Overall Review Summary

A strong choice for traditional German food

Frankfurter Wirtshaus was a good place to enjoy traditional German and Frankfurt-style food in the old town area. Its location near Eiserner Steg, the Main riverbank, and Römer square made it especially convenient before or after sightseeing. After several visits, I tried schnitzel, pork knuckle, bratwurst, goulash soup, beef roulade, Käsespätzle, Flammkuchen, chicken salad, beer, Apfelwein, and apple strudel. The portions were generous, the flavors were hearty, and the atmosphere had the lively character of a German pub restaurant.

What to know before visiting

With a reservation, I usually had little to no waiting time. Without a reservation, the experience depended heavily on the time of day. Weekend evenings and peak dinner hours were much busier. The usual cost was around €20–30 per person, and it could rise above that with pork knuckle, beer, and dessert. Card payment was available. Parking nearby was not easy, so walking or public transport is the better choice. Current on-site conditions may differ from the time of my visits.

Atmosphere and Seating

Lively German pub atmosphere

The restaurant had a lively German Wirtshaus atmosphere. The interior combined rustic wooden details with a modern pub look. It was not a silent fine-dining space. It was louder, busier, and more energetic, which matched the style of the restaurant.

Indoor and outdoor seating

The indoor area was spacious, but it became crowded during peak hours. Some tables were close together, especially when large groups were dining. The outdoor seating was very pleasant in good weather. Sitting near the Main with a beer made the meal feel more relaxed.

Waiting Time and Reservation

With reservation

When I visited with a reservation, seating was quick and smooth. I recommend booking ahead for dinner, weekends, and groups. The restaurant is close to major sightseeing spots, so it fills up quickly.

Without reservation

Without a reservation, I was sometimes seated right away, especially outside peak hours. During busy periods, I had to wait longer for ordering or payment. The food often arrived quickly, but service speed changed depending on how full the restaurant was.

Cost and Payment

Price range

Most meals were around €20–30 per person. Schnitzel, sausage dishes, and salads usually fit within that range. Pork knuckle, drinks, and dessert pushed the total higher. Considering the central location near the river and old town, the prices were understandable, though not cheap.

Payment method

Card payment was possible. At payment, it was worth checking the final bill carefully, especially when tip options or service-related amounts appeared. For group meals, I recommend checking the bill before paying.

Parking

Limited parking convenience

Parking was one of the weaker points. The area is excellent for walking but not ideal for drivers. Finding a convenient parking spot right nearby was difficult.

Best way to arrive

I recommend arriving on foot, by public transport, or by using a nearby paid parking garage. If you are already visiting Römer square, the Main riverbank, or Eiserner Steg, walking to the restaurant is the easiest option.

Detailed Food Review

Schnitzel

The schnitzel was one of the safest choices on the menu. The breading was crisp, the meat was tender, and the portion was filling. The Frankfurt-style version with green sauce was especially enjoyable because the herb sauce balanced the richness of the fried meat. For a first visit, I recommend schnitzel with green sauce.

Pork knuckle

The pork knuckle was large, rich, and very satisfying. The outside had a crisp texture, while the inside was tender and flavorful. The seasoning was strong, so beer and sauerkraut worked well with it. I recommend pork knuckle to anyone who wants a classic German meat dish.

Bratwurst with sides

The bratwurst was hearty and went well with beer. It had a salty, grilled flavor that suited the pub setting. With potato salad or sauerkraut, it became a simple but satisfying German meal. It was also a good dish to share with other mains.

Goulash soup

The goulash soup was warm, rich, and comforting. It worked well as a starter before a heavier main dish. On colder days, I would order it again.

Beef roulade

The beef roulade was a heavier, more traditional dish. The meat was soft, the filling was savory, and the sauce tied everything together. I recommend it to anyone who wants a slow-cooked dish instead of fried schnitzel.

Käsespätzle

The Käsespätzle was creamy, cheesy, and filling. It worked well as a vegetarian option or as a shared side dish. As a main dish, it was quite heavy, but the flavor was satisfying.

Flammkuchen

The Flammkuchen was lighter than the meat dishes. Its thin base and savory topping made it a good option with beer. I recommend it when you want something less heavy than pork knuckle or schnitzel.

Chicken salad

The chicken salad added freshness to the meal. It was a good option when I wanted something lighter. It also worked well alongside heavier dishes on the table.

Apple strudel

The apple strudel was a pleasant dessert after a heavy meal. It had warm sweetness and a soft texture. If you are already full, I recommend sharing one.

Beer and Apfelwein

The beer paired well with the food. Light beer or wheat beer worked especially well with schnitzel, pork knuckle, and sausage. Apfelwein was also a good choice in Frankfurt and matched the traditional dishes nicely.

Staff Friendliness and Service

Friendly service

The service was mostly friendly during my visits. Several staff members explained the menu, helped with drink choices, and served the food efficiently. Even when the restaurant was busy, the staff often worked quickly.

Slower moments

Service became less consistent during peak hours. Sometimes ordering or paying took longer. The food itself often came quickly, but I recommend allowing extra time when the restaurant is full.

Restroom Availability

Restrooms inside

Restrooms were available inside the restaurant. They were easy to access and generally clean. Because the restaurant is in a busy tourist area, the restroom area had visible usage control or guidance, which stood out at first.

Convenience

As a dining guest, using the restroom was simple. For a large and busy restaurant, the restroom access was convenient enough.

Pros

Excellent location

The location was the strongest advantage. The restaurant is close to the Main river, Eiserner Steg, and Römer square. It is easy to combine a meal here with sightseeing.

Generous portions

The portions were usually large. Pork knuckle, schnitzel, and Käsespätzle were especially filling. This is a good restaurant for hungry diners.

Many traditional dishes

The menu offered many classic German and Frankfurt-style dishes. It was a convenient place to try several traditional options in one visit.

Cons

Can be loud

During busy hours, the restaurant became loud. This fits the Wirtshaus atmosphere, but it is not ideal for a quiet meal. For a calmer visit, I recommend going earlier.

Parking is difficult

Driving there is not the most convenient choice. Nearby paid parking or public transport is better.

Not a low-cost restaurant

The prices were reasonable for the location, but not cheap. Drinks and dessert can raise the final bill quickly.

Satisfaction and Revisit Intention

Overall satisfaction

My overall satisfaction was high. The combination of central location, generous portions, classic German dishes, and lively atmosphere made the restaurant a strong choice near Frankfurt’s old town.

Would I return?

I would return, preferably with a reservation and outside the busiest dinner hours. For a first visit, I recommend schnitzel with green sauce. For a heavier traditional meal, I recommend pork knuckle with beer.

Location Description

From Eiserner Steg

From the northern end of Eiserner Steg, the restaurant is only a short walk away. After crossing the bridge toward the old town, stay near the Main riverbank and walk through the area with restaurants and cafés.

From Römer Square

From Römer square, walk toward the Main river. After a few minutes, you reach the riverside area where the restaurant is located. The location is very convenient after exploring Frankfurt Old Town.
