Visit Basis
Impression After Several Visits
Kamps Bäckerei mit Backstube was a practical bakery in central Berlin-Mitte for a quick breakfast, coffee, or takeaway pastry. After visiting more than once, I saw it as a functional city bakery rather than a slow café for a long stay. It worked best when I wanted to choose bread, a sandwich, sweet pastry, or coffee quickly and then either sit for a short break or take everything to go. Current conditions, prices, menu availability, and service may now be different.
Bakery Atmosphere
The bakery had indoor seating, and the window seats were pleasant for a short pause. It was not a quiet café environment, but it suited a quick city stop. In the morning and around lunchtime, the place stayed busy with workers, tourists, and people passing through Berlin-Mitte. When the bakery was crowded, table cleaning was not always immediate. During quieter times, sitting inside felt much more comfortable.
Waiting Time and Use
Morning Waiting Time
Early in the morning, ordering was usually quick. For a coffee and a simple roll, I did not have to wait long. When the counter was not crowded, the order and payment were done within a few minutes. During busier periods, especially when several people ordered sandwiches, pastries, and hot drinks, the wait was closer to five to ten minutes.
Lunchtime Waiting Time
Around lunchtime, the bakery became noticeably busier. Ready-made rolls and pastries were the fastest options. Orders that needed warming or special packing took a little longer. It was still suitable for a quick bite, but it was better not to expect a slow café-style meal.
Dine-In and Takeaway
I used the bakery both for takeaway and dine-in. Takeaway was the most convenient option. Eating inside also worked well when seats were available. Since seating can fill quickly, it was better to check for a table before ordering if I wanted to eat there.
Cost and Payment
Price Level
The prices were not especially cheap, but they were understandable for central Berlin-Mitte. A simple coffee with a small pastry or roll stayed in a reasonable range. With sandwiches, larger drinks, or several sweet items, the total increased quickly. For a small breakfast, the price felt acceptable. For a filling meal, it was necessary to choose carefully.
Value for Money
Value depended heavily on the item. Sweet pastries such as the Berliner, chocolate croissant, and vanilla pudding pretzel were more satisfying than some of the filled rolls. A few sandwiches had less filling than expected, so they felt more like light snacks than complete meals. For quick food on the move, they worked well.
Payment Method
I paid by both card and cash. Card payment was convenient, especially while moving around the city without much cash. During busy times, it helped to mention the preferred payment method clearly. Because the counter moved quickly, I checked the amount before leaving.
Food and Drink Review
Rolls and Sandwiches
The rolls were among the easiest choices. They were light, soft, and suitable for a quick breakfast. The cheese roll had a mild flavor, with cheese, remoulade, and a little vegetable filling carrying the taste. The filling was not especially generous, so anyone expecting a rich handmade sandwich may be disappointed. As a quick snack, it was fine.
Tomato Mozzarella Toast
The tomato mozzarella toast worked well as a light breakfast option. When served warm, the bread, cheese, and tomato made a simple but pleasant combination. It was not a special dish, but it was easy to enjoy with coffee.
Chocolate Croissant
The chocolate croissant was one of the better sweet items. The sweetness paired well with cappuccino or black coffee. It was best when eaten earlier in the day, when the texture was fresher. As a small breakfast or afternoon snack, it was a satisfying choice.
Berliner
The Berliner was a fitting pastry to eat while in Berlin. It was soft, sweet, and matched coffee well. It was better as a dessert or afternoon snack than as a full breakfast. For people who enjoy sweet pastries, it was a safe choice.
Vanilla Pudding Pretzel
The vanilla pudding pretzel was one of the strongest items I tried. The soft, slightly chewy dough and creamy vanilla filling worked well together. It was sweet without feeling too heavy. With coffee, it was one of the pastries I would choose again.
Streusel Cake and Streusel Pastry
The streusel items were quite sweet and crumbly. They worked better with a hot drink than on their own, because the texture could feel a little dry depending on the time of day. Anyone who likes classic German streusel pastries may enjoy them, but coffee is almost necessary with them.
