Review Summary

Overall impression after several visits

Hexengarten Neuhausen is a quiet garden restaurant near Westfriedhof, set inside a green allotment garden area. After several visits, the strongest part of the restaurant is the setting. It is calm, leafy, and well suited for beer, Bavarian food, and a slower meal outside. Schnitzel, roast pork, duck, spareribs, and Kaiserschmarrn were the best choices during my visits. However, the restaurant was not consistent every time. On busy days, food took much longer, orders were missed, and some dishes did not match the price. The service also changed a lot depending on the day. I recommend visiting at lunch or early evening and choosing the classic Bavarian dishes rather than the weaker salad or mixed international options.

Food and Prices

Schnitzel

The Schnitzel Wiener Art cost €14.50. The breading was hot and crisp, and the meat was thin without being fatty. On good visits, this was the safest dish at Hexengarten Neuhausen. The fries were fine, although they were not hot enough on one visit. If I had to choose only one dish here, I recommend the schnitzel. It fits the beer garden setting and delivers the most reliable meal.

Münchner Schnitzel and Obatzda Schnitzel

The Münchner Schnitzel came to a little over €20 with the side dish. The taste was good, but the potato salad portion was too small on one visit. The Obatzda Schnitzel was richer and more savory. The cheese spread added a strong Bavarian flavor, making it a better choice for beer drinkers who want a heavier dish.

Roast pork

The roast pork came within the €10–20 range. When it was good, the meat was tender, the dark sauce was rich, and the potato dumpling worked well with the gravy. This dish can be very satisfying. However, on another visit the meat was too firm and the overall quality was disappointing. Roast pork here depends strongly on the day.

Duck with red cabbage and dumpling

The duck was one of the better dishes. The meat was juicy, the skin had good flavor, and the red cabbage balanced the richness of the duck. The dumpling was best when eaten with plenty of sauce. The only issue was the amount of sauce, which was too small on one visit. I recommend asking for extra sauce when ordering.

Currywurst with fries

The Currywurst with fries cost €8. It was simple, clear, and good for a casual lunch. The sausage was flavorful, the sauce was strong, and the fries were crisp. This is a good choice for a quick beer garden meal.

Käsespätzle and vegetarian dishes

The Käsespätzle with a small salad cost €15.80. The taste was fine, but the price made it less attractive. The grilled vegetables with rosemary potatoes and two dips also cost €15.80. The dish was pleasant, but the portion was too small on one visit. For vegetarian food, I would choose the grilled goat cheese with vegetables instead, because it has more flavor and suits the garden restaurant setting better.

Backhendlsalat

The Backhendlsalat cost between €16.80 and €17.90. This was the weakest dish. The portion was too small, the chicken pieces were too few, and some pieces were overfried. For this price, I expected a proper main-course salad with more substance. I would skip this dish and order schnitzel, duck, or spareribs instead.

Spareribs with potato wedges

The spareribs came within the €20–30 meal range. The meat was tender, the seasoning worked well, and the potato wedges were a good match. The wedges were crisp outside and soft inside. This is a good dish for a longer beer garden meal.

Kaiserschmarrn

The Kaiserschmarrn was an excellent dessert. It came in a pan, with a slightly crisp outside and a soft center. The butter, sugar, and dough worked well together. After a heavy main dish, I recommend sharing the Kaiserschmarrn.

Croatian-style dishes

The Croatian-style dishes were less consistent. The Pljeskavica was too firm on one visit, although the fries were good. The Djuvec rice was also disappointing because it lacked freshness and did not look appealing. At Hexengarten Neuhausen, I would choose Bavarian dishes over the Croatian-style options.

Waiting Time and Ordering

Quiet visits

On quiet visits, there was no wait. I sat down right away, drinks arrived quickly, and the food came without delay. Lunch and early evening were the best times for a calmer meal.

Busy visits

On busy days, the wait was much longer. At one visit, the food took around 30 to 45 minutes. Some dishes did not arrive together, and some orders were missed. During warm weather and weekend peak hours, patience is necessary.

Payment and Cost

Meal cost

For a light meal, I paid around €10–20 per person. With a main dish and drink, the bill was usually in the €20–30 range. With duck, spareribs, or dessert, the total can reach around €30. The price is acceptable for Munich when the dish is good, but small portions and weak salads reduce the value.

Payment method

Girocard or EC card payment was possible. Credit card payment was not available. This is inconvenient, especially for travelers. I recommend bringing cash or a suitable German debit card.

Parking and Accessibility

Parking

Parking was relatively easy. There were free parking options around Westfriedhof and Baldurstraße. From the parking area, I walked about 100 to 150 meters through the green area to reach the restaurant. For Munich, this is convenient.

Accessibility

There was a larger toilet with a changing table. However, wheelchair use may still be difficult because the grab handle was only on one side. The restaurant also sits inside a garden area, so visitors with limited mobility should plan for the short walk.

Service and Atmosphere

Good service

On good visits, the staff were friendly, fast, and attentive. Drinks arrived quickly, small requests were accepted, and group visits were handled well. At those moments, Hexengarten Neuhausen felt like a warm local beer garden.

Inconsistent service

The service was not always reliable. On busy days, the team seemed overwhelmed, orders were forgotten, and some responses were too rough. Larger groups and later dining times can become chaotic. This is the main weakness of the restaurant.

Atmosphere

The atmosphere is one of the best reasons to visit. The restaurant sits quietly in the green, the beer garden has sun and shade, and the small wooden building feels cozy. It is not a loud city-center restaurant. It is best for people who want a calm outdoor meal.

Pros and Cons

Pros

The biggest strengths are the location, the beer garden, the beer selection, and the better Bavarian dishes. Schnitzel, duck, spareribs, roast pork, and Kaiserschmarrn can be very satisfying. Parking is also easier than expected for Munich.

Cons

The weaknesses are inconsistent service, long waits on busy days, and some dishes with poor value for money. I would not choose the Backhendlsalat, some vegetarian dishes, or the Croatian-style dishes first. The lack of credit card payment is also a downside.

Satisfaction and Revisit Intention

Overall satisfaction

My satisfaction at Hexengarten Neuhausen depends heavily on timing and menu choice. With schnitzel, duck, spareribs, or Kaiserschmarrn, the chance of a good meal is high. With salads, late orders, or peak weekend crowds, disappointment is more likely.

Revisit intention

I would visit again, but only at quieter times. For a relaxed beer garden meal near Westfriedhof, Hexengarten Neuhausen is still a good choice. For fast, predictable service, I do not recommend going during weekend peak hours.

Location Description

From Westfriedhof

From Westfriedhof U-Bahn station, walk toward Baldurstraße and continue into the green allotment garden area. The restaurant is not directly on the main road. It sits slightly inside the garden area, so Westfriedhof and Baldurstraße are the easiest landmarks to follow.

From Dantebad

From Dantebad, head toward Dantestraße and then continue toward Baldurstraße. Once you enter the green garden area, the small wooden restaurant and outdoor seating become easy to spot.

Before visiting

Opening times, prices, dishes, and payment options can change depending on the day. In summer and on weekends, it is better to expect more guests and longer waiting times.
