Before Visiting
Reservation and ID
Käfer was not a normal walk-in restaurant visit. Since the restaurant is located on top of the Reichstag building, the experience started with a reservation, name check, and security screening. I had a confirmed reservation and needed to bring identification. Without a reservation, visiting this restaurant is not realistic. Once the reservation and security process were completed, the restaurant visit itself was smooth.
Current Visit Notice
This review is based on my visit. Menu prices, entry procedures, reservation rules, seating, opening hours, and security requirements may have changed. Because the restaurant is inside the Reichstag building, it is worth checking the reservation confirmation, required ID, security arrival time, and menu conditions before going.
Waiting Time and Entry
Security Screening
The main waiting time was not at the restaurant table but at the building entrance. I arrived earlier than my reservation time, passed the security check, and was then directed upstairs. Inside the restaurant, I was welcomed quickly and seated without a long wait. After sitting down, the service started promptly.
Time Before the Meal
This is not a place I would visit in a rush. The rooftop location, the view over Berlin, and the proximity to the Reichstag dome are all part of the visit. Arriving early made the experience much better. I would plan extra time again, especially for a first visit.
Cost and Payment
Price Range
Käfer is clearly a high-priced restaurant. For a proper lunch or dinner menu, I would expect around 70 to over 100 euros per person, depending on the number of courses and drinks. A simple coffee or aperitif can cost less, but a full meal here is not cheap. Considering the location, service, and view, the price made sense, but it was still a special-occasion price.
Card Payment and Reservation Hold
Card payment was convenient. Depending on the reservation, card details or a reservation guarantee may be required, so it is important to check the confirmation carefully. My payment at the restaurant was simple, but this is the kind of place where reservation details matter more than usual.
Parking and Transportation
Parking by Car
Parking was not convenient. The area around the Reichstag, government buildings, and major tourist sites is not easy for casual parking. Paid parking garages and paid street parking may be available, but finding a spot can take time. For this restaurant, public transportation is the better option.
Public Transportation
The restaurant is easy to reach by public transportation and on foot. From Bundestag station or the Brandenburg Gate area, the walk is straightforward. The Reichstag is easy to recognize, but the key is to find the correct entrance for registered restaurant guests rather than looking for a typical street-level restaurant door.
Food Review by Item
Bread and Opening Bite
The meal started well. The bread was lightly crisp on the outside and soft inside. The accompanying spread was smooth and not too heavy. It was a polished beginning and matched the atmosphere of the restaurant.
Salad and Vegetarian Choices
The salad dishes tasted fresh and well balanced. The dressing had enough acidity without overpowering the vegetables. The vegetarian choices were also a clear advantage. They did not feel like an afterthought, which made the restaurant more comfortable for vegetarian guests.
Wiener Schnitzel
The Wiener schnitzel was a safe and satisfying choice. The coating was thin, crisp, and not oily. The meat was tender enough, and the flavor was classic rather than experimental. It was not the most surprising dish, but it was a well-executed version of a familiar favorite.
Duck
The duck had a rich flavor and worked well with the sauce. The dish had more depth when eaten with the accompaniments. For my taste, the duck could have been cooked a little more, but the flavor was still clear and enjoyable.
Fish and Seasonal Dishes
The fish dishes were lighter and more restrained. Instead of heavy seasoning, the kitchen focused on the ingredients. Seasonal items such as asparagus, beetroot, or root vegetables fit the modern German style well. The portions were not huge, so I would choose more than two courses if arriving hungry.
Dessert and Coffee
Dessert was one of the stronger parts of the meal. Pistachio and chocolate-based desserts were balanced, with sweetness kept under control. Coffee worked well at the end of the meal. As a full-course finish, dessert and coffee felt more satisfying than ordering coffee alone.
Aperitif and Small Plates
The aperitif option is good for guests who want the view and atmosphere without committing to a full menu. Small savory bites, sweet pieces, and a glass of prosecco made it feel like a special afternoon break. It is not a full meal for everyone, but it works well as a lighter visit.
Breakfast
Breakfast was generous and attractively presented. Bread, croissants, cheese, cold cuts, salmon, fruit, yogurt, and egg dishes created a full table. The price was high, especially when drinks were added separately. Still, for a memorable morning in Berlin, it was a strong option.
Staff Friendliness and Service
Welcome and Guidance
The welcome was friendly and professional. I was guided calmly, and the staff explained what was needed without making the process feel stiff. English service was also comfortable, which makes the restaurant easy for international visitors.
Service During the Meal
During the meal, the staff were attentive without being intrusive. Courses arrived at a good pace. On busier days, the pace can feel slightly fast, so for a special occasion I would mention that I wanted to enjoy the meal slowly.
Restroom and Cleanliness
Restroom Use
The restroom was very clean. The sink area, mirrors, and stalls were well maintained, and I had no unpleasant impression. For a restaurant in this price range, that matters, and Käfer met that expectation during my visit.
Dining Room Cleanliness
The dining room was also well kept. Tables, glasses, and plates were neatly prepared. The food presentation was clean and attractive. Some details, such as paper napkins, may feel less premium at this price point, but the overall cleanliness was strong.
Pros and Cons
Pros
The biggest advantage is the location. Eating on top of the Reichstag while looking out over Berlin is a rare experience. The service was professional, the food was generally good, and the restaurant reservation can be combined with a visit to the dome area. For visitors who want a memorable Berlin experience, Käfer is a strong choice.
Cons
The biggest drawback is the price. Not every dish alone justifies the cost; a large part of the value comes from the location, access, and view. The security process also makes the visit more complicated than a normal restaurant meal. This is not the best choice for a spontaneous, simple lunch.
Satisfaction and Revisit Intention
Overall Satisfaction
My overall satisfaction was high. Käfer is not a restaurant I would judge only by the food. The location, view, service, and special entry process all shape the visit. The food was not perfect in every detail, but the entire experience was memorable and worth doing at least once.
Would I Return?
I would return. For an ordinary dinner, it is too expensive, but for visiting guests, a birthday, an anniversary, or a special Berlin day, it fits very well. Next time, I would arrive early again and leave enough time before and after the meal.
Location Description
Around the Reichstag
Käfer is located on top of the Reichstag building, not along a normal street of restaurants. From Brandenburg Gate, walk toward the Reichstag and Platz der Republik. Paul-Löbe-Haus, the Spree area, and Tiergarten are also nearby. The area is open, spacious, and busy with visitors.
How to Get There
From Brandenburg Gate, head toward the Reichstag and look for the registered visitor entrance. From Bundestag station, walk toward Platz der Republik, where the building is immediately visible. The most important part is finding the correct entrance and security checkpoint for your reservation. Arriving 30 to 60 minutes early makes the visit much easier.
