Before Visiting coast by east Hamburg
Current On-Site Notice
coast by east Hamburg was an upscale Asian cuisine restaurant in Hamburg HafenCity with a strong mix of food, service, and waterfront atmosphere. After several visits, the most memorable parts were the sushi, the Elbe-side setting, and the polished dining mood. Reservation conditions, waiting time, seating, menu items, and prices may change depending on the date of visit, so the current on-site situation may differ.
Reservation and Waiting Time
Reservation
I recommend making a reservation before visiting coast by east Hamburg. The restaurant works well for date nights, business dinners, birthdays, and special meals with guests. During my visits, having a reservation made the evening much smoother. Window seats and terrace seats are especially desirable, so booking ahead is the better choice.
Waiting Time
The waiting time varied by visit. During quieter hours, I was seated almost immediately. During busy dinner hours, I sometimes waited briefly even with a reservation, usually around ten minutes or less. On some visits, the table was not fully ready at arrival. Since the restaurant may operate with fixed dining time slots, I recommend arriving on time.
Cost and Payment Method
Price Level
The price level was high. A lighter meal can still cost around 50 euros per person, and a full dinner with sushi, sashimi, starters, cocktails, wine, and dessert can easily reach 70 to over 100 euros per person. Sushi platters, sashimi, duck dishes, cocktails, and wine increase the bill quickly. The portions were not especially large, but the quality, plating, service, and waterfront setting made the price reasonable for a special occasion.
Payment
Card payment was convenient. Common credit cards were accepted, and paying at the table was easy. For groups, I recommend keeping the budget in mind before ordering multiple starters, sushi platters, and drinks.
Parking and Access
Parking
Parking was not the easiest part of the visit. HafenCity does not always offer simple street parking, so nearby paid parking garages are the more realistic option. If you arrive by car, it is better to allow extra time.
Public Transport
Public transport was more convenient. From Überseequartier station, the restaurant is easy to reach on foot. Westfield Hamburg-Überseequartier, Strandkai, and the Elbe waterfront are useful nearby reference points.
Food Review
Sushi and Sashimi
Sushi and sashimi were the highlights. The fish tasted fresh, the texture was clean, and the presentation was refined. Tuna dishes were especially tender and flavorful. For a first visit, I recommend ordering a sushi platter because it gives a good look at the kitchen’s style.
Sushi à la Chef
The Sushi à la Chef platter was a strong choice across multiple visits. The selection was varied, visually polished, and balanced in flavor. The portion was not huge, so I recommend combining it with starters or another dish if you want a more filling meal.
Sashimi
The sashimi showed the ingredient quality very clearly. Freshness and clean cutting mattered more than heavy seasoning. It paired well with wine or a light cocktail. If you enjoy fish in a purer form, I recommend ordering sashimi.
Tempura and Fried Dishes
The fried dishes varied by item. Crispy seafood and prawn dishes worked well, especially with drinks. Vegetable fried items were pleasant but not the strongest part of the meal. Anyone expecting very light, traditional tempura should ask the staff before ordering.
Duck
The duck was more dependent on the visit. On a good day, it had rich flavor and a good sauce pairing, but it did not feel as consistently strong as the sushi and sashimi. For a first visit, I recommend focusing on fish and sushi because that is where the restaurant performs best.
Edamame and Starters
Edamame was a good way to start the meal. It was easy to share, nicely seasoned, and useful while waiting for the main dishes. The starters were neatly presented and worked well for groups. I recommend pairing them with a cocktail or a glass of wine.
Cocktails and Wine
The cocktails were well made but expensive. Non-alcoholic cocktails were also a good option. The wine list was solid and matched the Asian-inspired menu well. However, ordering several drinks can raise the final bill quickly.
Dessert
Dessert satisfaction depended on the item. Crème brûlée was a reliable ending to the meal. Matcha tiramisu was more specific in taste. If you enjoy matcha, it is worth trying; if you prefer a safer classic finish, I recommend choosing a more familiar dessert.
Staff Friendliness and Service
Table Service
Table service was usually friendly, attentive, and professional. Staff explained dishes clearly, gave useful recommendations, and did not feel intrusive. Empty glasses and finished plates were noticed quickly, and the pacing at the table was comfortable.
Reception and Timing
The reception was not always as strong as the table service. On some visits, the greeting felt a little cool, and the dining time limit could have been explained more warmly. Once seated, however, the service was much better.
Restroom and Interior Atmosphere
Restroom
Restrooms were available and clean. They matched the modern style of the restaurant and were convenient to use during the meal.
Interior
The interior was stylish, modern, and spacious. Large windows, high ceilings, and the water view made the dining experience feel special. On quieter evenings, it was easy to talk. With larger groups, the room became livelier. For dates and special dinners, the atmosphere worked very well.
Pros
View and Atmosphere
The biggest advantage was the location. The view of the water, HafenCity, and the area near Elbphilharmonie made the meal memorable. In good weather, the terrace was a major plus.
Sushi Quality
Sushi and sashimi were the strongest parts of the menu. Fresh ingredients, refined presentation, and balanced combinations made them easy to recommend.
Good for Special Occasions
coast by east Hamburg is well suited for birthdays, business dinners, dates, and meals with guests. If you want an upscale restaurant with a view, this is a strong option.
Cons
High Prices
The main downside was the price. Food and drinks were clearly in the higher range. If you want large portions at moderate prices, this is not the best fit.
Parking
Parking was not ideal. Paid parking nearby is usually more practical than looking for a spontaneous street parking spot.
Time Slot
The fixed dining time slot can make the evening feel a little rushed. If you want a very slow dinner, I recommend choosing the reservation time carefully.
Satisfaction and Revisit Intention
Overall Satisfaction
Overall satisfaction was high. coast by east Hamburg was not perfect in every detail, but the sushi, sashimi, service, and view made the visit worthwhile. The restaurant worked best when ordering its strongest items: fish, sushi, starters, and carefully chosen drinks.
Revisit Intention
I would visit again. It is not the right place for a cheap casual dinner, but it is a good choice for special occasions, guests, business dinners, or a polished meal in HafenCity. For a first visit, I recommend the sushi platter, sashimi, edamame, and one selected drink.

From Elbphilharmonie, walk toward Speicherstadt and Strandkai, then continue into the southern part of HafenCity near the water. The walk is pleasant along the waterfront, and in the evening the area works especially well for dinner followed by a short stroll.
