliness made the meal more enjoyable.

Noise During Dinner

Dinner could get loud. The tables were close together, and large groups made quiet conversation harder. For a calmer meal, lunch or early evening was the better choice.

Difficult Parking

Parking was not convenient. The central location is great for pedestrians but not ideal for drivers. Planning a nearby paid parking garage in advance is the safer option.

Dishes Were Not Equally Strong

Not every dish was at the same level. Pinsa, pizza, lasagna, and ravioli were stronger than some simpler pasta dishes. First-time visitors should focus on those stronger options.

Limited Restroom Capacity

The restroom situation was not ideal when the restaurant was full. The wait for the women’s restroom was a noticeable drawback.

Pizzarei was a good Italian restaurant in Munich Altstadt, especially for pizza, pinsa, and a quick warm meal in the city center. It was not a silent fine-dining restaurant, but rather a lively place for good Italian food close to major landmarks. For that purpose, it worked very well.

Would I Visit Again?

I would visit Pizzarei again. Next time, I would try to reserve and ask for an upstairs or window table. I would order pinsa, lasagna, or ravioli first, with a salad or starter to share. For a meal near Frauenkirche and Marienplatz, Pizzarei remains a reliable choice.

Pizzarei is located southeast of Frauenkirche in a small area between the central old-town lanes. From the church square, walk toward Marienplatz and enter the restaurant-filled side area. Nearby places such as Andechser am Dom and Zum Stiftl make it easy to identify the area without relying on the exact address.

From Marienplatz

From Marienplatz, walk toward Frauenkirche. After a few minutes, the area becomes slightly calmer than the busiest shopping streets. Pizzarei sits in that central but slightly tucked-away spot, making it convenient without feeling directly exposed to the busiest square.