Apple Pastries and Apple Cake
The apple pastries and apple cake were enjoyable because the fruit added a light tanginess. That made the sweetness feel less flat. Apple pastry worked in the morning, while apple cake felt better as an afternoon item. These were good choices when I wanted something sweet but not too heavy.
Cherry Pie and Cakes
The cherry pie had a clear fruity sweetness and paired nicely with coffee. The cake selection was better earlier in the day. Later on, the choices could be more limited. For a wider sweet selection, visiting before late afternoon was the better option.
Vegan Pretzel and Basic Baked Goods
The vegan pretzel was soft, simple, and easy to eat. It was not strongly flavored, but it worked well as a light snack. The basic baked goods were more practical than creative. That was also the main purpose of this branch: quick bakery food in a central location.
Coffee and Drinks
The cappuccino worked well with sweet pastries. A large coffee was generous, and black coffee paired better with savory rolls. The oat cappuccino also matched the chocolate croissant and Berliner nicely. Coffee was not the main reason to visit, but it did its job as a bakery drink.
Staff Friendliness and Restroom
Staff Friendliness
The service was not the same on every visit. On some mornings, I was greeted warmly and served quickly. On other visits, especially when the bakery was crowded, the service felt short and less friendly. For a fast central bakery, it was still usable, but the service level was not always consistent.
Ordering Tips
Ordering worked best when I clearly said what I wanted and whether it was for takeaway or dine-in. During busy periods, a direct order helped. Basic German phrases made the process faster, but simple English orders were also possible.
Restroom Availability
A restroom was available. During my visit, it was usable and generally acceptable. For a bakery in a central city area, this was a useful advantage. Cleanliness can vary by time of day and crowd level, so the current condition should be checked during the visit.
Parking and Access
Parking Situation
Parking was not convenient. The bakery is in a busy part of Berlin-Mitte, so finding an easy nearby parking space was not realistic. For a quick bakery visit, arriving by car was not worth the effort. Public transportation or walking was the better choice.
Public Transportation
Stadtmitte station was the easiest reference point. From there, the bakery was only a short walk away. It also worked well as a stop during a walk around Brandenburg Gate, Unter den Linden, Konzerthaus Berlin, and St. Hedwig’s Cathedral.
Pros and Cons
Pros
The biggest advantages were the central location, quick ordering, and practical selection. It was possible to get coffee, rolls, sandwiches, and sweet pastries in one place. The vanilla pudding pretzel, chocolate croissant, Berliner, and apple pastries were good options. The seating also made it useful for a short pause.
Cons
The main drawbacks were inconsistent service, a smaller selection later in the day, and some filled rolls with less filling than expected. During busy periods, the bakery felt rushed. It was not the best choice for someone looking for a quiet artisan bakery experience.
Satisfaction and Revisit Intention
Overall Satisfaction
Overall satisfaction was solid. Kamps Bäckerei mit Backstube was not an exceptional destination bakery, but it was useful for coffee, rolls, and sweet pastries in Berlin-Mitte. Some items were much better than others. For a quick city break, the bakery served its purpose well.
Would I Visit Again
I would visit again if I needed coffee and a pastry near Stadtmitte. For a long breakfast or a special bakery experience, I would choose somewhere else. For a quick snack while walking through central Berlin, this branch remained a practical option.
Location Explanation
From Brandenburg Gate
From Brandenburg Gate, walk toward Unter den Linden and continue into the central Berlin-Mitte area. The bakery is easy to reach near Stadtmitte. St. Hedwig’s Cathedral, Konzerthaus Berlin, and Hausvogteiplatz are also nearby, so it fits well into a city walk.
From Stadtmitte Station
The easiest way is from Stadtmitte station. After leaving the station, it only takes a short walk to reach Kamps Bäckerei mit Backstube. Because it sits near major central streets and well-known landmarks, it is easy to find even on a first visit.
