MARGARETE After Several Visits at a Glance
A Modern Restaurant in Central Frankfurt
MARGARETE is a modern restaurant in Frankfurt Innenstadt, close to the Römer, the New Old Town, and the cathedral area. After several visits, the restaurant left a clear impression: stylish urban interiors, a central location, modern regional cooking, a good wine selection, and a price level that sets high expectations. The kitchen can be very satisfying, especially with meat dishes, Frankfurter green sauce, brunch, tasting menus, selected desserts, and wine pairings. At the same time, the experience was not flawless every single time, mainly because service speed, seasoning, and portion size varied depending on the visit.
Who Should Visit
MARGARETE is a good choice for a date, a business dinner, a relaxed meal after sightseeing, a special occasion, or a weekend brunch. It is not the best pick for someone looking for a cheap and quick meal. It works best when you want a stylish restaurant in a very central part of Frankfurt and are ready for higher downtown prices. Current operation, menu items, prices, and seating arrangements may differ from my visit.
Atmosphere and Seating
Stylish Urban Interior
The interior felt modern, clean, and city-oriented. It was not a traditional German tavern, but more of an upscale bistro with a restaurant feel. The lighting was warm, the tables were well arranged, and some seating areas felt more private because of curtains and softer light. For dinner as a couple, this worked especially well. The restaurant had enough character to feel special without becoming overly formal.
Outdoor and Courtyard Seating
The outdoor seats had a pleasant city atmosphere. Sitting outside, I could watch the movement of central Frankfurt while eating or having a drink. Some street-side tables were close to traffic and tram movement, so they were not completely quiet. Still, they were enjoyable for a casual meal or a short stop. The courtyard and inner seating areas were calmer and better for a longer dinner.
Noise Level
The noise level depended on the time of day. Early evenings and quieter weekdays were comfortable for conversation. Busy dinner hours were livelier and sometimes louder. MARGARETE is not a silent fine-dining room; it feels more like a polished city restaurant with movement, conversation, and a relaxed but refined mood. That makes it suitable for guests who want good food without a stiff dining atmosphere.
Waiting Time and Reservation
Waiting Time
With a reservation, I was usually seated quickly. Brunch and earlier visits were also smooth, with little to no waiting. On popular evenings, however, drinks and first courses sometimes took longer. Some visits were efficient, while others required more patience. For a special dinner, it is better not to plan the meal too tightly.
Reservation
I recommend making a reservation for dinner, weekends, Valentine’s Day, brunch, and group meals. The restaurant has many seats, but the better areas can fill quickly. A short spontaneous visit for a drink or snack can work, but a full dinner is more comfortable with a confirmed table.
Cost and Payment
Price Level
MARGARETE is on the higher end for central Frankfurt. A simple drink and snack visit can stay around €10–20 per person. A normal dinner often lands around €30–50 per person. With wine, starters, main courses, desserts, or a tasting menu, the total can easily reach €60–100 or more per person. The Wiener Schnitzel was around €36, and some vegetarian mains were also priced very high. This is not a casual low-cost bistro, even though the atmosphere is relaxed.
Value for Money
The value depended strongly on the dish. When the food was on point, the price felt easier to accept. The Entrecôte, Frankfurter green sauce dishes, brunch, selected menus, and good wine pairings made sense at this level. When seasoning was too mild, portions were small, or drinks arrived late, the high price became more noticeable. MARGARETE is a restaurant where ordering the right dish matters.
Payment
Payment was handled comfortably at the table. Card payment was the easiest option for me, especially when ordering wine, multiple courses, or drinks. For group meals, it is worth checking the bill before paying because drinks and side dishes can raise the total quickly.
Food Review by Item
Wiener Schnitzel with Potato Salad
The Wiener Schnitzel was tasty and neatly prepared. The breading had a pleasant buttery note, the meat was cooked well, and the potato salad worked nicely with it. At this price, however, expectations are high. It was a good schnitzel, but not always the flawless highlight one might expect from a dish at this level. Still, it remains a solid choice for someone wanting a classic main course.
Entrecôte and Steak Dishes
The Entrecôte was one of the stronger dishes. When prepared well, it had good flavor, a satisfying texture, and enough depth for an upscale dinner. It worked especially well with wine. For steak dishes, I recommend clearly stating the preferred doneness and asking about the side dishes before ordering. That makes the meal more reliable.
Frankfurter Green Sauce and Regional Dishes
Frankfurter green sauce was one of the most memorable parts of MARGARETE. It tasted fresh, herbal, and bright, and it paired well with potatoes, meat, and regional plates. This is a good way to try a local Frankfurt flavor in a more modern setting. For a first visit, I recommend ordering at least one dish that includes green sauce.
