Overall Review After Several Visits to African Queen Restaurant
Eritrean and East African Food in a Warm Setting
African Queen Restaurant in Frankfurt-Bockenheim was a satisfying place for Eritrean and East African food over several visits. The strongest points were generous portions, deep spices, friendly service, and a warm dining atmosphere. Even on an early visit, the staff explained the menu and the traditional way of eating, so the experience felt comfortable rather than difficult. Current on-site conditions may differ from the time of my visits.
Best Enjoyed as a Shared Meal
This restaurant works especially well when several people share a large platter. Meat dishes, lentils, potatoes, spinach, chickpea dishes, and spicy sauces are served over injera, so each meal offers a wide variety of flavors. For a first visit, I recommend ordering the African Queen Plate or a mixed platter.
Waiting Time Price Payment
Waiting Time and Reservation
At lunchtime, getting a table was relatively easy. On some early evening visits, there was little to no wait. During busy dinner hours and weekends, however, I had to wait about 10 to 30 minutes, even with a reservation. On very busy nights, the food also took longer to arrive. It is better to reserve ahead and visit with enough time.
Price Range
The usual price range was around €20 to €30 per person. With drinks, dessert, or a larger platter, the total can move closer to €30 to €40. The portions were generous, and the shared platters made the price feel reasonable. For the amount and variety, the value was good.
Payment Method
Both cash and card payment were available. Payment was straightforward, though it could take a little longer when the restaurant was full. If you have plans after dinner, it is better to ask for the bill early.
Parking and Access
Parking
Parking around the restaurant is not easy. There are some free and paid street parking options nearby, but finding an open spot can take time. In the evening, it is better to allow extra time for parking.
Public Transport
Public transport is the more convenient option. Frankfurt (Main) Adalbert-/Schloßstraße station is nearby, and the restaurant is easy to reach on foot within Bockenheim. Considering the traffic and parking situation, I recommend using public transport.
Detailed Food Review
African Queen Plate
The African Queen Plate is the best choice for a first visit. It comes with different meat dishes, vegetables, legumes, and injera, allowing you to taste several parts of the menu at once. The meat was deeply seasoned, the lentils were soft and flavorful, and the potato and spinach dishes gave the platter balance. This is the dish I would recommend most confidently.
Mixed Platter
The mixed platter is especially good for groups. It includes both meat and vegetarian options, so it suits different tastes at the same table. The portion size was generous, and eating from one large platter made the meal more social. You can eat traditionally with injera, but cutlery is also available.
Injera
Injera is central to the meal. It has a slightly sour flavor and a soft, thin texture that works well with rich sauces and spicy dishes. It may feel unfamiliar at first, but it becomes more enjoyable when paired with lentils, meat, and vegetables. Extra bread can be requested if needed.
Sambusa
Sambusa is a good starter. The pastry was crisp, and the filling worked well with the dip. Both vegetable and meat versions were enjoyable. I recommend ordering Sambusa before a large platter.
Vegan and Vegetarian Platters
The vegan and vegetarian options are one of the restaurant’s biggest strengths. Lentils, chickpeas, spinach, and potatoes each had a distinct flavor, and the meal still felt filling without meat. For vegetarians and vegans, I recommend a mixed vegan or vegetarian platter.
Meat Dishes
The meat dishes were strongly seasoned and worked best as part of a shared platter. Beef, lamb, and chicken each had a different taste. Some dishes were clearly spicy, so anyone sensitive to heat should ask before ordering. If you enjoy spicy food, I recommend trying the extra chili or spice options.
Lentils and Chickpeas
The lentil dishes were soft, warm, and satisfying. They paired especially well with injera and made the platter feel complete. The chickpea dish was thicker and more comforting. On the vegetarian platter, these dishes were essential.
Drinks and Beer
The African beers with mango, banana, or coconut were a memorable part of the meal. The mango beer was especially interesting because it paired well with the spicy dishes. It was not just a standard beer; it matched the restaurant’s character.
Dessert
After a spicy meal, mango ice cream or a sweet dessert worked well. A coffee at the end also made a nice finish. After a large platter, a small sweet ending felt just right.
Service and Atmosphere
Friendly Guidance
The service was warm and helpful. During multiple visits, the staff explained the dishes clearly and gave useful recommendations. This matters a lot for guests who are new to Eritrean and East African cuisine. The restaurant felt welcoming.
Interior
The interior was cozy, warm, and full of character. The background music matched the food and atmosphere well. On busy evenings, the restaurant became more lively, but it still felt friendly.
Outdoor Seating
The outdoor seating is pleasant in warm weather. Because the restaurant is close to the street, it is not completely quiet outside, but the terrace is still a good option for a relaxed summer meal.
Restroom and Seating
Restroom
A restroom was available inside the restaurant. It was usable during my visits, though it did not feel modern. Since the food and service are strong, a fresher restroom area would make the overall experience even better.
Seating and Groups
The restaurant works well for couples, families, and groups. The large platters are especially suitable for social dining. It is also a good option for special occasions if you want something different from a standard dinner.
Pros Cons Satisfaction
Pros
The main pros are the generous platters, warm service, and strong vegetarian and vegan selection. The food is flavorful, the portions are large, and the atmosphere feels personal. The staff’s explanations make the restaurant easy to enjoy even for first-time visitors.
Cons
The main cons are waiting time and parking. During popular hours, waiting is possible even with a reservation, and parking nearby is not simple. Some dishes are quite spicy, so it is better to ask before ordering.
Satisfaction
My overall satisfaction was high. The restaurant has a clear identity, and the combination of food, service, and atmosphere works very well. It is a strong choice for anyone in Frankfurt looking for something different from pizza, burgers, or classic German food.
Revisit Intention
I would visit again. It is especially good with friends or family because the shared platters make the meal more enjoyable. For a first visit, I recommend the African Queen Plate, Sambusa, and mango beer.
