Review Summary
Overall Impression
Metzgerwirt is a traditional Bavarian restaurant that works especially well before or after visiting Nymphenburg Palace and the nearby canal. After several visits, the main strengths were clear: cozy interiors, generous portions, fresh beer, and classic dishes such as Münchner Schnitzel, roast pork, pork knuckle, Käsespätzle, and Kaiserschmarrn. The experience was not perfect every time. During busy hours and group visits, service could become slow, and a few dishes, especially duck and some side dishes, were uneven. Still, for Bavarian food near the palace, this is a restaurant I would consider again.
Visit Timing Notice
This review is based on multiple personal visits. Menu availability, prices, waiting time, seating, and service may vary depending on the day and restaurant conditions.
Waiting Time Price Payment
Waiting Time
On quieter visits, especially early in the day or outside peak lunch hours, I was seated without waiting. Food also arrived quickly on several occasions. During busier periods or with larger groups, the experience was slower. There were visits when ordering took too long, and paying the bill also required patience. For two to four people, the visit felt much easier. For larger groups, I recommend booking ahead and confirming the desired dishes in advance.
Price and Payment
A normal meal usually cost around €20–30 per person. A simple stop for coffee, tea, or dessert could stay closer to €1–10, while a full meal with meat, beer, and dessert could reach €30–40 or more. Considering the location near Nymphenburg Palace, the prices were acceptable. I paid on site after the meal.
Parking
Parking was one of the weaker points. Finding a convenient space nearby was not always easy, and at busy times it required extra time. For a palace visit combined with lunch or dinner, public transport or walking is the better choice.
Food Review
Münchner Schnitzel
The Münchner Schnitzel was one of the best dishes I had here. The breading was crisp, the meat was thin, and the subtle mustard note made it more interesting than a standard schnitzel. It worked very well with potato salad or fried potatoes. A few visits were slightly drier than others, but overall this is one of the safest dishes to order at Metzgerwirt.
Roast Pork
The roast pork was satisfying when the meat was tender and the gravy was rich. With potato dumplings and cabbage, it delivered the classic Bavarian comfort-food experience. However, it was not flawless every time. On one visit, the meat was dry and the crust was too hard. The dumplings also lacked freshness on one occasion. I would still order it again, but the quality was not completely consistent.
Pork Knuckle and Duck
The pork knuckle was a strong choice because of the crispy skin and large portion. It paired well with beer and cabbage. The duck was more inconsistent. On a good visit, the skin was crisp and the flavor was rich. On another visit, the meat was dry and tough. Anyone visiting specifically for duck should confirm availability and preparation time before ordering, especially with a group.
Käsespätzle and Vegetarian Options
The Käsespätzle were enjoyable when the cheese flavor came through properly, but one visit was too bland. Vegetarian options were available, including Käsespätzle, salads, mushroom dishes, and tofu schnitzel. For a traditional Bavarian restaurant, that was a positive point. Still, the vegetarian selection was smaller than the meat section, so vegetarian guests should check the menu before settling in.
Kaiserschmarrn and Desserts
The Kaiserschmarrn was one of the highlights. It was warm, sweet, lightly browned on the outside, and soft inside. The portion was large enough to share, making it a good dessert after a heavy meal. On one visit, it was too greasy, but I would still recommend trying it. Apple desserts, hot chocolate, coffee, and tea also worked well for a lighter stop.
Beer and Drinks
The Augustiner beer was cold, fresh, and an excellent match for the heavier Bavarian dishes. It went especially well with schnitzel, roast pork, and pork knuckle. The homemade lemonade was refreshing, and warm drinks were a good choice after walking around the palace area in colder weather.
Service Restroom Atmosphere
Service
Most of the service I experienced was friendly, helpful, and efficient. The English menu made ordering easier, and several staff members handled international guests well. That said, service was not always equally smooth. On some visits, staff were distant, slow, or difficult to reach. During busy hours, the dining room could feel understaffed.
Restroom
Restrooms were available. On one visit they were very clean, while on another they felt older and less well maintained. Accessibility can be an issue because stairs may be involved. The restaurant has many seating areas, but the restroom situation is worth considering for guests with mobility limitations.
Indoor and Outdoor Seating
The interior is traditional, cozy, and larger than it looks from outside. The dining rooms and winter garden give the place a strong Bavarian character. Outdoor seating is pleasant in good weather, but tables near the road can be noisy. For a calmer meal, I would choose an indoor table.
Pros Cons Satisfaction
Pros
The biggest strengths are the location, the Bavarian atmosphere, and the classic food. It is very convenient after visiting Nymphenburg Palace, and the menu includes the dishes most visitors want from a Bavarian restaurant. Portions are generous, the beer is good, and desserts such as Kaiserschmarrn make the meal more memorable. It is also a suitable place for families and small groups.
Cons
The main drawbacks are inconsistent service speed, difficult parking, and uneven results with some dishes. During busy periods, waiting can become frustrating. Duck, dumplings, vegetables, and Käsespätzle were not always at the same level. Outdoor seats near the road are also less comfortable for anyone wanting a quiet meal.
Satisfaction and Revisit Intention
Overall, I was satisfied with Metzgerwirt and would visit again. I would choose a smaller group and avoid the busiest hours. For a first visit, I recommend ordering Münchner Schnitzel, roast pork, Augustiner beer, and Kaiserschmarrn to share. For groups or duck dishes, I recommend reserving ahead and confirming availability before arrival.
Location Guide
Getting There near Nymphenburg Palace
Metzgerwirt is easy to combine with Schloss Nymphenburg, the palace canal, the Botanical Garden, and the Museum Mensch und Natur. From the palace grounds, walk toward Menzinger Straße and the canal-side road leading into the residential area. It is also convenient from Romanplatz by following the main direction toward the palace and canal. Public transport is the better option than driving, especially because parking nearby can be difficult.
