Review Summary

Overall impression after several visits

Liebighof is a Bavarian restaurant in Munich Altstadt-Lehel near Lehel Station. After several visits for both lunch and dinner, the strongest impression was clear: generous portions, hearty German food, a cozy Bavarian pub atmosphere, and generally fair value for the area. The schnitzel, Kaiserschmarrn, Zwiebelrostbraten, and potato dishes were the most memorable choices.

Main strengths and weaknesses

The main strengths are the portion size, the warm interior, the beer, and the classic Bavarian dishes. A typical meal often landed around €20–30 per person, while lighter lunch options could be closer to €10–20. However, the restaurant was not flawless. It can get loud and tight when full, and the service varied from excellent to rather cold depending on the visit. Some dishes also had weaker points: the house burger bun broke apart, the Kraftbrühe was disappointing, and the Zwiebelrostbraten had great meat but not always enough sauce or crisp onions.

Atmosphere and Visit Timing

Bavarian pub atmosphere

Liebighof has a traditional Bavarian pub feel with wood, warm lighting, and strong seasonal decoration. During winter, the festive decoration made the room feel especially memorable. The place is relatively small, which adds charm, but it also means the seating can feel cramped when the restaurant is full.

Lunch and dinner visits

Lunch was easier. On several lunch visits, I got seated quickly, and the food arrived without a long wait. Dinner was much busier. Without a reservation, getting a table can be uncertain, and bar seating or a tight table may be offered. For dinner, booking ahead is the better option.

Noise level

The noise level depended heavily on the time. On quieter visits, conversation was easy. On busy evenings, the restaurant became loud, and at times it was hard to hear clearly. Anyone looking for a calmer meal should visit earlier in the day or avoid peak dinner hours.

Prices and Ordering

Cost per person

The price level is reasonable for Munich. A simple lunch can be around €10–20 per person. A standard meal with a main dish and drink is more commonly around €20–30. Steak dishes, seasonal specials, multiple drinks, or dessert can push the total toward €30–50 or more.

Menu price examples

The Black Angus Zwiebelrostbraten was €29.90 and felt fair for the meat quality. The XXL schnitzel lunch special at €12 was one of the strongest value options. A schnitzel with a glass of wine came to around €28. Seasonal dishes were much more expensive, such as asparagus with ham at €34.80 and asparagus with a small veal schnitzel at €41.80.

Payment

Card payment was available, including EC card. The payment process was simple, and there was no uncomfortable pressure around tipping.

Food Review by Dish

Schnitzel with fried potatoes

The schnitzel is one of the safest choices at Liebighof. It was large, crisp, and filling. The fried potatoes were a real highlight, with good browning, a savory taste, and a strong match with the meat. For a first visit, Wiener Schnitzel with fried potatoes is the dish I would recommend first.

Zwiebelrostbraten

The Zwiebelrostbraten was strongest in the meat itself. The Black Angus beef was tender, cooked well, and rich in flavor. At €29.90, it made sense for the quality. Still, the dish was not perfect every time. On one visit, the onions were not crisp enough, and the sauce was too thin and too small in amount. The beef was excellent, but the sauce and onions needed better execution.

House burger with fries

The house burger tasted fine, but it was not convenient to eat. The bun crumbled, so I had to use a knife and fork. For a burger, that is a clear weakness. The fries, however, were crisp and well seasoned. I would not choose the burger first, but the fries were good.

Kaiserschmarrn and Apfelschmarrn

The Kaiserschmarrn was one of the best dishes at Liebighof. It was airy, slightly crisp on the outside, and nicely caramelized. With almonds, apple, applesauce, and vanilla ice cream, it felt rich but not flat. The Apfelschmarrn was also excellent. If there is room after the main dish, this dessert is worth ordering.

Leberknödelsuppe

The Leberknödelsuppe was very good. The broth had depth, and the dumpling made it hearty. It works well as a starter, although it can be filling when paired with a large main course.

Kraftbrühe

The Kraftbrühe did not work for me. The flavor was weak and not enjoyable. If I were ordering soup again at Liebighof, I would choose the Leberknödelsuppe instead.