Fish and Seafood
The fish dishes were generally solid. Fish and chips worked well for a relaxed lunch or casual dinner. Mussels, salmon, and other fish dishes were best when the seasoning and sauce were well balanced. Some fish plates were milder than expected, so guests who prefer stronger flavors should ask about the sauce and preparation before ordering.
Vegetarian and Vegan Options
Vegetarian and vegan options were available, and several dishes were clearly marked. I liked that vegetables were not treated only as side dishes. Some plates showed creative cooking and worked well for guests who do not eat meat. At the same time, some vegetarian mains were expensive, and a mild dish at that price can feel disappointing. Vegetarian guests should ask the service team for the strongest current recommendation.
Brunch and Breakfast
Brunch was one of the most enjoyable experiences at MARGARETE. The selection was broad, and the small table étagère was a nice touch. Waffles, quark, bread, cheese, cold cuts, salads, eggs, and warm items created a generous meal. The waffles and quark were not overly sweet, which made the brunch easier to enjoy over a longer time. For a slow weekend meal, I recommend the brunch.
Desserts and Cake
Desserts varied by item. The chocolate tart was rich and worked well with coffee. A lemon and meringue dessert had a good balance of sweetness and acidity. Some more unusual dessert combinations sounded more exciting than they tasted. For a safer choice, I recommend a classic chocolate or citrus-based dessert.
Drinks, Wine, and Coffee
The wine selection was good and matched the restaurant’s upscale character. On strong visits, the wine advice was accurate and helpful. Cocktails such as the WildBerry Negroni were distinctive and enjoyable. Drink prices were high, so the total bill can rise quickly with wine or cocktails. Coffee was generally good, and when one espresso was not right, it was replaced immediately and kindly. That response was professional and left a positive impression.
Service and Staff Friendliness
Friendly and Professional Service
Service was often one of the best parts of the visit. Staff members were friendly, professional, and usually attentive without being intrusive. Wine recommendations, menu explanations, and special-occasion service were handled well on many visits. Families with children were also treated comfortably, which made the restaurant feel more welcoming.
Weaker Moments During Busy Hours
Service was not perfect every time. During busy periods, drinks sometimes arrived late, ordering took longer, and empty plates remained on the table longer than expected. Some staff members were excellent, while others felt less confident. At this price level, these details matter. For an important dinner, I recommend booking a quieter time or a less crowded weekday.
Parking and Restrooms
Parking
Parking near MARGARETE is difficult because the restaurant is in the center of Frankfurt. It is not realistic to rely on finding a space directly in front of the restaurant. Paid parking garages and paid street parking nearby are the better options. Arriving by public transport is much easier, especially because the Römer, Paulskirche, New Old Town, and cathedral area are all within walking distance.
Restrooms
The restrooms were available and kept in good condition. The presence of an accessible restroom was also a positive point. For longer dinners, family meals, brunch, or group events, this makes the restaurant more comfortable.
Pros and Cons
Pros
The biggest strengths are the central location, the modern atmosphere, the versatile menu, and the generally friendly service. MARGARETE works for many situations: dinner for two, business meals, brunch, family events, group meals, and a stylish break after sightseeing. When the kitchen and service are both working well, the visit feels very satisfying.
Cons
The main weaknesses are the high price level and occasional inconsistency. Some portions felt smaller than expected, some dishes needed stronger seasoning, and service could slow down during busy hours. Guests who expect perfection in every detail should choose their dishes carefully and reserve a good seating area.
Satisfaction and Revisit Intention
Overall Impression
Overall, MARGARETE was a good to very good restaurant with some variation between visits. The best meals were excellent: good food, matching wine, a beautiful atmosphere, and warm service. The weaker moments came from waiting times, small kitchen misses, or dishes that did not fully match the price. Even with those points, the overall impression remained positive.
My Recommendation
I would return, but I would order selectively. For a first visit, I recommend a dish with Frankfurter green sauce, a strong meat dish such as Entrecôte, the brunch, or a tasting menu. A glass of wine or a distinctive cocktail pairs well with the experience. For a calmer meal, ask for an indoor table away from the busiest areas or a courtyard seat. For a special meal in Frankfurt Innenstadt, MARGARETE remains a good recommendation.
How to Get to MARGARETE
From the Römer and Paulskirche
From the Römer and Paulskirche area, walk toward Hühnermarkt and the New Old Town. The restaurant is located among the small streets, restored façades, and central squares of the old city area. If you are already visiting Römerberg, Paulskirche, or the New Old Town, MARGARETE is only a short walk away.
From the Cathedral and Domplatz
From Kaiserdom St. Bartholomäus and Domplatz, walk west toward the New Old Town. The route passes small squares, cafés, and restaurants, making it easy to find your way. MARGARETE is especially convenient as a lunch or dinner stop between the cathedral, the Römer, and the Main river area.