Chicken salad

The chicken salad was tasty and filling because the portion of chicken was generous. The bread served with it was also good. The weaker point was the vegetable balance. There were many salad leaves, but only a small amount of cucumber and tomato. It looked large, but it did not feel as varied as I expect from a salad.

Meatloaf and meat dishes

The meatloaf was hearty, salty in a good way, and a strong match with beer. The steak dishes were also satisfying. The Black Angus steak arrived at the requested doneness, the pork steak was juicy, and the venison dishes with Spätzle were tender and flavorful. Meat dishes are one of Liebighof’s strengths.

Potato pans and Spezial Pfanne

The potato pans were very filling. The Allgäu-style version with potatoes, onions, mushrooms, bacon, chicken, and cheese was easily large enough to share. The Spezial Pfanne Lieb with potatoes, bacon, onions, Black Angus steak, and eggs was heavy and rich. It is not a light meal, but it works well when very hungry.

Sausages and sauerkraut

The Nürnberger sausages had a strong aroma. With sauerkraut and beer, they fit the setting well, but they are not for everyone. For a first visit, I would choose schnitzel or a potato dish before ordering the sausages.

Beer and bread

The Augustiner Helles matched the food very well. It arrived cold and fresh. The bread was also good, especially with soup, salad, and meat dishes.

Best Dish to Order

My first recommendation

If I could recommend only one dish, it would be Wiener Schnitzel with fried potatoes. It shows the strengths of Liebighof clearly: large portions, crisp preparation, hearty sides, and a satisfying Bavarian meal.

Dessert recommendation

For dessert, I recommend Kaiserschmarrn. It is not just an extra sweet dish; it is one of the main reasons to return. After a heavy main course, it is best shared.

Waiting Time and Reservation

Lunch visit

Lunch was usually smooth. The wait was short, and the food came out at a good pace. For a spontaneous visit, lunch is the easier option.

Dinner visit

Dinner requires more planning. The restaurant fills up quickly, especially on weekends and during festive seasons. Without a reservation, a seat is not guaranteed. Booking ahead makes the visit much more comfortable.

Service

Positive service

On many visits, the staff were friendly, quick, and attentive. Drinks arrived fast, orders were taken efficiently, and the team handled busy periods well. English menus were available, which made ordering easier.

Negative service

Service was not always consistent. On some visits, staff reacted coldly or impatiently to questions. There were also uncomfortable moments around reservations or seating requests. Once, the wrong dish arrived instead of the schnitzel I ordered. These moments affected the overall dining experience.

Parking and Restroom

Parking

Parking is difficult in this area. Paid street parking or paid parking facilities are more realistic than free parking. Coming by U-Bahn is the easier choice.

Restroom

A restroom was available, but the way to it was narrow, especially when the restaurant was full. Wheelchair access and stroller movement are not ideal. The lack of high chairs for children is also a downside for family visits.

Pros and Cons

Pros

The biggest pros are the generous portions, cozy Bavarian atmosphere, good beer, and strong classic dishes. Schnitzel, Kaiserschmarrn, potato dishes, and meat dishes were the highlights. The lunch pricing is especially attractive for Munich.

Cons

The cons are the loud room at peak times, tight seating, difficult parking, and inconsistent service. Not every dish was equally strong. The Kraftbrühe, burger bun, and some details of the Zwiebelrostbraten were weaker than expected.

Satisfaction and Revisit Intention

Overall satisfaction

Overall, Liebighof was a satisfying restaurant. It is not perfect, but it is a very good choice for hearty Bavarian food. Anyone who likes schnitzel, beer, large plates, and a cozy pub setting will likely enjoy it.

Would I return?

I would return. Next time, I would reserve a table and order schnitzel, Zwiebelrostbraten, or Kaiserschmarrn again. I would not prioritize the burger or Kraftbrühe. Current prices, menu details, and crowd levels may vary depending on the visit.

Liebighof is easy to reach from Lehel Station. From the station, the walk leads into the quieter streets of Lehel, away from the busiest parts of the old town. The area feels more local than tourist-heavy.

Nearby landmarks

The Isar, the southern part of the English Garden, Haus der Kunst, and the way toward Maximilianeum are all useful nearby landmarks.
